Chapter 47: Threads of Fire
Chapter 47: Threads of Fire
Alyra couldn’t sleep.
The castle was quiet, the kind of hush that felt unnatural—too calm, like the world was holding its breath. Kaelan lay beside her, warm and steady, his breath a slow rhythm that should’ve soothed her. But her mind refused rest.
She slipped from their bed, wrapping a robe around her shoulders as she padded to the balcony. Cool wind kissed her skin as she leaned against the railing, the moon high and sharp above the horizon.
She could feel it.
Power.
Not just her own—but something moving, weaving through the world like a current just out of sight.
Footsteps sounded behind her. She didn’t turn.
“You always know when I’m coming,” Kaelan murmured.
“I always feel you,” she said softly.
He wrapped his arms around her from behind, pulling her into the heat of his body. “You should be resting.”
“So should you.”
They stood in silence for a moment, gazing out at the moonlit trees swaying like whispers.
“I had a vision,” Alyra finally said.
Kaelan tensed behind her.
She turned to face him. “I saw flames. Not real fire—but golden threads. Twisting through the forest, through people. Tangled around me.”
He brushed a thumb along her cheek. “Your magic’s waking more each day.”
“It didn’t feel like just mine,” she whispered. “It felt... older. Like it came from somewhere else. From something else.”
Kaelan’s brows drew together. “Could it be the source Sarya mentioned? The root of the Silver Wolf line?”
“I don’t know,” Alyra admitted. “But it’s growing stronger.”
Kaelan leaned down and kissed her gently. “Then we face it together.”
Her lips curled into a faint smile. “We always do.”
They were about to return inside when a soft knock sounded at the chamber door.
Kaelan's body shifted, suddenly alert.
A guard stood outside when he opened the door. “Forgive the hour, my King. There’s movement on the western border. Not an attack, but... strange activity. Something magical.”
Alyra stepped forward. “I’ll come too.”
Kaelan hesitated for a breath, then nodded. “Get Sarya.”
The edge of the western border shimmered under the moonlight. Wards flickered faintly, their glow disturbed. The wind howled through the trees, but Alyra could feel something beneath it—like a vibration on the edge of hearing.
Sarya arrived minutes later, her silver braid gleaming like steel. “It’s a projection,” she said after a moment, kneeling and brushing her fingers across the ground. “Illusion magic. Meant to test our defenses.”
“Jessica again?” Kaelan asked.
Sarya shook her head. “No. This isn’t dark magic. It’s wild. Untamed. Elemental.”
Alyra’s chest tightened. “Then who—?”
Before the words left her mouth, the air sparked.
Golden light flared in the forest. A tree caught fire—not with flames, but with glowing runes that pulsed like a heartbeat. Alyra stepped closer, drawn toward it. The markings shimmered in the same shape she’d seen in her vision.
“The threads,” she whispered. “That’s what I saw.”
Sarya’s expression darkened. “This is a call.”
Kaelan moved protectively closer. “A call for what?”
Sarya looked at Alyra. “For her.”
They sealed the perimeter and returned to the castle, the tension wrapping tighter around them like a second skin.
Kaelan hadn’t let go of Alyra’s hand the entire way back. Now, in the quiet of their room again, he finally turned to her fully.
“I don’t like this,” he said. “These visions. Threads. Projections.”
“Neither do I,” she admitted.
But as he stepped forward to embrace her, his expression softened. “But I trust you.”
She looked up at him, searching his face, memorizing the lines of love and battle, of loyalty and fear. Her fingers curled around his shirt. “You always see me, even when I can’t.”
He tilted her chin up, brushing his lips against hers. “That’s what mates do.”
The kiss deepened. Her robe slipped from her shoulders. His hands were careful but hungry, as if he needed to ground himself in her.
She felt his heartbeat thundering against her skin, felt the fire between them flicker and flare—not just passion, but magic. Pure and electric.
The threads she’d seen in her vision—she could feel them now, coiling through the air around them, glowing brighter where their bodies touched.
Kaelan pulled back slightly, panting. “Your magic... it’s responding to us.”
Alyra nodded, her breath catching. “It’s always been there. But this... it feels like it’s syncing with you.”
“Then let it,” he whispered.
She arched into him as the threads flared gold, wrapping around their joined bodies like a shield. Whatever power had been calling her—she was answering it, not with fear, but with fire.
And Kaelan was her anchor.
Their bond burned brighter than any danger outside.
But far beyond the walls of the castle, Jessica stood beneath a starless sky.
Her sorcerer knelt in the center of a runic circle, his hands dripping with blood as the chant rose in the air.
“She’s changing,” Jessica muttered. “The Silver Wolf grows bolder.”
The sorcerer didn’t look up. “Let her. The higher she climbs, the harder she’ll fall.”
Jessica’s smile twisted. “Then it’s time to burn the ladder.”
The air trembled as the blood-soaked runes burst into flame.
