Chapter 50 Unshakable Bonds
Alyssa's POV
I looked at Zayne's sleeping figure before leaving the room, closing the door softly to avoid waking him up and knowing him, it was even a miracle he didn't wake up when I left his arms.
Just as I turned to leave, I came face to face with Xavier, who raised his eyebrows while watching me, his arms crossed in front of me.
“What are you doing?" He asked, his voice clearly amused. “You know he's going to come find you the moment he wakes up, right?
"That's why you're going to be here when he wakes up,” I replied. "You'll keep him here until I say so. He needs to rest and you're going d to make sure he does that.”
"But…" he started to argue but I stopped him.
“It's not a suggestion, Xavier," I told him, and he looked taken aback by the lack of warmth in my voice…even I was surprised, but now wasn't the best time to think about why my voice came out that way. “So make sure he stays indoors."
He nodded, "Yes Luna.”
He remained in front of the door, while I marched to the childcare…maybe seeing the kids would get my mind to stop overworking with all the thoughts I had no control over.
Mel was probably in the childcare too, because Xavier had ordered her and Lori to leave when Zayne was brought in , so they had no idea what actually happened, which was going to remain that way and it wasn't because we didn't trust them…well, not completely but because we were still trying to figure out what was going on as well.
I was right, the girls stood up to meet me the moment they saw me, wrapping their arms around me. Aileen murmured a series of thank you for saving her brother, so that only me could hear.
“Tristan said he woke up." Aileen said.
I nodded, “he did, but he's sleeping now."
“You should be resting, you’ve barely slept as well.”
My eyes felt heavy, but the moment I closed my eyes, images of Zayne covered in his blood kept appearing making it unable to sleep properly.
"I'm okay." But they didn't buy it.
I took a deep breath, “I'm going to take a walk…clear my head.” I told them, knowing that they were going to keep fussing over me until I lost my mind.
Mel immediately stood up but I shook my head, "I want to be alone.” She wanted to argue but something in my voice warned her against it.
I left the childcare but I could still feel their eyes on me. I thought about where to go, knowing my mate, he wouldn't listen to any instructions to stay put and just like Xavier said, he was going to come looking for me. I thought about the one place where he wouldn't check…the library. I'd never been there but after the tour by the girls, I knew exactly where it was.
Once I got there, I made myself comfortable on the couch, my eyes looking at my hand.
“Nira,” I called, but just like other times, there was no response.
Her voice had been so weak after we somehow managed to heal Zayne. "Nira?”
Still nothing.
Before I could continue calling her, knowing she wouldn't respond, Lori came towards me. "I swear, I was already here…I'm not stalking you."
For some reason, this made me smile. “Good thing you're aware," I told her, “I was beginning to think you have a thing for me."
She made herself comfortable beside me, “and let Alpha Zayne have my head? No thank you."
We sat in silence for a few minutes before she spoke up again. “Are you okay?" She asked, “after yesterday's…incident, you look like you need someone to talk to."
I snorted, “you?"
“I've been told I'm a good listener…you should give it a trial.” She replied, grinning. "Either that or you listen to me talk about all of the weird dates I've been on now that I haven't found my mate.”
I thought about it, and I was curious but a greater part of me wanted to get off the heaviness in my chest.
"I can't get the image of Zayne covered in his blood…I was so close to losing him.” I told her because I could stop myself. "But he's an Alpha, I can't stop him from carrying out his responsibility but I want to…is that selfish?”
She thought about it for less than a second, "it's not," she said. “You're scared and it's normal…but you have to understand that it's what he was born to do, so asking him to choose is not something you want to do.”
I wasn't sure how long we spoke for, but I was feeling better, the heaviness in my chest had disappeared and I soon found myself drifting off to sleep. Lori assured me that it was okay, that she was going to wait until I woke up.
By the time I woke up, Lori was nowhere to be found but her space had been taken over by the same person Xavier was supposed to be watching.
“What are you doing here?"
He ignored my question, pulling me in for a hug, one that was very much needed. “Why did you leave? I missed you when I woke up."
“I needed to think," I replied truthfully.
Zayne frowned, putting a space between us so he could look at my face. "What's going on?" He asked, “Xavier told me what happened…it's a lot, but we'll figure it out together.”
“It's not that,” I admitted, "you threw yourself in front of him…I know you were protecting him, but I can't help my thoughts."
“You were bleeding Zayne," I said and he frowned at the use of his name but didn't say anything, his hand caressing mine. “I thought I was going to lose you…I can't lose you, baby.”
I didn't realise I was crying until he wiped my tears with his thumb. "You saved, Red. I'm here because of you.” He said, "you're not going to lose me…I still haven't taken you on that date."
I can't believe he had it in him to make a joke right now, but again, it was Zayne we were talking about.
"What did you say to the boys?” He asked, "I swear they preferred going against me than disobeying your order.”
I shrugged, “because they agree with me that you needed to rest. And seeing how you're here…what did you do?”
He grinned widely, "I'll probably need to apologize to Xavier.” He replied, pulling me closer to himself, his scent filling my nostrils and calming me. "Not even death can keep me away from you, Red.”
I hissed, hitting his arms lightly, “don't joke with something like that,"
"Sorry,” he murmured. “Fuck! I missed you so much." He placed a kiss on my head, holding me like I was going to disappear if he let go.
"Now, do you want to tell me about your new found relationship with Lori?” He asked, and I froze.
