Chapter 157 Calm After The Storm

Chapter 157 Calm After The Storm

Alyssa's POV

The look on Zayne's face when I told him the news was funny and if I wasn't so fucking exhausted and my body wasn't acting like it belonged to someone else, I would be laughing.

"Red, what are you talking about?" He asked again.

I took a deep breath as I thought about what actually happened. At first, taking care of the witch wasn't a big deal but after making sure that I took care of the rogues and that the shield combined with Nyra's powers was standing strong, I felt a bit tired and my wolf reminded me that I needed to be careful because of our pup.

So for a moment, when she started chanting her spells, I could feel the effect even though it wasn't that bad. But at the same time, I felt a tiny movement within me.

“Wait…” Zayne interrupted me, "our pup moved?”

A small smile appeared on my face, not in the bit surprised that our pup moving when he wasn't there was his first concern. "Just briefly,” I told him. "I'm sure it's going to happen again."

“But this was the first time." He pouted, gently caressing my hand with his thumb. "Our pup waited until I wasn't there."

I laughed softly. "You're jealous of an unborn pup?"

"A little." He shrugged without the slightest bit of shame. "I wanted to be there for every first." He said, as I intertwined my fingers with his.

"There'll be plenty more firsts."

His expression softened as he lifted my hand and pressed a kiss against my knuckles. "I know," he murmured. "I just don't want to miss any of them.”
"Then better get ready to be attached to me every minute of the day.” I joked but the look on his face became serious.

"Can we start from now?” He asked, causing me to laugh.

After a brief silence, he continued. “So what did you mean when you spoke about unlocking its ability?” He asked again. "Are you sure it's not you discovering that you could do something new?”

I shook my head, "I don't think so.” I replied, “I was able to control that witch without touching her and it didn't feel like something I was doing."

His brows furrowed, it was the same way I felt when I was doing it. I remembered talking to the child in my womb. A lot of things were going on and a part of me was scared that even if the spell had no effect on me, it could affect the child.

"I can't remember what I said or did not say,” I explained, "all I knew was that she was in the air and holding her neck."

"Well shit!” He murmured, "sometimes, I really don't know what to expect. It feels like if I blink too long, I'm going to miss a lot of things."

I chuckled, “this isn't on me."

He didn't say anything as he pulled me into his arms, and his scent filled my nostrils. I closed my eyes, letting myself relax for the first time since everything happened.

"I was so scared.” He whispered, “I really can't live without you.”

I smiled against his chest, "You wouldn't have to…at least not anytime soon." I told him, but without adding the latter part.

"I'm just glad this is finally over, Viktor and his family is finally a closed chapter." I continued.

"Yea.” He murmured, his arms tightening around me.

"Have you decided what to do with them?”

He shook his head, "that can wait till later.” He said, "I want you to just focus on regaining your strength."

I nodded as I placed my head on his chest, listening to the steady rising and falling of his chest.

We remained like that until the doctor came back to check on the IV bag that had long finished. He said it was okay to go back to the Pack house but I still needed to rest.

Zayne carried me in his arms, and my arms immediately wrapped around his neck. He didn't stop until we got to the room and he placed me carefully on the bed as he sat beside me.

"You must be hungry, I'll have the Omegas bring something for you and then you can shower.”

I nodded. A shower sounded perfect. Even though most of the blood had been cleaned off me while I was unconscious and my clothes had also been changed, I still felt like I could smell it on my skin.

The food arrived a few minutes later, but I barely had an appetite. After a few spoonfuls, I pushed the plate away.

Zayne frowned as if he wanted to complain about how I needed to eat, but after looking at my face, he sighed and let it go.

"Come on," he said softly, standing. "Let's get you cleaned up.”

He prepared a bath for me and apart from being in his arms, it was the next best thing. I leaned back against the tub and closed my eyes, letting the warm water soothe my aching muscles.

"Feeling better?" Zayne asked quietly.

I hummed in response. "A little."

He knelt beside the tub and reached for the washcloth. Before I could stop him…not that I wanted to, he dipped it into the water and gently started washing my body.

"I can do that.” I told him.

"Of course you, but I want to.” He replied, "how else am I supposed to remain attached to you?”

My grin widened, "right! Why don't you get into the water too?” I said and he just chuckled and continued washing me.

“As tempting as that sounds, the pack doctor did say you need to rest."

“He doesn't know what he's talking about." I argued but not without pushing it as I stared at him, wondering who I must've saved in my past life to get someone like him to be my mate.

For the first time since the Viktor and Dylan issue started, I slept without thinking about what the next step of action would be.

When I opened my eyes the following morning, Zayne was already awake, quietly watching me with a smile that made my heart skip a beat, "good morning.”

"Good morning,” I said, “did you sleep at all last night?"

He nodded, “the best, I slept better than I have in the past two days.”

My smile widened, "let's never sleep apart again." I told him and he nodded, kissing my lips softly and murmuring a silent I love you.

Breakfast went on like it used to, the only person who wasn't at the table was Jace and he probably had a good reason.

“Good reason my foot," my wolf, who had been quiet since the fight with Lisa, said, “he's definitely avoiding our mate."

“I think Zayne is already used to the fact that nothing could keep me in one place…especially not when our family was in danger."

I was snapped out of my thoughts when Zayne filled my plate with more food.

"Zayne baby," I sighed, looking down at the mountain of food. "I'm not feeding an entire Pack."

"You're eating for two now." He reminded me.

I rolled my eyes, "I know I'm eating for two, and definitely not twenty…because that's exactly the number of people this food is going to feed.” I told him but he just shrugged and went back to eating.

"Is everyone okay?” I asked after a while, "I must've surprised you yesterday…sorry about that.” I apologized. I mean, even I surprised myself with how everything turned out but it felt like I wasn't in control of my body. And seeing Tristan in a bad shape didn't help matters.

Lori was the first to speak up, "are you kidding? We should be asking how you're feeling.”

Aria nodded, "Are you sure you're okay to be out of bed already?”

I groaned, “not you too!" I started, looking at Zayne who was pushing another plate towards me. "I'm fine and I'm glad you're all okay.”

"We're fine…thanks to you." Aileen said, then she turned to face Zayne. "You missed a lot, she looked so hot while putting Lisa in her place. You would've fallen in love with her all over again."

Zayne shrugged, his eyes meeting mine. “That already happens every time I see her." He said smoothly, and I felt my face heat up. “And I'm certain I'd have a heart attack watching her.” He added, causing them to laugh.

And for the first time in what felt like forever, the pack felt like home again.
