Chapter 262: Lyra's Awakening

Chapter 262: Lyra's Awakening

The house felt different now. Quieter.

Like the violent energy that had been crackling through the air for days had finally dissipated, leaving behind this strange, almost peaceful silence.

Ethan had disappeared to deal with Orion's body, and Avery and Dominic had headed upstairs to rest. It was nearly midnight, after all.

Damian's hand traced lazy circles along my exhausted shoulders as we stood in the hallway. The warmth of his touch was grounding after everything we'd just witnessed.

"You okay?" I asked, studying his face in the dim light.

He shrugged, that typical Damian response.

"Yeah. I thought I'd be more... I don't know. Messed up about watching him die. But honestly?" He paused, his dark eyes meeting mine. "I felt nothing. Not even when I watched the life drain out of him."

Is that good or bad? I wondered, but I didn't voice the question. Sometimes healing meant feeling nothing at all.

"Want to head home?" Damian asked, his voice soft.

I considered it for a moment, then shook my head.

"I want to check on Lyra first. You know, as a doctor." The explanation felt necessary, even though Damian never questioned my medical instincts.

"Ethan said he'd come watch her after dealing with the body, but I feel like shit asking him to do that. The guy has two daughters who need him."

Ethan, you there? I reached out through the mind link as we walked toward the makeshift recovery room.

When you're done with... cleanup, you can head home to the girls. I'll stay with Lyra tonight.

You sure? His mental voice carried that familiar note of concern.

Positive. Orion's dead. The biggest threat to the Tempest Howlers Pack is gone. I paused at the door to the small room. I have a feeling this might be the last dangerous thing we have to deal with for a while. We're about to have some peace, finally.

Alright. Mind link me if anything changes.

Will do.

The room had been one of the servants' quarters back when the Alpha House had actual staff. Now it served as storage for random household items, but we'd managed to clear enough space for a simple bed.

Lyra lay on the thin mattress, a blanket pulled up to her chin.

She looked peaceful. That was the first thing I noticed. Her golden hair, still matted with dried blood, fanned across the pillow.

The cuts and bruises on her exposed skin had mostly healed, leaving only faint pink lines. I could see the steady rise and fall of her chest. Her breathing wasn't weak anymore. She was definitely recovering.

I moved closer to check her vitals while Damian stood behind me, his presence solid and reassuring.

"She's doing really well," I said, both to him and through the mind link to Ethan. Recovery is on track. No complications.

Good to hear, came Ethan's response. Get some rest.

When I turned back to Damian, I caught him letting out a breath he'd been holding. I found myself staring at him. The way his black hair caught the light from the hallway. The sharp line of his jaw. The way his casual clothes stretched across his broad chest. Even exhausted, he was stupidly attractive.

He looked up and caught me staring. His eyes went wide with something like panic.

"Don't get the wrong idea," he said quickly, his voice tight with sudden tension. "I only think of Lyra as a sister. That's it."

I couldn't help it. I burst out laughing. "Jesus, Damian. You don't need to be so jumpy. I'm not some psycho girlfriend who's gonna lose her shit every time you look at another woman."

The tension in his shoulders relaxed, and his furrowed brow smoothed out.

We stood there for a moment, just looking at each other. That familiar pull between us, the one that made everything else fade into the background.

I was standing with my back to Lyra's bed, and Damian was right in front of me, close enough that I could smell his smell mixed with the faint scent of adrenaline from earlier.

Then I heard it. A soft cough behind me.

I spun around so fast I nearly lost my balance. Lyra's eyes were open, but they looked distant, unfocused. Like she wasn't quite all the way back yet. Her pale lips were moving, forming words I couldn't hear.

I leaned down, pressing my ear close to her mouth.

"Light..." she whispered, the word barely audible.

"Light?" I straightened up, looking at Damian with confusion. "What light?"

"Maybe the overhead is too bright?" he suggested. "Hurting her eyes?"

I looked at Lyra, who gave the slightest nod.

I switched off the harsh overhead bulb, leaving us with just the soft glow filtering in from the hallway. Much gentler. It wasn't shining directly on her face anymore.
