Chapter 14: Selene's Gambit

Chapter 14: Selene's Gambit

Selene’s POV

The cell reeked of wet stone and my own stale breath, cold biting into my skin, bruises pulsing where Lucien had grabbed me, shoved me, left me to rot. No food, no water, no light—just his growl ringing in my ears, his ice-blue eyes searing, his hands rough, promising worse if I pushed him again. I slumped against the wall, knees drawn up, wrists aching, green eyes glinting in the gloom, tracing the steel bolts on the door, my breath the only sound, shallow, steady, alive. He’d stormed out, bolted me in, his fury a wildfire I’d fed, his pack a pile of bones I hadn’t buried. My lips quirked, bitter, sharp, picturing his fists, his snarl, his blame—weak, tossing Dax’s trap on me like I’d handed him the map.

I rose, slow, quiet, bare feet hushed on the stone, jeans stiff with his dried blood, sweater ripped at the shoulder from his grip. My fingers stretched, nails blunt but restless, green eyes narrowing, scanning the dark, the cracks, the stillness. He’d locked me here to crumble, to starve, to carry his loss, but I wasn’t his to break. I paced, three steps, pivot, three back, mind spinning, cold, quick, alive. The den was silent, eerily so—no snarls, no boots, just the faint drip of water somewhere far, the whisper of wind through stone. His pack was shattered, Vira and Ragnar all he had left, and they’d be nursing wounds, not watching me, not now, not near. My chest tightened, pulse quickening, green eyes flashing, opportunity slipping in, small, real, mine.

The door stood heavy, wood scarred, steel firm, but the latch had rattled when he’d slammed it, loose, careless, his rage blinding him. I knelt, fingers brushing the frame, chill stinging my skin, green eyes tracing the bolts, the gap, the wear. My nail wedged in, pried, metal creaking, soft, faint, my breath held, ears pricked, no steps, no growls, just quiet, thick, heavy. I worked it, patient, firm, sweat beading, wrists throbbing, green eyes fixed on the latch, urging it, forcing it, cursing him under my breath, his cage, his wrath. It shifted, barely, steel groaning, wood sighing, my pulse hammering, fast, sharp, freedom teasing, close, alive.

I stopped, green eyes darting up, ears catching a shuffle, faint, soft, boots scuffing stone, not his, lighter, slower. My breath hitched, chest tight, fingers pausing, green eyes narrowing, waiting, poised, ready. The door edged open, torchlight spilling in, orange, wavering, Vira’s shadow stretching long, mossy scent hitting me, her fur matted, blood crusted on her arm. She halted, brown eyes glinting, weary, guarded, holding a crust of bread, a tin cup, water sloshing, simple, real. “Eat,” she said, voice gruff, low, stepping in, boots scraping, setting it down, near, too near.

I stayed still, green eyes locked on her, mind racing, cold, quick, plotting. “He said no food,” I said, voice even, slicing, testing her, prodding her, green eyes sharp, alive. She straightened, fur bristling, brown eyes flicking to the door, then back, jaw clenching, scars tightening across her cheek. “He’s out cold,” she muttered, voice rough, stepping back, boots slow, heavy. “You’re useless dead.” My lips curled, slight, bitter, green eyes tracking her, her limp, her weight on one leg, her guard low, soft-hearted fool, too soft for this.

I sprang, swift, silent, bare feet striking stone, hands seizing her arm, twisting, hard, fast, her growl tearing out, loud, raw. She swung, fist clipping my jaw, pain sparking, green eyes flaring, teeth bared, fighting back, fierce, wild. I dodged, shoved, hooked her bad leg, tripping her, stone cracking against her shoulder, her snarl choking, tin cup tipping, water spilling, dark, wet. My hands clamped her throat, pinning, not choking, green eyes drilling into brown, chest heaving, pulse pounding, chance surging, tight, hot, alive. “Keys,” I hissed, voice low, venomous, fingers pressing, nails digging, blunt but firm.

She bucked, claws slashing, snagging my sweater, ripping, green eyes narrowing, holding her, fierce, unyielding. “No keys,” she rasped, voice hoarse, brown eyes blazing, wild, fierce, thrashing beneath me, stone grazing her back. “Just bread, you snake—let go.” I pressed harder, knee on her chest, green eyes cutting deep, searching, doubting, cursing her, her empty pockets, her truth. No jingle, no weight, just her, mossy stench thick, blood and sweat sharp, her breath ragged, real. My growl rumbled, low, frustrated, green eyes flicking to the door, the latch, the gap, chance fading, slipping, lost.

I released her, quick, rising, bare feet silent, green eyes blazing, Vira rolling, coughing, brown eyes glaring, fury thick, heavy. “You’re finished,” she wheezed, voice rough, clawing up, boots sliding, water soaking her fur, dark, slick. I smirked, faint, sharp, green eyes glinting, stepping back, hands ready, alive. “Not today,” I said, voice low, firm, spinning, lunging for the door, fingers prying, latch groaning, steel giving, my pulse racing, fast, sharp, freedom close, so close, his cage cracking.

The latch popped, loud, clear, door swinging, torchlight flooding, orange, warm, my breath catching, green eyes wide, alive. I slipped out, bare feet hitting stone, cold stinging my soles, den sprawling, dark, still, shadows stretching, long, deep. My chest heaved, green eyes sweeping, ears straining, no growls, no boots, just silence, thick, heavy, mine. I moved, fast, quiet, jeans brushing stone, sweater flapping, torn, green eyes darting, left, right, stairs rising, freedom near, nearer, real. My pulse thundered, hard, fast, chance coiling, tight, hot, his wrath behind me, his den slipping away.

I reached the stairs, bare feet slapping, stone rough, cold, green eyes glinting, climbing, climbing, shadows shifting, den breathing, alive, quiet, too quiet. My lungs burned, chest tight, wrists aching, green eyes tracing the dark, the turns, the cracks, freedom close, so close, his grip fading. I hit the top, stone icy, den sprawling below, torchlight dim, flickering, my pulse hammering, hard, fast, green eyes narrowing, scanning, waiting, alive. The air thickened, faint, musk, leather, boots scuffing, soft, near, too near.

My growl caught, low, rough, green eyes flicking, shadow looming, tall, broad, ice-blue flashing, Lucien, awake, here, his scent hitting me, sweat, blood, wild, raw. He stepped out, shirt gaping, scars flexing, blood crusted on his arm, ice-blue locking on me, fierce, molten, heat rolling off him, thick, heavy, alive. “Going somewhere?” he growled, voice gravel, boots thudding, closing in, chest rising slow, fury simmering, steamy, electric. My pulse spiked, green eyes blazing, bare feet shifting, caught, trapped, his presence a wall, close, too close, his breath brushing my skin, hot, ragged, stirring me, damn it, stirring me.

He stopped, inches away, ice-blue piercing, scars glinting in the torchlight, chest bare under his open shirt, muscle taut, blood-streaked, his heat crashing into me, wild, feral, pulling me, pushing me. My lips parted, breath short, green eyes locked on his, defiant, burning, alive, his hand twitching, scars flexing, hovering near my arm, not touching, not yet, the air crackling, thick, steamy, charged. “Thought you’d run,” he rasped, voice low, rough, ice-blue glinting, closer, his scent drowning me, musk, leather, blood, his chest brushing mine, faint, electric, my skin prickling, heat coil
ing, low, sharp, alive.
