Chapter 64 My Border
Chapter 64 My Border
{Warren POV}
Aiden clicked his tongue as he walked closer to where I was standing. "I wouldn't call it your border, if I were you."
I scoffed, looking around at the thick trees before looking back at him. "I'm not in the mood to do this with you right now. And what's with setting all these traps?" I gestured to the trap with fresh blood on it right in front of my boots.
"They are there for a reason, Alpha Warren," he said, looking at me closely. It felt like he was trying to pull something out of me just by staring into my eyes. "What brings you to my border, Alpha?"
I intended to correct him on the border ownership, but then I realized that it wouldn't be a good time to do that, especially when the last time we talked about it ended up chaotic.
"I'm looking for a pregnant shewolf," I said, looking around the ground, hoping I would see something that might point me to her. "She has been missing for days now."
"Quite a shewolf," he muttered, walking over to the other side of the path. "She's not here, and I would suggest you go back."
"Have you seen her?" I asked, without looking away from him.
He turned to look at me briefly. "I haven't. But if I were you, I would focus on the enemy in my pack before looking around for what is not missing."
A deep frown knotted my brows. "What do you mean by that?"
He shrugged his shoulders, leaning his back against a wide tree trunk. "Just saying. It's all over you, that dark aura. For an Alpha that you are, I wouldn't call you weak, because I expect you should be stronger."
"You've started with this petty talk again," I said, shaking my head in frustration. "Why am I even talking to you?"
I walked over to the other side of the clearing, keeping my eyes on the ground while Aiden stayed leaning against the tree, watching my every move.
"She isn't here, and I would suggest you go back to your pack," he said calmly, his voice flat. "If you fall into a trap, I won't pull you out or help. I would enjoy seeing you bleed, because I warned you right from the start."
I stared at him for a long while, thinking about what to do, because I knew better than to listen to his words completely. "If you see her, don't hesitate to send a message."
"And what would I have in return for that?" he asked, his voice growing more serious now as his cold eyes locked onto mine.
"I said I'm not doing this with you," I snapped, turning around as I started walking away toward the exit of the woods. "And this is my border not yours."
"Fine! If I see her," he shouted after me, his sharp voice carrying through the quiet trees, "I'll send a message."
"Thank you!" I shouted back, spreading my arms high in a quick gesture without turning around.
I finally left the woods and reached the path where my car was parked. I opened the driver's door, but before getting inside, my gaze drifted back toward the trees once more.
I knew I couldn't trust Aiden, but my mind kept drifting to the fact that he had mentioned an enemy was inside my pack. I had always known him as someone who acted like he could read thoughts and see hidden things. The fact that he had mentioned something so similar to what my mother had said earlier made me realize that maybe I hadn't been attentive enough to my own surroundings.
I got into the car, closed the door, and started the engine.
I thought about what Aiden had said all through the ride back home. The dark aura, the spell my mother felt, and Diana's sudden disappearance were all twisting together in my mind, making my head ache.
When I finally returned to the pack house, I parked the car in the driveway and walked up the front steps. I decided it was time to go up to Layla's room to talk to her about what had happened the previous day.
Standing right opposite her bedroom door, I felt deeply reluctant to knock. A part of me just wanted to turn around and keep searching for Diana. But then I thought of the fact that Layla was my mate anyway, and I decided I had to do this to keep the peace.
I knocked on the door gently and waited for a while.
"Come in," Layla's muffled voice called out from inside.
I opened the door slowly and walked into the room. Layla was lying on the bed, reading a book. When she looked up and saw me standing in the doorway, she shifted back a little on the mattress, a flicker of real fear passing over her face.
Seeing her pull away like that made me pause. I wondered why she was so afraid of me, but then I realized it was very likely because of how my wolf had lost control and scratched her arm the previous night.
"Layla," I said softly, stepping closer to the bed. "I am sorry about yesterday. I just lost control over my wolf, and it wasn't right."
Layla set her book down on the small table beside the bed, looking up at me with hurt. "It seems like you care about Diana more than me, Alpha. You raged at your own Luna over some girl."
"That's not the case," I told her, shaking my head as I stood by the side of the bed. "I just felt bad for everything that had happened to her. The fact that she is pregnant and out there somewhere in the woods alone isn't a good thing. Anyone would be worried."
Layla scowled, pulling her blanket up a little. "Stop worrying about another person's mate and focus on your actual mate, which is me."
I let out a low breath, feeling a strange tightness in my throat. "Okay," I said reluctantly, not wanting to start another argument. "I should let you rest."
I turned around to leave the room, but before I could take two steps toward the door, Layla stood up from the bed. She moved quickly, her bare feet soft against the floor, and stepped right in front of me to block my way.
"I want to have you, Alpha," she whispered, her eyes softening as she looked up at my face.
She leaned close, wrapping her arms around my neck, and pressed her lips against mine.
At first, I stayed stiff, but as she kept kissing me, I got lost in the heat of the moment and started kissing her back. I pulled her body closer to mine, but deep down inside my chest, my wolf let out a bitter, uncomfortable growl, completely displeased with what I was doing.
