Chapter 59 Twin Pups
Chapter 59 Twin Pups
I turned over on the bed, resting my head against the pillow. As I breathed in the fresh air coming from the small open window, my body still ached, but it was nothing compared to the awful, crushing pain I had felt before I went to sleep.
My eyes snapped open as the realization hit me all at once. I sat up quickly on the bed, pressing both of my hands firmly against my lower stomach. My wolf growled softly within me. She was still weak and tired, but I was grateful for the fact that she had managed to heal my body overnight.
"That means I can see my pups now," I mumbled softly to myself in the quiet room.
I swung my legs over the side of the bed and placed my bare feet directly onto the floor. A wave of coldness ran straight up my spine, making me wince and pull back for a second. I looked around the room to check for shoes or anything to wear on my feet, but there were no shoes in sight. Shivering, I decided to endure the chill and slowly stood up from the bed.
A sharp pain shot through my lower back, reminding me that I hadn't fully recovered yet, but I ignored the ache. As long as I could walk on my own two legs, I was going to find my pups and hold their tiny hands.
I grabbed the door handle and pushed it open, stepping out into the quiet, dim hallway. The building had only a few rooms, and the air smelled strongly of medicine and sharp cleaning alcohol. I covered my nose and mouth with my hand as I walked down the hall, holding back a gag because I had hated those medical smells ever since I was a little girl.
It was the exact same smell I had breathed in on the day my mother died in our old pack hospital.
I kept walking slowly along the wall, looking at every door I passed to see if there was any sign, tag, or note that showed where newborn babies were kept. The floor felt rough and cold against my bare feet, sending tiny shivers up my legs with every step I took. After walking for a short while, my knees began to feel tired and shaky because I had no idea which room my babies were placed in.
I decided to ask someone for help before my body gave out on me. A nurse walked down the hall toward me, holding a black clipboard, and I hurried up to meet her.
"Please, can you help me?" I asked, my voice trembling with urgency. "I need to see my pups."
She stopped in her tracks and looked at me with a bright smile. "Are they newborns?"
I nodded my head quickly, my heart thumping hard against my ribs. "Yes. Twins."
"Okay, just take this main hallway all the way down," she said, pointing a finger ahead toward the end of the building. "You will see a front desk. Give the nurse sitting there the number of your room, and she will take you inside."
"Thank you," I whispered. She turned to walk away, but I quickly reached out to stop her arm. "Please, where is the exact room? I don't have a ward number."
The nurse looked at me with a little suspicion in her eyes before she spoke again. "The newborns are kept all the way at the end of the hall."
She opened her mouth to say something else, but another nurse called out her name from down the corridor. She turned quickly and hurried away to meet the person, leaving me standing alone in the quiet path.
I turned back and started walking fast in the direction she had pointed out. My breath came in short, uneven gasps, and my hands brushed against the cool wall to keep my balance as I pushed forward. I was just about to reach the end of the long hallway when a familiar voice called out from right behind me.
"Diana?" I stopped and turned around to see Gina standing there with her mouth open. Her jaw dropped in total shock when she saw me standing upright on my own without any help. She rushed up to meet me, her eyes sweeping over my body from head to toe.
"What are you doing out of bed?" Gina asked, reaching out to hold my arm to steady me. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm fine," I said, pulling my arm back gently. "I need to see my pups right now. Please, show me where they are."
Gina looked around the empty hallway before leaning in close to whisper. "Your pups were put in a private room at the back because of their condition. The doctor needs to watch them closely."
"Please take me there," I begged, my eyes burning with hot tears that threatened to spill over. "I just want to see them."
Gina hesitated for a second, looking over her shoulder to make sure no other nurses were watching us down the hall. "Okay, follow me."
She turned and led me down a side path. We walked past several closed doors until we reached the very back of the building. Gina stopped in front of a door, turned the handle, and pushed it open slowly.
My breath caught in my throat, and hot tears filled my eyes as I stepped inside the room.
There, sitting side by side in two clear cribs, were my newborn pups. They were tiny, wrapped in soft white blankets, and sleeping peacefully. I rushed over to the side of the room, staring down at them through the clear glass view of their beds. My heart hammered wildly against my ribs, overflowing with pure, deep love.
"Can I touch them?" I asked, looking at Gina with tears spilling down my pale cheeks.
"The nurses said no one is allowed to open the cribs because they are still under care," Gina whispered. Then she smirked a little and shrugged her shoulders. "But I don't really believe in following rules when breaking them feels better."
She stepped over and unlatched the top cover of the first crib.
My wolf let out a warm, happy growl deep inside my chest as I reached my trembling hand into the small bed. I gently brushed my fingers against my baby boy's warm cheek. He stirred softly in his sleep, opening his tiny fingers and wrapping his whole hand tightly around my index finger.
I let out a shaky sob, turning my head to look at the second crib where my baby girl lay sleeping quietly. Her tiny face was so peaceful, her little chest rising and falling with every small breath she took. Looking at my two precious pups, the heavy weight and pain in my heart completely melted away, replaced by pure, overwhelming joy.
I pressed my forehead against the warm glass of the crib, letting my tears drip onto the smooth frame. For the first time in a very long time, as I felt my son's tiny grip tighten around my finger and watched my daughter breathe softly beside him, I felt a deep spark of hope rise within my chest.
No matter what Layla had planned, and no matter how lost Warren was in his dark fog, I knew in my heart that I would do whatever it took to keep these two precious lives safe from harm.
