Chapter 58 She Can't Be Missing
Chapter 58 She Can't Be Missing
{Warren POV}
The sound of footsteps pulled me out of the moment, and my gaze drifted to the door. My mother walked into the study holding a small tray, which I assumed contained something she had prepared for me to drink. Her eyes widened in complete shock when she saw the state Layla and I were in, and she quickly turned her back to us.
"Why would you be intimate with your Luna in your study, Warren?" my mother asked, her voice tight and strict as she stood there near the entrance without turning to look at me.
"Oh, mother," Layla said as she stood up from my lap, pulling down her sheer gown before she smoothed her hair and walked up to my mother. "You don't have to sound this way. Alpha Warren just needed to cool himself off after all the heavy stress of the day."
I gulped down the bile rising up my throat, a deep sense of unease creeping under my skin. My wolf growled softly within me, whimpering in pain as if he had been deeply wounded by what had just happened. I had never felt him react this way before, turning away from me in the dark.
The study suddenly felt far too hot, and my body craved something cool, or maybe just the overwhelming, burning desire to see Diana. I stood up quickly from my chair, zipping up my pants and grabbing my car keys from the table.
"I'm going out, mother," I said, interrupting her conversation with Layla before it could go any further.
My mother turned to look at me, her gaze drifting down to the cup and the warm bowl of soup sitting on her tray. "At least have this before you go out," she said softly, holding out the tray toward me.
Layla nodded in agreement, biting her lower lip as she stared at me hungrily, as if she still wanted more of what we had just done against the desk.
The sight made me feel dirty and disgusted with myself, and I quickly looked away toward my mother. "Mother, I need some fresh air right now. You can bring it back to me when I come back from a stroll."
"Can I come along with you, Alpha?" Layla cooed, stepping closer to me and reaching out her hand as if she wanted to link her arm with mine. "I could also maybe let my wolf stretch her legs out in the woods too."
I shifted my body away from her touch, not wanting her skin against mine for another second. "No, Layla. You've had a long day. I think you should rest here or maybe spend some time talking with my mother."
I didn't wait for her to say anything else to persuade me. I walked right past her and headed straight out of the study. I walked fast down the hallway until I was completely out of the pack building. The cool evening air brushed against my face, making my wolf feel much more relieved, like he had been trapped inside a dark cage and desperately needed a moment like this to breathe.
I walked over to my car and got inside, turning the key and pulling out of the mansion driveway toward the main gate. The gate slid open, and I drove out at high speed down the quiet road. Whenever I thought of Diana, the heavy guilt of everything clawed at my heart. I wondered how she was surviving on her own after quitting her job, especially without any money coming in.
If only she would just let me help her out. I shoved my hand through my hair at the thought of her face. I had to look for a way to help her out financially, even if I had to find someone not related to me to pass the money to her. Maybe that way she would accept the help, not knowing it was coming from me.
I was still lost in these thoughts as I drove down the road, until I finally pulled up in front of Cora's house.
I stayed sitting in the car for a few moments, leaning my head back against the seat to calm my racing heart and hope that Cora was home. After a while, I got out of the car, walked over to the front door, and knocked hard on it.
At first, there was silence inside the house. Then, I heard quick footsteps, and Cora opened the door in haste, Diana's name almost slipping off her lips as she pulled it open.
When she saw that it was me standing on her porch instead, she paused, letting out a long sigh. But I could tell right away from the look on her face that she was deeply worried about something.
"What happened?" I asked, looking at her closely. "Where is Diana?"
Cora gripped the edge of the door tightly, her eyes wide with clear fear. "Her phone line has not been going through all day, Alpha Warren. She wasn't home when I got back, and I've been calling her number over and over, but it just goes straight to voicemail."
Panicking slightly, I stepped closer to the doorway. "Did something happen to her? Where could she be?"
"It's not like her to not be home by now," Cora said, her voice trembling as she looked out into the dark yard. "She always comes back early, especially in her condition. She shouldn't be out this late alone in the cold!"
Hearing that made pure terror spike in my chest. My wolf growled softly, thrashing around inside my mind as panic completely took over me. Diana was pregnant and if she was missing in the middle of the night, anything could have happened to her out there in the dark woods.
"I'm going to call the wolf warriors from my pack right now," I said, my voice rising as I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone. "I'll have them set up a search party and look everywhere for her."
"Please Alpha, help me find her," Cora whispered, tears welling up in her eyes as she looked at me.
"I will search around the area myself," I told her, trying to keep my voice steady despite the fear clutching my throat. "Stay home in case she comes back while I'm gone, so you can call me right away to let me know."
"Okay," Cora said, nodding her head quickly. "Please be careful."
I didn't waste another second standing there. I turned around, hurried back to my car, and got inside. I started the engine and drove off in haste, my eyes scanning every dark corner, street, and forest path along the road.
As I drove faster through the night, the terror in my chest grew stronger and stronger. My mind raced with terrible thoughts of what might have happened to her, and my wolf howled in deep pain at the thought of losing her. I held tightly onto the steering wheel, hoping with everything left in me that wherever Diana was, she was safe and unharmed.
