Chapter 396 Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Chapter 396 Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

Amelia glanced at Byron.

Byron got the hint and handed over the gifts they'd prepared in advance.

They were nutritional supplements for children, along with some high-end foods that Elise could also enjoy.

"You didn't have to bring gifts. We haven't even thanked you for taking care of Sharon," Elise said politely, though her eyes were already scanning the logos on the gifts.

When she saw there were no luxury handbags or anything like that, she casually set the gifts on the floor beside the sofa.

Both Amelia and Natalie caught the disappointment and disdain in Elise's eyes, but neither of them reacted.

Amelia pretended not to notice and said, "Bringing gifts is the right thing to do. Last time on the island, we really got Sharon caught up in our troubles. She was so frightened, and because of that fear, she fell down the stairs and broke her leg."

Elise froze for a moment and instinctively looked at Sharon.

Sharon kept her head down, looking timid.

Elise assumed that Sharon wasn't completely stupid and hadn't revealed the truth about how she broke her leg.

She smiled and picked up the conversation. "You can't blame yourselves entirely. She's always been clumsy, constantly hurting herself."

Amelia smiled and said, "Thankfully nothing serious happened, and she's pretty much recovered now."

Then she added, "Byron, Sharon must be tired. Take her to her room to rest."

Byron nodded and helped Sharon into her room.

Amelia continued from Elise's earlier comment. "Daryl, Elise, did Sharon fall down often before?"

"Not really? Or maybe she did, I can't remember clearly."

They really rarely paid attention to Sharon.

When it came to Sharon, they only did the bare minimum to keep her alive.

But thinking about it carefully, Sharon did seem to have injuries on her body quite often.

"Why are you suddenly asking about this?" Elise asked.

Amelia then pulled out a medical report.

"Take a look at this."

Daryl and Elise took it, and their eyes widened instantly when they saw the diagnosis.

"ALS?"

"That's right." Amelia and Natalie showed appropriate expressions of sympathy.

Natalie even reached out and held Elise's hand.

"You need to prepare yourselves. I'm sure you've heard something about this disease. In the later stages, she'll be completely unable to take care of herself."

"How could this happen?" Elise's face went pale.

She wasn't worried about Sharon, but worried that once Sharon couldn't take care of herself, she would have to care of her all the time.

How would she go out and have fun? How would she go shopping and dancing with friends every day?

Amelia spoke up. "This disease was discovered when Sharon was being treated for her fracture. We couldn't believe it either, and we were worried the local examination might be wrong, so we specially took Sharon to Dawnview General Hospital for another check after returning home. But unfortunately, the results were the same. Sharon does have ALS."

Daryl frowned deeply, and after a long pause he asked, "Can this disease be cured?"

Elise also said, "I heard you're the Miracle Physician. You can definitely cure Sharon, right?"

Amelia shook her head.

"I'm sorry, I don't have that ability. And currently, there are no cases of this disease being cured."

"But the good news is that with treatment now, we can slow down the progression and delay the onset of the late stages."

"There are also reports of people taking twenty years from onset to complete functional decline."

"Under normal circumstances, it develops into a severe stage in three to five years."

Both Daryl and Elise's faces darkened.

Twenty years, and she'd still end up paralyzed in the end, wouldn't she?

And they couldn't even marry Sharon off, because she was only ten years old now.

By the time she was old enough to marry, she'd already be paralyzed!

Who would marry a paralyzed wife?

"What are we going to do?"

Natalie said, "Of course, you should actively cooperate with the hospital treatment's plan. I've already asked the hospital, and it will cost at most three million dollars."

"Three million dollars?" Daryl and Elise both raised their voices at the same time.

Having them spend three million dollars to save Garry would be one thing, but Sharon?

Absolutely impossible!

Amelia spoke up at this moment. "What we're thinking is, when Sharon was in danger, everyone thought she wouldn't come back, so my mom gave you five million dollars. We won't ask for that five million back now. Use it all for Sharon's treatment and to hire caregivers."

Natalie continued, "We've already contacted the hospital. Just transfer the money to them today. Time is of the essence. I'll give you the account information now, you can transfer it right away, and then we'll all go together to admit Sharon to the hospital."

"No!" Daryl instinctively refused.

But seeing both Natalie and Amelia's eyes on him, he couldn't bring himself to say it directly. He just laughed awkwardly and said, "We were thinking that the medical facilities in Goldenvale might not be as good as those in Thornfield, so we'd rather take her to Thornfield for treatment."

"Then we'll help you contact hospitals in Thornfield."

"No need!" Daryl said. "You not taking the money back is already a huge help to us. How could we trouble you further?"

Elise chimed in, "Yes, we'll find a hospital ourselves. We can't trouble you anymore."

Amelia said, "We don't mind the trouble."

"But we'd feel too bad about owing you more favors."

Amelia and Natalie exchanged glances, then finally nodded. "Alright then. When Sharon is admitted to the hospital, let us know. We'll go visit her too."

"Yes, yes, yes. I'll tell you right away once she's admitted."

"In that case, we won't disturb you further. Please get Sharon to the hospital as soon as possible."

"Of course, she's our own child. We definitely care about her."

Daryl and Elise promised repeatedly.

Amelia then called Byron, said goodbye to Sharon, and left.

As soon as the door closed, Garry ran out from his room.

He had heard their entire conversation clearly.

When he heard Amelia tell them to use all five million dollars for Sharon's treatment, he almost couldn't stop himself from rushing out.

Now that Amelia and the others had left, he immediately asked, "Dad, Mom, are you really going to use that money to treat that waste? Didn't you say that money was for buying me a house in the future?"

"Keep your voice down!" Elise immediately scolded him, lowering her voice. "Don't let her hear! If she finds out and makes a scene outside, what if Natalie and the others find out?"

Hearing this, Garry relaxed a bit.

Daryl and Elise weren't planning to use the money for Sharon's treatment.

"So what are you going to do?"

Daryl and Elise looked at each other and both shook their heads.

They hadn't thought of a good solution yet.

But they definitely wouldn't use that money for Sharon's treatment.

"Or should we move? Go somewhere where nobody knows us. Whatever happens with Sharon's disease, we'll just let nature take its course. At worst, when she's paralyzed, we'll give her a few bites of food."

As they were discussing, Elise's phone rang.
