Chapter 44 Sebastian, I’m Tired
Chapter 44 Sebastian, I’m Tired
"So what you're saying is, you looked down on my mother's background. Not only did you refuse to accept her, but when she was pregnant with me and about to give birth, you kicked her out, leaving her fate unknown?"
Eve repeated coldly.
Roman nodded with difficulty, neither denying it nor able to deny it.
"And my father, after losing my mother, was imprisoned by you people. He became so depressed that he developed severe depression and eventually chose to end his life by jumping off a building?"
The more Eve spoke, the calmer her voice became, like the calm before a storm.
It made people's scalps tingle just watching.
Sebastian stepped forward and stood beside Eve, saying nothing, just quietly keeping her company.
"Yes." Hank nodded heavily. "What happened to Eve back then was my fault. I've regretted it. All these years I've been searching for you, hoping you'd come back. As long as you're willing to return to the Wests, I'll give you whatever you want."
Hank's voice trembled with anticipation.
Ha!
"So not only did you kill my mother and drive my father to his death, but now you want me to come back and rejoin the family?" Eve laughed coldly. "You've really got some nerve."
"Eve, don't be ungrateful," Joan jumped out, glaring at Eve with displeasure. "The Wests don't mind that you came from some small place, and we're prepared to accept you. Don't be so ignorant."
Slap!
Enough was enough.
Eve's barely contained rage exploded instantly. She slapped Joan hard across the face, sending her sprawling to the ground again just as she'd managed to get up.
"The Wests?"
Eve laughed coldly. "Forget about me going back. Even if someday I decide to return, it'll be for revenge. As for rejoining the family, you can forget about it."
"Eve..." Hank clutched his chest, looking at Eve with disappointment.
"Shut up," Eve roared. "If I hear you call my name like that again, I won't mind having the Wests removed from Harbor City."
Just hearing him say her name disgusted her.
Hurried footsteps came from outside the door.
George rushed in, pulling Lynn along.
Seeing Eve still standing there, his anxious heart finally settled.
"Dad, Mom, why are you here?" Eve stepped forward, standing in front of George.
"Child, are you okay? Did they give you trouble?"
George carefully looked Eve up and down several times, and only withdrew his gaze after confirming she wasn't injured.
"Dad, I'm fine. But is it true that I'm not really your daughter?" Although she believed Hank's words, Eve still wanted to hear it from George himself.
George looked up, meeting Eve's knowing eyes, and nodded with difficulty.
"Seventeen years ago, in winter, I was coming home from the night shift. When I passed the street corner, I saw a heavily pregnant woman lying on the ground, blood all over her legs, but holding a crying baby in her arms..."
George told the story bit by bit, his voice breaking.
"When that woman saw me, she handed you to me, then closed her eyes and passed away."
Eve's body trembled.
Winter, late night, street corner, a woman in labor...
The scene that appeared before her eyes made even the cold-hearted Eve feel angry.
She turned her head and stared hard at Hank. "The Wests really deserve to die."
"No, no, Eve, it's not what you think," Joan was scared, truly scared. She didn't want to lose everything she had now. "Grandpa knows he was wrong. He's been atoning all these years. You can't condemn us like this."
"Knows he was wrong?" Eve laughed coldly, looking at Hank mockingly. "What you've been doing all these years isn't about knowing you were wrong. You're just scared—scared that people will find out what you did, how you threw my mother out on a snowy night, and how you slowly took away my father's will to live until you drove him to his death."
Three minutes ago, if she hadn't seen the message Sebastian sent on her phone, she might have actually believed Hank's nonsense about knowing he was wrong and atoning for his sins.
"Eve, your mother's health wasn't good even when she was young. After getting pregnant, she could only lie in bed all day, so weak she could barely get up. And the Wests kicked her out in that condition."
Gripping her phone tightly, Eve raised her head and looked coldly at the three people from the Wests.
Forgive?
Why should she forgive a murderer?
That's right, a murderer.
Back then, everyone knew that in her mother's condition, being kicked out of the Wests could only end in death.
And yet the Wests did exactly that.
Now they actually hoped that a few years of vegetarian meals, Buddhist prayers, and living like a monk could erase everything that happened and wipe the slate clean?
What right do the living have to forgive on behalf of the dead?
"Ms. Moore..." Roman called out softly. "Father knows he was wrong. Since my brother's accident, he's been going to church to confess, regretting his wrong decision, atoning for it.
He even had us search for you day and night, hoping to find the child my brother left behind. Now that we've finally found you, my brother can rest in peace."
Roman glanced at Eve, and seeing no reaction from her, continued: "Everything the Wests have was built by my brother and sister-in-law together. Now that we've found you, I should naturally return it all. Tomorrow I'll go back and transfer everything to your name."
"Dad..." Joan called out softly.
"Shut up!" Roman snapped, then looked at Eve again. "If possible, I hope you can leave us just enough money to get by, enough for me to settle my family."
Eve still said nothing, just standing there quietly, listening quietly, watching quietly.
Under her gaze were the three bowed heads of the Wests.
Roman couldn't figure out how Eve could be Red Fox one moment and his brother's orphan the next.
Eve suddenly didn't feel like talking anymore. She nodded at George and Lynn. "Sebastian, please arrange for someone to take my parents home."
Sebastian nodded and gave Chase a look. Chase immediately understood and respectfully led the worried George and Lynn away.
"I'm tired," Eve said, her body leaning lazily on Sebastian's shoulder. "I wonder if Mr. Cole could take me home?"
Sebastian looked at Eve with a complicated expression and nodded. "My pleasure."
The unequal exchange between the two schools finally calmed down slowly after Eve left.
Even the livestream had been cut off at some point without anyone noticing.
Eve couldn't be bothered with whatever would happen next.
Taken away by Sebastian, Eve now sat in the car with her eyes closed, not wanting to move at all.
"Sebastian, I'm going to sleep for a bit. Don't disturb me."
