Chapter 76 : What’s The Point Of Sulking?
Allison watched her mother cry and grieve, yet her expression remained cold. She didn't even offer her a tissue.
Harmony, harmony. She only ever talked about harmony. She never once talked about fairness.
In a family where balance was already broken, where one person bore all the losses while another took all the benefits, true harmony could never exist. And the moment Allison refused to keep losing, she became the villain who shattered that weak peace.
Ruth, worn out from crying, lashed out again. “It’s your own fault for failing to keep a man. The Lopez family didn’t want you. It’s not like Sherrie stole anything from you. What’s the point of sulking and giving us the cold shoulder all day?”
Only a real mother could say something so cruel like this, and each word was like a sharp knife driven straight into her heart.
As if her pain only mattered if she could make Allison feel even worse.
Allison could only sigh. Ruth only ever dared to show this kind of drama toward her.
Ruth waited for Allison to explode. She expected shouting, tears, and a complete loss of control. But none of that came. Instead, Ruth became even more agitated, like a petty villain throwing a tantrum with no one willing to fight back. She fidgeted in her seat, and tension ran through her body.
“Madam Ruth, someone from the Lopez family is here again!” Ella practically walked into the room with her light steps, like a bird bringing good news.
Ruth’s heart jolted when she saw the man following behind Ella. She recognized him immediately.
It was Luke, the Lopez family’s steward.
He had come before, when the Lopez family sent the engagement gifts. Ruth quickly adjusted her expression, wiping away her tears as her attitude completely changed.
“Allison, get up quickly,” she said, pulling Allison along to greet their guest.
Behind Luke stood a woman carrying a suitcase.
Luke nodded politely. “Madam Ruth.”
After the brief exchange, he turned to Allison with a rare smile. “Looks like we arrived just in time. Ms. Rogers is home.”
That instantly reminded Ruth of something. She hurriedly reached for her phone and said, “I’ll call Sherrie right now and have her come back.”
“No need,” Luke interrupted her, gesturing to the woman beside him. “This is the tailor. She’s here to take Ms. Rogers’s measurements for her wedding dress.”
No need?
Ruth didn't fully process his words. She forced a smile. “If it’s for measurements, then Sherrie should definitely be here. A wedding dress has to be perfect.”
Luke gave her a strange look. “Of course. A wedding dress must be tailored to the bride.”
Then he turned his attention to Allison and politely ordered the tailor. “Please take Ms. Allison Rogers’s measurements.”
The words hit like a clap of thunder. Ruth was stunned on the spot. Even Allison was briefly shocked, too.
Ruth was the first to recover, forcing a laugh. “Sherrie will be back soon. It won’t take long…”
But Luke could no longer hide his irritation. “We’re taking measurements for Ms. Allison Rogers. It doesn’t matter whether Ms. Sherrie is here or not.”
“Allison…?” Ruth’s mind went blank. She turned to Allison with her eyes full of disbelief.
Allison frowned faintly and asked in a calm voice, “Are you sure you’re here for me?”
She had grown up running in and out of the Lopez mansion. Luke would never mistake her for Sherrie.
As if suddenly realizing something, Ruth hurried to add, “Right, right, Mr. Luke, perhaps there’s been some confusion. Sherrie also uses the name Allison…”
But Luke’s patience was gone. His voice turned sharp. “Madam Ruth, as a mother, don’t you know exactly who Allison Rogers is?”
Ruth’s mouth fell open and stayed that way for a long time. She couldn't even react. Allison, however, looked even colder than she did. She looked at Luke coldly and asked evenly, “You mean… the one engaged to the Lopez family is me?”
Luke gave a slight smile. “Yes.”
Ruth’s legs suddenly went weak. She dropped onto the sofa with a heavy thump.
Ella watched everything in silence. After a moment, she secretly walked away to call Nigel.
Allison showed no sign of happiness. She then said in a low voice, “I already signed the engagement break off. How could I possibly be marrying Ronan?”
Luke answered calmly, “Ms. Rogers, you’ve misunderstood. Mr. Jackson didn’t arrange for you to marry Mr. Ronan.”
Ruth, who had just lifted her head in shock, felt as if her heart was on a roller coaster.
It didn't matter who Allison married, as long as it was not Ronan.
Allison frowned. “Then who is it?”
Luke replied slowly, “It’s Mr. Taylor.”
What?
It was as if fireworks went off inside Allison’s head.
“Jareth?!” Ruth was still trying to wrap her head around everything. Then, as if something suddenly dawned on her, she asked loudly, “Mr. Jackson wants Allison to marry Jareth?!”
“Yes,” Luke replied.
Ruth nearly lost her voice. “How is that even possible? Jareth is Ronan’s uncle. If Allison marries him, wouldn’t that make her a generation above Sherrie?”
In the future, wouldn’t Sherrie have to call Allison “Aunt”? How could she ever accept that kind of humiliation?
Luke only sneered, his tone full of disdain. “That won’t happen.”
Ruth refused to back down. “Why not?!”
Luke cut her off coldly. “Because the Lopez family will never allow Ms. Sherrie to marry Ronan. Madam Ruth, you’re overthinking it.”
That single word, “overthinking,” struck Ruth like a merciless slap across the face.
At last, Luke stopped pretending to be polite.
“Even the engagement gifts from a few days ago were sent by Mr. Jackson on behalf of Mr. Taylor. They were meant for Ms. Rogers. They had nothing to do with Ms. Sherrie. The Lopez family never agreed to any marriage with her.”
Luke ignored Ruth completely. She looked as if she had been struck by lightning, utterly shattered.
He waved his hand quickly and said, “Hurry up and take Ms. Rogers’s measurements. The wedding date is tight. Don’t waste time.”
Allison coldly pushed the measuring tools away. She retorted sharply. “I knew nothing about this marriage. I don’t agree with it. Whoever promised you this marriage, go find them.”
Then she turned around and stormed back to her room, slamming the door shut behind her.
