Chapter 308 Pain, He Is Fragile and Vulnerable
Chapter 308 Pain, He Is Fragile and Vulnerable
Laughter and joy filled the Jenkins Villa.
There were smiles and tears.
Meanwhile, at the hospital,
time slowly passed.
The reporters staking out at the hospital noticed that Rhys had been gone for quite a while.
They caught on that something must have happened.
So they began making a fuss, demanding that Rhys come out and give them an answer.
"Rhys promised us before," someone said loudly. "He can't go back on his word!"
The hospital staff had no choice but to send someone to notify Rhys.
At that moment, Rhys was dealing with Isabella's situation.
What Isabella had done was outrageous —she was even faking illness! Even he, an outsider, couldn't stand it anymore.
When the hospital staff came over, Rhys was telling Isabella to stop making a scene.
Hearing what the hospital staff had to say, Isabella shouted even louder: "Say what? You can't tell them!"
Rhys yanked his hand free from Isabella's grip.
"You did it, but you don't dare admit it?" Rhys glanced at Isabella.
Isabella's eyes were full of hatred.
She really regretted not making her move sooner—otherwise she would have dealt with Rhys long ago.
How could she let Rhys show off in front of her like this!
"Either way, you can't tell them!" Isabella said. "Amelia and I are still in the middle of our competition. William wants me to win. If this gets out, how can I win?"
Rhys's response was to ignore her.
Isabella always had plenty of excuses.
If he really bothered to consider all of them, nothing would ever get done.
Rhys was just a working man who wanted to eat and clock out.
Actually, he should hint to William to give him a bigger bonus lately to make up for how disgusted he felt.
With that thought, Rhys had someone watch Isabella and left.
He walked all the way to William's hospital room.
Rhys knocked on the door.
No one answered inside.
Rhys thought for a moment, then opened the door anyway.
Whether or not to tell the reporters—this ultimately required William's approval.
With that in mind, Rhys walked to William's bedside.
"Mr. Brown, the reporters outside want Isabella's test results. Should we give them the information?" Rhys asked.
But William didn't answer.
His eyes were vacant.
"Mr. Brown?" Rhys asked again.
"You decide," William said in a hoarse voice.
"Alright." Rhys nodded, then turned and left.
So it was up to him whether to tell or not.
Isabella had been annoyed with him for a long time, and he'd been annoyed with Isabella for a long time too.
So of course he would tell!
Rhys left, leaving William alone in the hospital room.
Before long, the door was knocked on and pushed open again.
Felicity walked in.
"William, what's wrong?" Felicity's eyes were full of worry.
This hospital had a partnership with the Brown Group, so right after William was carried away on a stretcher, they immediately got the news.
"Grandpa and Grandma are still on their way. I was closer so I came first," Felicity said with red eyes.
She looked at William's injuries all over his body.
"It's because of Amelia again, isn't it?" Felicity asked loudly.
Why was it that both William and Alvin only had eyes for Amelia!
But William didn't answer Felicity's question. He just stared at a spot on the side, calm yet miserable.
"William!" Felicity couldn't help but call out.
But William still ignored her.
Felicity couldn't take it and turned to storm out, slamming the door.
Because of Felicity's forceful slam, the door bounced back open.
From the impact, it swung back and forth, creaking.
Before long, the Brown family's elderly couple arrived.
Cleo pushed Finn's wheelchair.
The two appeared by the bedside.
They exchanged glances. They had just learned about what had been happening recently.
They had known about William's feelings for Amelia for a long time.
Years ago, when Amelia was injured because of Lon for the second time, although they didn't know the details, William had truly almost lost control.
If they hadn't stopped him.
Lon might not have had the chance to be locked up and tried—William would have killed him directly.
Back then, it was Finn who said: "If Lon dies without explanation, how will you explain it to Amelia? If you lose your freedom because of Lon, then who will protect Amelia?"
Only then did William control himself and plan how to handle everything that followed.
Now, watching Amelia grow closer to York.
William had learned about all the ways he'd hurt Amelia.
How could he possibly bear it?
"William, what good does it do for you to be like this now?" Cleo said.
Finn also snorted and said, "If you want her, go win her back, instead of lying here in a daze!"
But William still didn't respond.
What could he do to make things right?
After what he'd done to her, how could she forgive him?
And how could he win her back?
Cleo and Finn said many more things.
But William just stared blankly at the ceiling.
Finally, the two wondered if he'd knocked his head stupid in the fall, so they went to find a doctor to ask about his condition.
Leaving William alone.
William lay on the hospital bed.
All around him were various machines, beeping.
He stared blankly at the hospital's white ceiling, his eyes vacant.
His body hurt.
Everything hurt.
He picked up his phone and found Amelia's chat window.
He wanted to tell her that he had also fallen down the stairs.
He was very sad.
He wanted to see her.
But then he suddenly remembered that she had blocked him.
He also remembered.
During her hospital stay, he hadn't visited her once.
The only time he went, he stood at the door of her room, looking through the balcony glass at her and Dash sitting close together.
He hadn't even seen her, just her blurry figure through the glass door.
Back then, he thought she and Dash had something going on and were putting on a show for him.
Now, knowing that she'd been injured, had a miscarriage, and severe bleeding, he understood that she had been very weak then, and Dash was just supporting her.
He remembered again, at the charity auction gala, on the rooftop, what she had said to him—
"Mr. Brown, don't show too much concern for people outside your circle, because that's being unfaithful to her."
"She'll be sad."
...
"Mr. Brown, some people don't matter."
"But some people, once they decide to leave, won't look back."
...
Pain.
Pain overwhelmed him.
He used to be proud, confident.
Since childhood, he'd been decisive and efficient.
Especially after successfully leading the Brown Group through its transformation and becoming the top of Shadow City's three major powers, he always felt he could control everything.
He never thought there could be anything or anyone in this world that could cause him such pain.
Now, he knew.
How could he go on without her?
Tears fell from the corners of his eyes.
He couldn't live without her.
