Chapter 45
Zora POV
"What do you want?" I cried.
"This was supposed to be quiet and easy. Why'd you have to fight back?" he growled.
What was he thinking that I would throw my hands in the air and let him nab me? On the other hand, who was the girl who saved me? She knew my name.
"I'd get out of here if I were you. You can't take two she-wolves at once," my savour growled.
She didn't know I was human.
She flashed her wolf in her eyes and bore her sharp teeth.
"I'm not scared of you," he barked and flashed his own wolf.
A door opened somewhere. "What's going on?" A tall bulky man in an army green shirt shouted.
I noticed the curtains flicker in most of the houses.
The attacker backed up.
"Hey!" the guy in army green shouted.
"Relax, I'm leaving. See you soon," he warned. He backed up and ran off.
"I doubt that," the girl to my right said.
"Did he hurt you girls? What kind of a sick bastard attacks two girls in broad daylight?"
I exhaled deeply and shook my head. "I don't know but he won't stop. I've got to go."
The buff guy nodded, scanning for the attacker but he was long gone.
"I'll keep an eye out."
"Thanks," I whispered.
I searched for my bag. I can't live like this. I'm exhausted. Someone's following me twenty-four-seven. My limited self-defence skills won't save me. My boyfriend's out of town, I don't think I'm in the right standing with the Alpha and my vampire helper was nowhere to be found. I should have known better than to trust one.
"Looking for this?"
I reached for my bag and mumbled a thanks.
"He's a real dirt bag, huh? Do you recognize him?"
I nodded. "Yeah, this isn't his first attack."
"You should go to the police or the Alpha."
I scrutinized her. She looked familiar but I couldn't put my finger on it.
"Who are you?" I finally asked.
"I-I… well…" She stepped back and fiddled with her fingers.
"You know who I am. Were you following me? This better not be a ploy to gain my trust and snatch me later."
She waved her hands. "No, who has that time? This might sound weird but I've known about you my whole life."
"That is weird," I frowned.
"My name is Zelda. I'm a year younger than you. My Dad… he had an affair with your Mom."
My heart slammed against my ribcage then jumped into my throat.
"What?"
"I know it's a lot. Is there somewhere else we can talk? It feels so open out here."
I bobbed my head. "Sure."
I took Zelda back to Cassidy's place. I have a sister. What if Zelda's mistaken though? I might not be the person she's looking for and I might not be that much help because I don't know much about my birth parents. My Mother's name is Astra Dean but that's all I know. She vanished into thin air when we were caught in Mr Dean's room.
I closed the door and shut the curtains. My heart was pounding and I felt like I was being chased again. I sat on the opposite side of the room. Zelda looked just as nervous as me.
"Wait, have you been the one calling me lately? How did you get my number?" I gawked at her.
She tugged on her dark hair. It was so similar to mine. When I looked closer we had the same nose. Oh my gosh, she might be my sister.
"It wasn't hard to get it. I just asked and someone gave it to me. I tried calling you but every time you answered I chickened out and hung up."
"I thought I had a stalker."
"I know it was a crappy thing to do and I'm such a coward." She hung her head.
"Why now? You said you've known about me my whole life." She could have reached out through social media a long time ago.
"Dad never wanted to disclose any information about you."
"Maybe he didn't want to annoy your Mom," I said.
She rolled her eyes. "He shouldn't have cheated on her then, besides that my Dad isn't the most rational mad on the planet."
"Are you sure I'm your sister?"
If this was true both of my parents were alive and I had a sister. I wasn't alone in the world anymore, but those parents did give me up for an illegal adoption.
Things just couldn't work out for me, could they?
"Of course I am. My Dad told me you were given up for adoption to the Fisher family. I'm sorry for your loss by the way."
"So… did you grow up with both your parents?" I couldn't look at her in the eyes.
"Yeah… more or less. Dad always had something eccentric going on but he was around."
Was I given up because I was an illegitimate child?
"Open up!" A fist hammered on the front door.
Zelda and I shot to our feet. We shared a concerned look.
"I know who it is. I'm sorry, I'll make him go away," she said.
"Come on, Zora," Kaleb demanded.
I tilted my head to the side. Did she know Kaleb? I opened the door and he tumbled into the house. He scanned the room before locking his eyes on Zelda.
"What are you doing here? I thought you were in danger!" he barked.
"Hey, what's the matter with you?" I swatted him.
"I handled it. I didn't need your help stop acting like a stalker!"
I stared at them, confused.
I faded into the background as they bickered back and forth.
"Does someone want to tell me what's going on? Kaleb, what are you doing here? Aside from being weird?" I asked when I was tired of being invisible.
"She's my fated mate. I thought she was in danger. I dropped everything and my wolf brought me here."
My jaw dropped. Oh wow.
I rubbed the back of my head. Well, this is awkward.
"How do you know him?" Zelda asked.
"I… I've known Kaleb my whole life. He's my best friend's brother." I've known Zelda for a few hours I didn't want to ruin our relationship by telling her me and her fated mate engaged in some risky behaviour.
"Wow, small world," she said and swallowed. "Zora's my sister."
Kaleb opened his mouth and then shut it again. "Oh… that explains why you smell similar."
"I think I should go. Zora, we need to talk more but not now. There's a lot going on in the Pack and it's not entirely safe for me. No, I don't need your protection," she barked at Kaleb. "I'll call you and this time I'll talk."
Zelda walked out of the front door without any protest from Kaleb or me.
