Episode 42 — The Locked Room, The Unspoken Language

Episode 42 — The Locked Room, The Unspoken Language
“You know, you could’ve just asked if you were curious. No need to sneak around like a thief, Rae. Hahaha.”
The voice came from beyond the hallway light. Soft classical music still played in the background, coming from the room that now stood completely open.

Rae froze....

Kenny stood casually at the doorway, one hand in his pocket, a small smile resting on his lips. He didn’t look angry. In fact, his eyes looked warm. Too warm.
Rae took a breath and slowly turned her body to face him. “And you?” Her voice was flat. “Aren’t you a thief too, Kenny?”

Kenny raised his eyebrows slightly, still calm. “Huh? What do you mean?”
Rae looked at him straight in the eye. “You stole my time, my life… my thoughts. Now even my nights don’t feel like mine anymore.”

Kenny didn’t reply right away. He stepped into the dark room and pressed a small switch on the wall. The light didn’t turn on fully, just enough to show that the room was empty.

There was no grand piano. No mysterious rocking chair. Only an old rug and plain white walls. The music stopped....

“If I did steal something from you,” he said softly, “maybe it’s because I wanted… to fix your heart. I know it’s been fragile, Rae...”

Rae didn’t answer. Her eyes followed Kenny as he walked toward a small chair in the corner of the hallway. He placed something there, a folded piece of cloth in deep red and black.

“I’m not angry you opened that door, Rae. Relax… I’m just a little disappointed you didn’t ask first.”
“I never know what’s allowed to be asked and what only gets half an answer.”

Kenny turned his head again and smiled. “Alright then... Tomorrow, come with me. Nine o’clock. Don’t be late.”
He glanced at the red and black fabric he had just placed. “I hope it fits.”

Without waiting for a reply, Kenny turned and walked slowly toward his room. His footsteps made almost no sound.

Rae looked at the red and black dress. Her hands were still cold. But her heartbeat had started to settle. She lowered her gaze.
Even now, she didn’t know if she should be afraid... or start trusting him.

Morning came. But it didn’t bring peace...
Sunlight passed through the thin curtains, dancing softly across the mirror. Rae stood in front of it, wearing the dress Kenny had given her the night before.

The fabric fell perfectly, flowing gently with the shape of her body. The cut was simple, but the fitted waist and neckline gave it an elegant look. Rae knew this wasn’t just any dress. It was expensive, clearly chosen for a reason.

She turned slightly, looking at her reflection. Something about her felt different today. Maybe it was the dress. Or maybe something inside her had already started to change.

Downstairs, she could hear the faint sound of a car engine. She took a deep breath and picked up a small clutch from the table.

At the stairs, Kenny was already waiting. This time, he wore a dark suit with a black shirt underneath, no tie. His hair was neatly styled. Behind him, two big men stood still like statues, ready to follow wherever he went.

Kenny looked up, his eyes moving from Rae’s head to her toes. “Rae… You look beautiful in that dress.”

Kenny really was struck by how Rae looked in the red and black dress he had chosen. But he had never liked showing admiration too openly, especially not in front of a woman. And yet, this time... he let it slip.

“Don’t start with fake compliments, Kenny.” Rae walked down the stairs slowly. “And you know... I haven’t even asked where we’re going.”
“Good,” Kenny replied, opening the car door for her. “Because I’m not asking for your permission either, Lady...”

The car moved slowly through the heart of the city, which was just waking up from a long sleep. Glass buildings reflected the soft morning light, and the traffic was still little bit empty, like the slow heartbeat of a city not fully awake.

Rae sat beside Kenny in silence. Her hand held her clutch, but her thoughts were somewhere else.
‘What am I doing? Am I part of a game I don’t even know the rules to?’

The car stopped in front of a building with grand but quiet art deco architecture. There was no name sign. No sign of a restaurant. But a man in a white suit opened the door right away, welcoming them inside.

The interior was warm and quiet. A crystal chandelier hung from the high ceiling. Soft jazz music played from hidden speakers.
In the corner, three men were already seated. They didn’t stand when Kenny and Rae arrived. They only turned briefly, and gave small nods.

Kenny pulled out a chair for Rae. “Sit. And just listen.”
Rae sat down. Her shoulders were stiff. In front of her, a round table with a clean white cloth.

The conversation started with simple words. The weather. Then a bit of stock market gossip. But soon, the words began to shift.

The first man, bald, with a big gold ring on his finger said, “The land on the South side is getting soft.”
Kenny nodded and sipped his espresso. “Then it’s time to plant seeds, right....”

The second man, white hair, gray suit, sharp eyes, gave a little smile. “The old ones must be pulled out first.Hahaha.”
There was a small laugh around the table. But Rae felt chills.

She didn’t fully understand. But she knew... this was not just lunch. This was some kind of code. Another language, one that wasn’t written down.
She glanced at Kenny. But he looked calm, like he was just talking about tomatoes in spring.

Rae looked down. She stared at her fingertips.
‘What I’m reading here isn’t just words. It’s a hidden world behind them.’

After the meeting, Kenny didn’t ask the driver to take them home right away.
Instead, he opened the car door and said, “Let’s walk for a bit.”

They walked down a clean and quiet sidewalk. In the distance, the sound of a fountain from a city park filled the silence.

Rae spoke first. “Back there… what did all of that mean?”
“Just Business talk....” Kenny replied briefly.

“What kind of business uses language like that?”
Kenny shrugged. “This world doesn’t always speak in words you find in books, Rae.”

Rae turned to him. “Then why did you bring me?”

Kenny stopped. He looked ahead, then turned to face her.
“So you’ll understand. I’m not playing this game alone.”

Rae narrowed her eyes. “Is that a threat?”
“No,” Kenny said softly. “It’s a warning. Changing things from the inside... it’s not as simple as pushing a button.”

They looked at each other.
Then Kenny started walking again. “But if you still want to know… you need to start learning the language.”

Rae walked behind him. Their footsteps echoed on the stone sidewalk.
‘I don’t know if what he’s doing is right. But one thing’s clear… I can’t go back to being the old Rae.’

That night, their room felt too quiet.

Rae stood in front of the mirror. The black dress now hung behind the door.
She slowly unzipped it. And as she folded the dress, something fell out from one of its layers.

A small piece of paper. Thin. With handwriting on it.
Rae picked it up. Just one sentence.

“Start learning the language, if we want to stay safe.”

The writing felt like wasn’t Kenny’s. Rae was sure. The style was different, unfamiliar.

She sat at the edge of the bed, reading the sentence again. And again.
Not because she didn’t understand. But because she knew: her life wouldn’t be the same after this.

Suddenly, in the corner of the room, a small camera on the ceiling moved.
The sound was barely there. But Rae turned her head.

The camera lens followed her movement.

Rae looked at the mirror.
And for the first time… she didn’t see herself. She saw someone who was starting to become part of a world she didn’t understand....

To be continued...
