Episode 34 – "The One Who Watches Without Touching
“Water…”
The voice was barely there. Just a breath that slipped between Rae’s dry lips.
Her forehead was damp with cold sweat. Her breathing was short and uneven. The pillow was damp. The blanket clung tightly to her body, shivering despite the warm room.
Morning was still dark, the sky outside the window showed no color at all....
Beside the bed, someone sat still. His back slightly hunched. The dim light from the bedside lamp lit up Kenny’s face, he looked tired, but alert.
Rae opened her eyes a little. Her vision was blurry, but she still recognized his face. In the fog of her fever, both logic and instinct seemed far away.
"I should be afraid… But why… do I feel so calm?" she thought. Her inner voice sounded like an echo from the bottom of a quiet well.
Kenny gently touched her forehead, saying nothing. The touch felt strange. Not unfamiliar, but not close either. Like a presence that had come too near but never really touched the core of her.
He stood up, then left the room. His footsteps made almost no sound. Rae could only follow his shadow with half-closed eyes....
A few minutes later, Kenny returned. He carried a glass of water and a wet towel in his hands.
Without saying a word, he helped Rae sit up slowly. He gave her the water, then pressed the wet towel to her forehead. Every movement was like a habit he had done many times, so calm, precise, unhurried, and… free of emotion.
Rae could only stay still. Not strong enough to protest. Not awake enough to reject the strange comfort....
A Day Too Quiet.....
Soft light slipped through the curtains as Rae opened her eyes. The ticking clock on the wall felt slower than usual.
The room which was clean, neat, with a faint scent of lavender, felt like a strange place trying to be something called 'home'.
Rae tried to move her body. Still weak, but not as weak as last night.
On the small nightstand, a wooden tray waited. On it, there were a bowl of warm soup, a glass of water, and a neatly folded note.
Her hand shook as she reached for it.
The handwriting on the note was clear and neat:
“If you can, eat a little.... If not, I’ll make more. —K”
Rae gave a little smile. But something warm started to rise behind her eyes. Not because the words were too sweet or too caring… but because she didn’t know what she truly felt.
“Is this kind of care… or taming?” she asked herself silently. “I really don’t understand Kenny…”
She put the note back. Then stared at the bowl of soup like there was something deeper inside than just broth and vegetables.
A Living Room Without Sunlight.....
Afternoon crept in slowly. The sky was gray. The sunlight only appeared as a faint glow behind the clouds.
Rae walked slowly out of her room. Her legs were still shaky, but the urge not to lie down was stronger than her weak body.
In the living room, Kenny sat alone. A book was open in his hands, but his eyes weren’t really reading. He was surrounded by silence, almost a part of it.
Rae stood at the doorway, quiet. Her breath was still heavy. But her eyes looked straight at Kenny.
“You walk like a ghost, Rae....” Kenny said without turning. “But I’m glad you’re awake!”
Rae let out a sigh. “It feels that way… like my body is just a shell, and everything important inside was burned away.”
She walked slowly to the sofa and sat down, keeping some distance between them. Silence wrapped around them for a few long seconds.
“Kenny… why are you taking care of me?” Rae finally asked, without looking at him.
Kenny closed the book. He placed it on the table. Then turned his face toward Rae.
“Because… you don’t know how valuable you are, Rae.”
The answer wasn’t sweet. It wasn’t romantic. But it wasn’t fake either. There was a truth in his voice that made Rae turn to look at him.
“You know… I’ve heard that sentence too many times from people who left me when I needed them,” she murmured.
“I’m not going anywhere...” Kenny said softly.
“But you never really stayed, did you?”
Silence. Kenny’s eyes shifted, but he didn’t answer.
A Night That Asked for Nothing.....
The sky was fully dark. Light from the window reflected softly on the wooden floor. Night air slipped through the small vents, making the room feel a bit colder.
Rae couldn’t sleep. Her eyes stayed open, staring at the ceiling that never seemed to change. Slowly, she sat up. Her feet moved toward the window. From there, the garden outside looked quiet under the soft glow of the garden lights.
And there he was… Kenny.
Sitting alone on the bench, wearing a thick black jacket. A lit cigarette rested in his hand. The smoke rose slowly, like a whisper no one wanted to hear.
Rae opened the door gently and stepped out....
As she got closer, she spoke in a quiet voice, half-joking, “Are you a stalker, or an angel of death, Kenny?”
Kenny let out a short laugh, without turning. “Hahaha.... Me? I’m just someone who can’t stand to see you fall apart alone.”
Rae sat at the edge of the bench. Far enough to keep space, but close enough to hear a heartbeat if they stayed quiet long enough.
“Do you know what it feels like?” Rae asked.
“The feeling of being broken?” Kenny looked at her.
“No. The feeling of wanting to give up… but having nowhere to give up to.”
Kenny nodded slowly. “I know… It’s the kind of feeling people don’t talk about, but leave sitting quietly inside their body.”
A Conversation That Shouldn’t Be This Calm.....
Silence. Only the soft sound of leaves brushing each other in the cold night wind.
“Who did you lose?” Rae asked suddenly.
“Not a person. A thing,” Kenny answered. “Trust. And maybe… the part of me that used to be honest.”
Rae looked at him. “You sound like someone who tried to do the right thing… but got blamed for it too many times.”
Kenny let out a long breath. “Or someone who really was wrong… but tried to fix it in his own way....”
Silence again....
“I always thought… guilt makes people better,” Rae said in a soft voice. “But now I know… it can also freeze us. Make us die inside.”
Kenny looked up at the sky. “Have you ever loved, Rae?”
Rae gave a quiet, dry laugh. “Hahaha… Why are you asking that now? Does it still matter?”
“It matters!” Kenny replied. “Because love… is the only reason anyone keeps going in a world that makes no sense.”
Rae closed her eyes for a moment. “And you, Kenny? Have you??”
Kenny didn’t answer right away. He let the smoke from his cigarette escape slowly.
“Real love… only shows up when you know you could destroy someone… but choose not to....”
His words cut deeper than they should have.
A Tiredness That Wants to Give Up...
Rae went back to her room. Her steps were slow,.Not because of the pain, but because her heart felt too full to hold everything.
She looked at herself in the mirror. Messy hair. Puffy eyes. Thin cheeks. But something in her gaze had changed. It was tiny spark of comfort not yet allowed to grow....
She whispered, barely louder than her breath, “Oh Goshhh.... Am I… falling in love with a monster?”
Her eyes stayed on the mirror. But what she saw didn’t feel like herself anymore…
Meanwhile, in the corner of the room, there stood a tall bookshelf.
And on top of it, a small camera blinked red.
Rae never noticed it. It was too well hidden.
But this time… it wasn’t Kenny watching.
Because Kenny never dared to place a camera in Rae’s private space....
