Hidden Loyalties
Hidden Loyalties
Time seemed to stop as Aidan stared at the woman in the wheelchair. His mother—alive? It couldn't be possible. Yet there she was, frail and thin, her eyes pleading for help.
"It's a trick," Maya whispered fiercely, gripping Aidan's arm. "That can't be Catherine."
The crowd buzzed with excitement as Victor smiled triumphantly.
"Many of you thought my wife died years ago," Victor announced, his voice booming through the speakers. "But she's been receiving special medical care after her tragic accident left her in a coma. Tonight marks her first public appearance since her recovery."
Across the room, Asher was frozen in shock, his hand halfway to his earpiece. Elijah pushed through the crowd toward him, face tight with worry.
"My sons," the woman said again, her voice weak but carrying across the silent ballroom. "Please."
Victor's smile never wavered. "My family will be reunited tonight. Aidan, Asher—come join your mother."
Security guards appeared at the twins' sides, not touching them but clearly ready to escort them to the stage.
"Go," Maya hissed. "Play along. I'll handle this."
Aidan moved forward in a daze, meeting Asher halfway to the stage. Together, they walked up the steps, every eye in the room on them.
Up close, the woman looked even more like their mother. The same gentle eyes, the same curve of her mouth when she tried to smile. But something was wrong. Her gaze seemed unfocused, distant.
"Mom?" Asher whispered, kneeling beside the wheelchair.
She reached for his hand, her fingers trembling. "My boy," she murmured. "So grown up."
Aidan stood rigid, unable to move. The woman turned to him, tears filling her eyes.
"Aidan," she said. "Always so serious."
A chill ran down his spine. It was exactly what his mother used to say.
Victor placed a hand on Aidan's shoulder, his grip painfully tight. "Family reunion at last," he said for the crowd's benefit. "If you'll excuse us, we need a private moment."
The audience applauded as security cleared a path to a side room. Dr. Mercer appeared, guiding the wheelchair off the stage with Asher following closely.
As they moved through the crowd, Aidan caught glimpses of their team: Elijah tracking them with his eyes, Audrey by the exit looking pale, and Maya—Maya was nowhere to be seen.
The private room was luxuriously furnished with plush chairs and a small bar. Once the door closed, Victor's smile vanished.
"Sit," he ordered the twins. Dr. Mercer positioned the wheelchair in the center of the room and stood behind it, hands resting on the woman's shoulders.
"Is she really our mother?" Aidan demanded.
Victor poured himself a drink. "What do you think?"
Asher hadn't let go of the woman's hand. "It's her," he said quietly. "But something's wrong."
"Very observant," Dr. Mercer commented. "Catherine survived the crash, but with significant brain damage. She's been under my personal care for years."
"Why hide her?" Aidan asked, struggling to process this revelation.
"Because she knew too much," came a voice from the shadows.
Maya stepped into the light, a gun aimed at Victor's chest.
Victor didn't even flinch. "Right on time, Ms. Rivera. I was wondering when you'd make your dramatic entrance."
"Step away from Catherine," Maya ordered. "Now."
Dr. Mercer smiled coldly. "You're outnumbered, my dear. Security is right outside."
"Are they?" Maya asked, just as the lights in the room flickered.
Outside, sounds of confusion rose from the ballroom.
"What did you do?" Victor demanded, his composure finally cracking.
"I didn't do anything," Maya replied. "But Carter Enterprises security is currently busy dealing with federal agents swarming the building."
Asher looked at Maya in shock. "What's happening?"
"I've been working undercover for three years," Maya explained, her gun never wavering from Victor. "Gathering evidence, building a case."
"You're the corporate spy," Aidan realized.
"Not a spy," Maya corrected. "An FBI agent."
The revelation hit the twins like a physical blow.
"You've been lying to us this whole time?" Asher asked, hurt evident in his voice.
Maya's eyes softened briefly. "Not about everything. But yes, my real mission was to bring down Victor Carter and James Mercer for fraud, embezzlement, and murder."
"This is absurd," Victor scoffed. "You have no proof."
"I have everything," Maya countered. "Every file, every conversation, every dirty deal. Including what you did to Catherine."
At the mention of her name, the woman in the wheelchair stirred. "Victor," she murmured. "My medicine..."
Dr. Mercer reached into his pocket, but Maya quickly aimed the gun at him.
"Don't move," she warned. "Whatever you've been giving her stops now."
The door burst open. Elijah and Audrey rushed in, followed by Alex.
"The feds are here," Alex reported. "They're sealing all exits."
Victor's face darkened with rage. "This isn't over. You have no idea who you're dealing with."
"I know exactly who I'm dealing with," Maya replied coldly. "Two men who built an empire on stolen ideas and dead bodies. Including Elena Mercer."
At that name, Dr. Mercer lunged forward. "You know nothing about Elena!"
Elijah stepped between Mercer and Maya. "She was my mother," he said, his voice shaking. "And you abandoned her."
The doctor froze, staring at Elijah with new eyes. "You're Elena's boy?"
"Your son," Elijah confirmed.
A tense silence filled the room, broken only by the distant sound of voices and footsteps approaching.
"Maya," Aidan said suddenly, studying the woman in the wheelchair more closely. "Something's not right. If she's been hidden all these years, how did we find DNA evidence of her death? The blood in the car..."
Maya's expression grew grim. "That's what I've been trying to figure out. The DNA matched Catherine's, but if she's alive..."
"Twins," the woman in the wheelchair whispered, her eyes suddenly clearer than before. "Catherine had a twin."
Victor moved with unexpected speed, grabbing a decorative letter opener from the desk and lunging toward the woman.
"No!" Asher shouted, throwing himself forward.
Everything happened at once: Maya fired, the bullet grazing Victor's shoulder. Asher collided with Victor, both men crashing to the floor. Dr. Mercer tried to flee but was tackled by Alex. And the woman in the wheelchair stood up, no longer appearing frail or weak.
"Elena," she said, her voice suddenly stronger as she looked at Elijah. "I'm not Catherine. I'm Elena."
Elijah staggered backward. "My mother? You're alive?"
The woman—Elena—nodded, tears streaming down her face. "They've kept me prisoner for years, using drugs to make me compliant. They wanted to use me as bait, to draw you all out."
"Where's our real mother?" Aidan asked, his heart pounding.
Before Elena could answer, the door burst open again. Federal agents poured in, quickly securing Victor and Dr. Mercer.
"Agent Rivera," the lead agent acknowledged Maya. "Good work."
Maya holstered her gun. "These men are responsible for multiple counts of fraud, embezzlement, and at least one murder—Catherine Carter."
As the agents read rights and applied handcuffs, Aidan turned to Maya.
"You knew all along? About our mother? About everything?"
Maya's professional mask slipped, revealing genuine emotion. "Not everything. I was assigned to investigate Victor after financial irregularities were flagged. But the deeper I dug, the more personal it became. Catherine was best friends with my mother, just like I told you. When I realized what happened to her..."
"You made it your mission to bring him down," Asher finished.
"Yes," Maya admitted. "And to protect you both. That part was never a lie."
As Victor was led away, he turned back, his eyes cold with hatred. "This changes nothing. The company is still mine. You've inherited nothing but trouble."
"Actually," Maya said, pulling out a folder, "according to Catherine's real will—which Victor suppressed—the company belongs to her sons. All three of them."
Elena reached for Elijah's hand. "You, Aidan, and Asher. Brothers in every way that matters."
The twins looked at each other, then at Elijah, the revelation of their shared inheritance hanging between them.
"There's something else you should know," Elena added, her voice dropping to a whisper. "Catherine may still be alive."
"What?" the three men gasped in unison.
Elena's eyes filled with fresh tears. "The crash was staged. Catherine escaped that night, but Victor has been hunting her ever since. That's why I pretended to be her—to protect her location."
"Where is she?" Aidan demanded.
"I don't know exactly," Elena admitted. "But she left a message... a clue only her sons would understand."
"What clue?" Asher asked desperately.
"She said to tell you: 'Look where the tangled hearts first began to unravel.'"
As the meaning of the cryptic message sank in, Maya's phone buzzed with an urgent alert. Her face paled as she read the message.
"What is it?" Aidan asked, noting her expression.
"Victor's escaped custody," Maya said grimly. "And he's not alone. Half the security team went with him."
Elijah's eyes widened in alarm. "If our mother really is alive..."
"He'll go after her first," Asher finished.
"We need to figure out that clue," Aidan said urgently. "Now."
But even as they spoke, across the city, a shadow moved through the darkness toward a hidden safe house where a woman who looked remarkably like Elena sat at a window, waiting for her sons to understand her message before it was too late.
