Chapter 83 If You Want to Live with Dignity
When Claire saw Alan again, it was at the hospital.
She brought a fruit basket and found the kid's hospital room.
Peeking through the glass on the door, the cozy scene inside made her heart ache with envy.
"What are you doing here?" The nurse's voice was a bit suspicious. "Mr. and Mrs. Fisher are in the room. Don't cause any trouble. Can you handle it if something goes wrong?"
Claire sneered. She hadn't eaten or drunk anything for days, so she looked pale and gaunt. She turned her head and gave the nurse a cold stare.
Seeing her icy gaze, the young nurse felt a shiver down her spine.
Claire didn't bother knocking; she just pushed the door open and walked in.
What the mistress had said that day turned out to be true. Indeed, she spent her birthday alone this year..
Since Alan didn't want to come home and cared so much about this kid, Timmy, she had to come and see for herself.
When Alan saw her, he was stunned at first, but then his anger flared up.
He rushed over, grabbed her wrist, and dragged her to the bedside.
Claire stumbled, dropping the fruit basket, and the fruits scattered all over the floor.
She struggled, but Alan's grip was tight, causing her great pain. "How could you be so heartless? Timmy is just a six-year-old kid!"
The young woman beside them started crying on cue, tears streaming down her face as she knelt at Claire's feet. "Mrs. Fisher, no matter what, it's all my fault. I'm the shameless one who seduced Alan. Take it out on me, but please don't hurt Timmy!"
Alan snapped, "He's my only child!"
Claire was being pulled from both sides, Alan and the mistress like two wild animals trying to tear her apart. She seemed to feel no pain and even started to laugh.
The eerie smile on her pale, haggard face made Alan feel a bit scared, but he still didn't back off. "Claire, I used to think you were the kindest and most compassionate person. How could you do such a thing?"
Claire turned her head, her vacant eyes staring intently at his hateful face.
She didn't speak, just kept looking at him.
Alan's face was cold. He gritted his teeth and threw her onto the hospital bed.
With her other hand being held tightly by the woman, Claire lost her balance and fell by the bedside, her forehead hitting a medical chart and leaving a cut.
Blood slowly trickled down her eyelids, cheeks, and chin.
Seeing this, Alan felt a bit of remorse.
The clever mistress cried even louder when she saw Alan's hesitation, and she pretended to faint and fall to the ground.
Alan quickly went to support her, patting her back to comfort her and helping her to a chair. Then he turned around, roughly grabbed Claire's arm, and pulled her up from the floor. "Listen, Timmy is my only child. If you dare to hurt him again, I won't be kind to you!"
Just then, the young nurse knocked on the door, saying the doctor wanted to discuss Timmy's condition with Alan.
Alan snorted, adjusted his collar, and said coldly to Claire, "Go home."
Then he ignored her and left with the nurse.
The woman stopped crying right on cue, grabbed a tissue to wipe away her tears, and her beautiful face twisted into a sinister grin. "Didn't I tell you? Can you really enjoy that cake all by yourself?"
Claire's face was pale, and she just stared at her coldly.
The woman looked at her disheveled state like it was some kind of joke, grabbed more tissues, and squatted down to wipe the blood off Claire's face.
The wound wasn't big or deep, but pressing hard still made Claire wince in pain.
The woman sneered, gritted her teeth, and took a few more tissues to carefully wipe her fingers.
On her ring finger, a huge diamond caught Claire's eye. The woman's fingers were beautiful, matching the diamond perfectly. "Mrs. Fisher, you see how much Alan cares about Timmy. I advise you to get a clue. None of us want things to get messy. If you don't mess with me, I'll treat you well."
After saying that, she casually tossed the tissue onto Claire. "If you want to live with dignity, don't stand in the way of Timmy and me. As a woman, you should understand that the moment a man's love is no longer on you, you are nothing."
She stood up, looking down at Claire with a triumphant look, knowing Claire couldn't compare to her in any way.
No wonder she was so confident. Alan's behavior in recent days had said it all. Claire had already lost.
Claire struggled to stand up, never saying a word the whole time.
Seeing her leave in a daze, the woman's expression became even more smug.
As Claire left the hospital, she coincidentally saw Daphne just getting out of a car.
She was carrying a box of pastries. The ones she bought for Joshua last time were finished, so she brought some new ones for him to try.
"Mrs. Fisher? What a coincidence to meet you here again," Daphne greeted her politely.
But as she got closer, she saw that Claire's face looked terrible, and with the wound on her forehead and the fresh blood, it was quite frightening.
Daphne quickly took out a tissue from her bag and carefully wiped her face. "Mrs. Fisher, are you okay? How did you get hurt? Let me take you inside to get it treated."
"No need," Claire's voice was slightly hoarse as she answered weakly.
Seeing her in poor condition, Daphne was about to say something more, but Claire spoke first.
She slowly raised her vacant eyes to look at Daphne. "Daphne, I want to ask you a favor."
Daphne shook her head. "Mrs. Fisher, I'm afraid I can't help you this time. Even if I wanted to, Otis wouldn't help. You can't regain a missed opportunity. I'm sorry, but I can't do anything."
"I understand," Claire smiled self-deprecatingly. Back then, everything had been under her control, and she had successfully had Daphne connect her with the famous lawyer Otis. But she ended up giving up such a good opportunity because of her hesitation and softness.
Wasn't it all her own fault? She deserved to be hurt because she had handed the knives to Alan again and again, letting him use them against her.
Sometimes, once an opportunity was missed, it was gone forever.
Claire didn't blame anyone.
