Chapter 3 — Jonathan’s POV

Around three pm Jonathan got up and walked to the kitchen making a bunch of noise. Then cursing when something went wrong. Lucy went quietly and hid in the corner watching him. Jonathan knew she was there and started humming while pulling down some things to make lunch for her. Then the humming turned into soft singing as he chopped onions and threw it in a pan.

"Why do you live down here?" Lucy asked softly.

"When I was young my father used to beat me and my mother daily. Then he died accidentally when sawing a tree while wasted. Then my mom a little over a month ago died from cancer, so I found this bunker and made it my new home," He answered tears forming in his clear blue eyes.

"And you need me for money why?" Lucy asked slowly coming from the corner.

"For food, water, the lights. No one really remembers the Jones family, so I stay hidden." He answered going back to cutting up veggies.

Lucy's heart broke in two. He had a family. Now he has no one.

"I... I just didn't take you for money.... I mean originally, I did until I saw the bruises and cuts on you. I didn't mean to look I swear but when the wind picked up your shirt kind of flew up and I saw. Sorry..."

Lucy looked down and wrapped her arms around her, trying not to cry. She hoped he wouldn't notice but he did and now she feels ashamed. The longer she tried to hold her tears in the more she wanted to cry. The concentration took so much that she didn't notice Jonathan kneeling in front of her. Startled, she leaned back banging her head on the wall.

"Oh! I'm so sorry I should have said something. Are you okay? Are you bleeding? God I'm an idiot. I'm sorry," Jonathan went on with the apology and Lucy giggled.

"I'm fine Jonathan, really it's not a big deal," Lucy said while giggling as she sat up.

When she sat up, she realized how close he was and how much she wanted to kiss him. Then he leaned forward, taking her chin in his hand softly and kisses her. Lucy was taken by surprise, but she kissed back wrapping her arms around his neck softly playing with his hair. Jonathan picked her up and placed her on the counter their kisses getting more heated by the second. Then he stopped and stepped away.

"What's—" Lucy began before Jonathan placed a finger over her lips.

"There is someone coming judging by the thumps hitting the earth it's a male. Now, if you want to escape go ahead. I will not stop you.  But if you wish to stay, then hide in the cupboard in the bathroom so I can protect you," Jonathan said moving away from her to make her decision.

She didn't want to leave after what happened she only knew one thing she wanted him. So as quickly as possible as she ran to the bathroom as Jonathan let out a shaky sigh rushing to the door. As soon as she closed the door, she heard a loud voice from the other side. He sounded mid-forties possibly fifty while Jonathan sounded like a child.

"Uncle please you're making a big deal over nothing. My father was nothing more than a cheating scumbag who was never going to pay you back. Now leave my bunker" Jonathan said trying to sound tough.

His uncle laughed and flicked something that sounded like a switchblade. Then all she could hear was pleading then a painful gasp and the door slamming shut. Quickly she scrambled out of the cupboard and saw Jonathan holding his side in clear agony.

"Lucy go, he will be back, and I can't have you here to get hurt," Jonathan said wincing through the pain.

"I'm not leaving you come on let's get you cleaned up," Lucy says going to help him up.

"Lucy please...You're the only person I care about right now and if you get hurt," Jonathan begged clearly losing this battle he was in.

Then the door opened with his uncle crashing down the steps with the devil's look in his eyes.

"Well, well, well, what do we have here?" He yelled. "What a pretty young lady you have here boy."

"Leave her alone she's not a part of this," Jonathan said getting up slowly.

His uncle smiled and grabbed her by the arm. Lucy screamed in pain Which made Jonathan reach behind the counter next to him and pulled out a small handgun.

"I said leave her alone," Jonathan said in a deathly tone.

His uncle let her arm go and she scurried behind Jonathan who was in a deadly stare down with his uncle. "Put that down son we don't want someone getting hurt."

"Oh, like you didn't hurt me and Ma after dad died. Like you didn’t just hurt Lucy or how you didn't stab me, your own family," Jonathan yelled, his body shaking. The hand that was holding his side went to the gun for better aim. "And for the record. I am not your son." Then he pulled the trigger and down his uncle went. A clear headshot was all Jonathan needed before he collapsed. And all he could hear was Lucy's cries begging him to stay awake.

"...Lucy," he whispered then he slipped into darkness.

Lucy panicked she had no idea what to do so she grabbed the first aid kit, a knife and a candle that was lit in the kitchen and rushed to his side. First, she opened the rubbing alcohol and poured it on the wound and then placed the knife over the flame trying to get it to the glowing orange color. Once it was glowing, she placed it over the wound to close it and wrapped it up after cleaning it again and waited. She didn't know how long he would be out for. Or if he would survive but she said a small prayer and covered him with a blanket and then laid with him.
