Chapter 40

Aron Curry narrating:

How insane can love be that makes you fear nothing, not even life itself. Even at Jeff's gunpoint I didn't care, I just wanted to be Laura's shield as I couldn't be last time. Even if love invades me, even if hope comes along and awakens in me the desire to have a family, I still can't get rid of the fact that I'm a mobster, I can't get rid of the enemies I've made. Seeing Laura's frightened eyes on the stairs, I could see the way she was afraid to run, afraid to go back up the stairs and end up leading the man to shoot me.

"I've had a few problems, but now I'm ready to go..." I whispered to Jeff.

"And you think I should wait for you to solve your problems before I leave my land? To leave where I command?" Jeff shouted, throwing my whisky bottle at me.

My lips whispered my love for Laura. My eyes were closed, expecting that at any moment I'd have a bullet in my head.

"I know how these things happen... I'm an understandable man, don't you think, Aron? In the name of the friendship we have and the trust I know you once placed in me... I'm going to give you a second chance. You'll have to make a very convincing speech, that of a man who is begging for his life, if you beg correctly, you'll take your doll and leave, if your speech isn't from the bottom of your heart... the man holding the gun will shoot you in the head. Correct?"

"Please Jeff let us go..." I said to him with trembling lips, I didn't know how I could beg for my life, I had never begged for anything, and I hadn't feared death until Laura came into my life.

"You need motivation to be able to beg... so I'm going to give you some much-needed motivation, Aron." When Jeff whispered his words of hate, I understood exactly what my motivation was for begging. As predicted, one of his men grabbed Laura by the hair, forcing her down the stairs, while she begged screaming for him to let her go, I twisted around trying to find the right words, to convince myself that I needed to beg, Laura was frightened, Jeff's hands were roaming her body with desire, but it was as if I was blocked enough not to be able to say anything, I couldn't lose my pride to beg Jeff and I felt like a coward for it. Watching the woman I love being tortured.

"Please... please Aron, you just have to ask." Laura told me with difficulty through her tears and it tore me up inside.

"Please Jeff, leave her, she has nothing to do with this."

"Is that the best you can do, Aron? Can't you beg for the life of the woman you love?" Jeff shouted, my chest heaving as I stopped myself from seeing him smoothing Laura's body.

He pushed her to a part of the room where there was no way of not seeing them, walked towards her with a knife in hand, running the knife across her body, telling her how much he wished I had sold her, that she belonged to him and he could beg to protect her. I could see Laura's feelings cooling, after all, how can I be good to her if my pride prevents me from protecting her? Jason looked at me with hatred because I couldn't beg, I couldn't take away his reason, even he was almost begging to save her.

"Please Jeff... I'm begging you to let Laura go, to let me go, just let us go, I know how wrong I was with you and I promise I'll never go back to Milan, I'm begging you Jeff, please let us go." I shouted as I punched the floor.

"Milan doesn't have my name on the welcome sign. Your promise isn't good enough for me."

"Jeff please... let Laura go, I can't lose her and I can't bear to see her get hurt, hurt me, I'm the one who came to you. And I'm begging you not to let me...." Before I could finish my words, the sound of a gunshot hitting Jeff made me turn around and watch him fall slowly.

"Come on... get the girl." Tommaso shouted as he fired at the man holding me hostage. Laura ran into my arms, and I felt a stab in my chest as I saw her look worriedly at Jason who was still a hostage.

"Come on, he'll be all right..." I said, still scared, pulling Laura who ran with me to the car.

As we left the house we could hear two shots coming from different guns, and Jason's scream. Punching the steering wheel, I couldn't deny that it pained me to feel that Jason might be one of the victims. But I had to get away. I had to keep going.

Gerald was waiting for us at the entrance to the jet, we got in in silence, I was questioning enough the fear inside me, the fear that Jason had been the victim. Laura sat down next to me, her tiredness led her to lay her face on my shoulder, I wanted to tell her my feelings, but I couldn't. "Why was it so hard to beg?

"Why was it so hard to beg?" Laura whispered.

"I don't know... maybe my rudeness stopped me, it hurt to see you there, to know that Jeff's hands were on your body, to see the fear in your eyes. But it was as if I couldn't, no I could. I grew up with my father saying that a man doesn't beg, I can't say that I feared death, I never feared it, but everything changed when I came to love you Laura."

"What do you think it's going to be like now? Are we going to be a family and then I'll cook for you, I'll make you a hot coffee every day at six in the afternoon, on the days when I'm in a better mood maybe a cake, I'll get frustrated that you want to watch soccer at weekends, and we'll make love once a week? Laura said in a low voice as if her thoughts were imagining exactly what her mouth was whispering.

"Is this how you imagined it would be after marrying Edgar? Without realizing my words, I just blew on them. ''I'm sorry I shouldn't have...'' I stopped, seeing how Laura's countenance changed when she heard Edgar's name.

''No, it's okay... I couldn't really imagine what it would be like with Edgar, I never really thought about it. I just let the wind touch us.'' Laura replied in her sweet voice.

At that moment, tasting the insanities of love, I realized that it's not just about not fearing anything else, but about how difficult it becomes to erase even loves that break us.

"The only certainty I have is that I couldn't make love to you just once a week. Looking into Laura's eyes, I kissed her while my hands slid down her neck. The other insanity of love was how the pleasure became doubled.

"It's becoming a cliché to have sex on a jet... Laura laughed as she sat on me.

"I don't mind living a cliché with you. I told her, going against my rule of hating clichés.

Elated, I whispered to Laura as I put her on all fours with her face pressed to the window of the jet, watching from below as I felt her get wet with my cock sliding through her. I could never not want to feel her. But I couldn't hide my fears, we're going back to Warsaw. Where Edgar hides.
