Chapter 56 56
EZEQUIEL
It was my first night officially joining them. I’d insisted on it over and over, because I was tired of being alone. The schedule here didn’t suit me, and my wolf never felt right among vampires. I didn’t think I’d ever get used to this. Never.
Enzo walked beside me through the crowd of vampires, and I was the only wolf in the entire kingdom. How long could I stay this tense? I felt like my organs were shriveling little by little under all the pressure invading me. And yes, every hair on my body stood on end whenever I was among them.
The uneasiness from the other night still clung to me, even though no news had come from my father. Did that mean everything was fine? I knew Emma would take good care of Lois. After my rejection, she probably didn’t even want to see me, but I trusted Emmanuel. My brother would bring us together again. The three of us would reunite sooner or later.
I stopped to watch a small performance ahead. My eyes were hypnotized by such a feat, and for the first time, the crowd’s eyes weren’t on me—but on the strange-looking woman performing.
I turned to my right to ask Enzo what kind of creature she was, but he wasn’t there.
He had vanished.
That made me nervous.
I tried to refocus on the act, but I couldn’t.
“Relax. Nothing’s happening.” Being surrounded by vampires made me tense all over again, and I became even more aware of it.
When the show ended, a cold sweat slid down my back. They no longer had anything to distract them—and among them was me, an intruder.
No vampire was allowed to cross into the wolf kingdom; doing so meant death. Yet here I was among them. Of course they thought it was unfair. They knew where I came from, and many didn’t hide their disdain for my father—even though Enzo had an excellent relationship with him. So much so that he trusted him with my life to bring me here.
Some of them flashed their fangs, and my wolf growled, which only angered more of them.
Was I about to face off against hundreds of vampires?
“What if your father sent you here to die?” Enzo said at my ear. He had appeared out of nowhere again. Where had he gone? Relief washed over me just knowing he was back. “Imagine the scenario. I leave for one second, the vampires see you and they feel your fear—because every drop of sweat sliding down your body, they can sense it as it falls or soaks into your clothes. Your breathing picks up, and your wolf pushes forward, because it knows this could be a complicated situation. Instinct never fails, Ezequiel.”
“Is this a complicated situation?” I asked, considering stepping back to give myself room to shift. If I was going to die… I would do it fighting.
“A little.” His words made me swallow hard. “I left because I had a message from your father. He wants to see you. It looks like Lois and Emmanuel have run off.”
“What?!”
That was the complicated situation.
What was happening out there that made Emma decide to flee with Lois?
