Chapter 50: I Will Be Waiting for You

Chapter 50: I Will Be Waiting for You
Several months had passed since the night law enforcement stormed Pablo’s secluded villa, and time had begun to move in a strange way for Vanya. There were days when everything felt as though it had happened just yesterday, and others when she felt as if she had lived through several completely different lifetimes. The villa was now nothing more than a relic of the past. Pablo had been arrested and was finally being held accountable for his crimes, while the three women who fell victim to his twisted psychological experiments were receiving medical care, their recovery was far from complete, but at least they were in a safe environment.
Damian himself was still behind bars.
In the beginning, Vanya had done everything in her power to secure Damian’s early release. She provided extensive testimony to the police, detailing every piece of information she possessed regarding Pablo’s operations and how Damian had been subjected to those experiments as well. But reality was far more unyielding than she had envisioned, Damian still had to face the consequences of his own past actions. Vanya despised that painful reality, yet she knew deep down that Damian had never asked her to shield him from those repercussions.
Because of those words, Vanya eventually stopped searching for shortcuts. She simply waited.
Her daily routine gradually returned to simple, quiet moments—working again, reconnecting with friends she hadn't seen in ages, and slowly rebuilding the life that had been torn away from her when she was kidnapped. Yet on certain nights, she still awoke to vivid nightmares: the grand villa, the deafening exchange of gunfire, and the image of Damian’s face as cold steel cuffed his wrists. Each time she woke up, it took her a few precious seconds to realize she was safe in her own bedroom—there were no locked doors, no guards standing post outside, no one forcing her to submit to their will. Oddly enough, that newfound freedom sometimes felt hollow and lonely, simply because Damian was not part of it.
On a warm afternoon, Vanya sat inside a quiet corner of a small café, reading a letter she had just received. A letter from Damian. She had received a few over the past months, yet every single time she saw his distinct handwriting across the envelope, her heart raced all over again. Damian’s neat script filled several pages—devoid of overly romantic declarations, as Damian had never been that kind of man. Instead, he wrote about his routine inside prison, the new habits he was slowly adapting to, and the tiny, subtle details of life he had never bothered to notice before.
Near the very end of the page, there was a single sentence that made a soft smile break across Vanya’s face:
Do not wait for me if it means losing your own life in the process.
Vanya let out a quiet sigh. “Still as infuriating as ever,” she murmured fondly, folding the paper carefully before slipping it back into her bag. Of course she knew Damian was right, she shouldn't put her entire existence on hold simply because she was waiting for someone. And she didn't. She learned to laugh again, spent time with her friends, worked hard, dined at her favorite restaurants, and greeted every new morning without fear lingering in her shadow. Yet deep within her heart, there remained a sacred space she refused to hand over to anyone else. That space belonged solely to Damian.
A few weeks later, another message arrived, this time from Elijah. The encrypted text was brief: I’m still alive.
Vanya stared at her phone screen for a long moment before a second message popped up: Don’t worry about Damian. I haven’t forgotten him. I’m going to find a way to help him.
Vanya offered a small, knowing smile. Elijah remained unchanged, a man of very few words, but one who always honored his promises. She had no idea where in the world he was hiding or what schemes he was putting into motion, but she held absolute faith in him: if Elijah declared he would save Damian, he would show up one day to fulfill that vow.
A full year passed.
Vanya stood by the window of her high-rise apartment, quietly enjoying a warm cup of coffee. The late afternoon sunlight filtered gently through the blinds, illuminating a room that felt starkly different from any place she had inhabited before—no extravagant luxury, no armed security, only a simple, honest life she had chosen entirely on her own terms.
Resting on her desk was a framed photograph: a picture of herself alongside Damian, taken before their world spiraled into chaos. In the photo, Damian still wore his cold, guarded expression that made him seem entirely unreachable. Yet if one looked closely into his dark eyes, there was something impossible to hide. Deep, unspoken emotion.
She was well aware it might take a long time—perhaps Damian would have to serve several more years behind bars, perhaps by the time he was finally free, the world around them would have shifted dramatically, and perhaps they would no longer be the exact same people they were before all of this began. But Vanya felt no fear. For the first time in her life, she wasn't waiting for Damian out of obligation or force—she was waiting because she consciously chose to do so.
Once, Damian had stolen her away, leaving her with no choices of her own. Now Vanya held all the freedom in the world, and with that absolute freedom, she still chose Damian.
She gently placed the photograph back on the desk. Just then, her phone vibrated with an incoming message.
It was Elijah.
Her heart pounded against her chest far faster than she anticipated. The message contained only five words: I’ve found a way.
Vanya stared at the glowing screen without blinking, and for the first time in what felt like forever, a radiant smile spread across her face. She had no idea what challenges lay ahead, nor whether the plan Elijah had devised would ultimately succeed. But she knew one fundamental truth, their story was far from over.
She walked back to the window, watching the sun slowly dip below the city horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of gold and crimson. Once upon a time, she had believed her life was effectively over the moment Damian dragged her away into his dark world. She had been wrong. Her life was simply guiding her along a path she could have never envisioned.
And perhaps, one day, when Damian finally stepped out into the light, their paths would align once more. Not as captor and captive, not as two people consumed by inherited hatred, but as two human beings who had traversed the deepest darkness together and still chose to love one another.
Vanya smiled softly, her heart finally at peace. She didn't know the exact day Damian would return. But this time, she wasn't afraid of the wait.
Because she knew, deep in her soul, that Damian was coming home.
