Chapter 241 Noble Panic
Chapter 241 Noble Panic
The Blight. The whispering among the nobility stopped instantly. A profound, heavy silence fell over the throne room. The courtiers exchanged looks of pure, unfiltered panic. They remembered the girl in the cage. They remembered the delicate songs. The realization that the fragile pet they had mocked was now a warlord marching a plague to their doorstep shattered their arrogant security.
The Emperor stared down at Draven. The glowing, unnatural light beneath his skin flickered, betraying a sudden, deep fracture in his composure.
He was afraid.
He had built a machine to drain the magic from the world, channeling it all into his own veins. He had created the dead lands. He had known that a reckoning would eventually come, but he had believed he could keep the rot contained inside my body. He had never considered that the poison would learn how to march.
The Emperor raised his hand again.
"I do not care what the scavengers call her," the Emperor commanded, his voice trembling with a dark, violent rage. "Reinforce the outer gates. Lace the artillery with pure silver. Draft the lower rings. If the Siren brings her rot to my city, you will bury her under a mountain of steel."
He slashed his hand downward.
A second whip of white fire struck Draven, tearing through the side of his ribs. Draven collapsed completely, his armored body hitting the marble with a heavy, hollow thud. He lay still, his breath coming in shallow, wet gasps.
"Get him out of my sight," the Emperor ordered, turning his back on his broken commander.
Two royal guards rushed forward, grabbing Draven by the arms and dragging his heavy, bleeding form across the pristine floor, leaving a thick trail of dark red blood smeared across the white marble.
The thrall whose eyes I was looking through lowered his head further, terrified of drawing the Emperor’s furious gaze.
The vision began to waver, the edges of the throne room blurring into dark shadows.
A sudden, sharp spike of pain shot through my own right hand.
I gasped, my eyes snapping open.
I was back in the war tent. The heavy drumming of the rain filled my ears. I pulled my hand back from the silver basin with a violent jerk.
The dark memory blood in the bowl was hissing loudly.
While I was lost in the vision, my anger had surged. The dark, freezing rot coiled in my chest had slipped past my control. The toxic sludge had leaked from my fingertips directly into the basin. The silver bowl was melting, turning pitch black as the decay ate through the expensive metal. The hissing blood evaporated into a foul-smelling, dark smoke.
Klaus’s large hands clamped down on my shoulders, his grip entirely grounding. He pulled me back against his hot chest, shielding me from the smoking ruin on the table.
"Breathe," Klaus commanded, his deep voice cutting through my lingering disorientation. "You are here. The magic is yours. Pull it back."
I closed my eyes, focusing on the dark fire in my veins. I reeled it in, locking the heavy, toxic energy back into the center of my chest. The trembling in my fingers stopped.
I opened my eyes and looked at the table. The silver basin was completely gone, reduced to a dark, smoking stain on the thick wood.
Seraphina stared at the melted metal, her crimson eyes wide with awe. Cassian shifted uneasily in the shadows. They had seen what I did to the ancient trees, but witnessing the casual, entirely destructive nature of my power up close was a constant, terrifying reminder of who they were dealing with.
I pushed my chair back and stood up. I turned to face the Vampire Lords, ignoring the ruined table.
"He is terrified," I told them. My voice was completely steady, carrying a cold, ruthless certainty.
"He is mobilizing the entire Imperial army," Cassian pointed out, stepping forward. His aristocratic face was drawn tight. "He ordered silver artillery. He will draft the commoners to create a meat shield around the Spire."
"He is bleeding his own commander on the floor because he knows his walls cannot stop me," I countered, looking directly into Cassian’s glowing eyes. "He is relying on silver and steel to fight a plague. The nobility is panicking. The court is fractured. They will turn on each other the moment we breach the outer gates."
I reached out, resting my hand on the hilt of the rusted iron dagger at my waist.
"The Emperor drained the earth to make himself a god," I said softly, the words tasting like ash and old blood. "He forgot that gods can rot."
Klaus stepped up right beside me. He did not wear a shirt, and the deep, pink scars of his silver burns were a stark reminder of the violence we had already survived. He crossed his massive arms over his chest, his bright sapphire eyes scanning the vampires.
"We do not wait for him to build a mountain of steel," Klaus ordered, taking command of the tactical reality. "We strike while Draven is broken and the army is scrambling. Seraphina, you lead the scouts. Find the weak points in the silver artillery lines. Riven’s Outcasts will carry the heavy siege shields. We march at first light."
Seraphina bowed her head in a swift, entirely respectful motion. "It will be done, Grand Admiral."
The Vampire Lords filed out of the war tent, stepping back into the freezing rain.
The heavy canvas flap fell shut behind them, leaving Klaus and me alone in the dim light of the sputtering oil lanterns. The smell of the melted silver still lingered in the air, a harsh reminder of the destruction I carried in my skin.
I turned to face Klaus. The adrenaline of the vision slowly drained from my muscles, leaving a deep, heavy ache in my bones. I looked at the thick, pink scar on his collarbone, remembering the smell of Draven’s burning flesh in the throne room.
"He tortured him," I murmured, stepping into Klaus’s space. I rested my forehead against his warm, solid chest. "Draven failed, so the Emperor burned him alive in front of the court."
Klaus wrapped his arms around me, holding me tight. His chin rested on the top of my head.
"The Emperor demands perfection, and he repays failure with pain," Klaus replied, his voice a low, dark rumble. "He is breaking his own shield. Draven is a ruthless hound, but even a hound will turn on its master if you beat it enough."
