Chapter 219 The Net Closing In
Chapter 219 The Net Closing In
She comforted the badly frightened Garth, telling him several warm stories until the little guy fell into a deep sleep in her arms. Only then did she carefully place him on the bed.
She looked at Garth's sleeping face, tear stains still at the corners of his eyes, her fingertips gently brushing over the wound on his forehead. The heartache and lingering fear in her eyes were almost overflowing.
She wasn't sleepy at all.
Everything that happened during the day kept replaying in her mind like a horror film, impossible to shake off.
She walked to the window and pushed it open, letting the salty sea breeze cool her burning cheeks.
The night was deep, waves continuously crashing against the rocks with low, rumbling sounds.
This sound didn't calm her down. Instead, it made the restlessness in her heart grow worse.
She knew Sam was just a small pawn. What was truly terrifying was the person hiding in the shadows, who could precisely plant people inside Sapphire Sky Guild and attempt to steal core secrets.
She suspected this force might be connected to the Coffin Organization that tried to assassinate Henry at The Smith Mansion, and to Skylar who had put a bounty on her life.
An invisible net seemed to be quietly closing in from all directions, targeting her and the people she cared about.
And she was right at the center of this net.
Just then, there was a gentle knock on the medical room door.
John's tall figure appeared in the doorway. He still carried a faint smell of blood and the cold dampness of the dungeon, clearly having just come from the interrogation room.
His face looked terrible, his features marked by deep exhaustion and worry.
"Did he talk?" Sylvia didn't turn around, her voice carried away somewhat by the night wind.
John walked to her side, looking out at the dark sea, and shook his head, his voice hoarse.
"No." He pulled out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, seeming about to light one, but seeing the hospital bed nearby, he forced himself to resist. "He's keeping the secret tight. I've tried everything, but he just won't say who's behind this."
These words made Sylvia's heart sink. She rubbed her throbbing temples as the exhaustion from a sleepless night washed over her like a tide.
She knew Sam was just a sacrificial pawn pushed forward, the real threat was hiding much deeper.
Seeing her tired expression and the faint dark circles under her eyes, John's heart tightened. He softened his voice and urged, "You should go rest. I'll handle this and make sure you and the child get answers."
Sylvia nodded without saying more.
She really did need to calm down. Her nerves were stretched to the breaking point.
She returned to the medical room. Garth was still sleeping soundly, his steady breathing soothing her, slowly calming her racing heart.
She took off her jacket and lay down beside Garth, but couldn't fall asleep.
Just then, her phone on the nightstand vibrated again.
Sylvia looked at the name, and her mind uncontrollably flashed back to last night's crude deepfake video and Skylar's deliberately made moaning sounds.
The fear and anger she'd felt over Garth hadn't faded yet, and now a fresh wave of irritation was stirred up.
She pressed her lips together but still answered the call.
"Sylvia, how are you and Garth? I just finished up." On the other end, Henry's voice carried a trace of barely noticeable exhaustion, but more than that, deep concern.
Sylvia wasn't in a good mood. She walked to the window, lowered her voice, and spoke with a touch of sarcasm. "Worthy of a big CEO, truly busy with important matters. You finally finished? I thought you were up all night last night, lost in other pleasures, too busy to care about me."
Henry on the other end was clearly stunned, obviously not following her train of thought. "Sylvia, what are you talking about?"
"What am I talking about?" Sylvia laughed coldly, her eyes sharp. "Wasn't last night's phone call with all that moaning exciting enough? Had to call again today to relive it? Henry, you guys are pretty bold."
Henry's mind completely stopped. Totally confused, his handsome face instantly darkened. "What moaning? Sylvia, explain yourself clearly."
"Still playing dumb?" Sylvia's anger flared up immediately, so she laid it out plainly. "Last night Ms. Reed used your phone to call me and gave me a live broadcast of a 'good show.' So, did you enjoy yourself?"
Now Henry finally understood.
A surge of anger at being wrongly accused and murderous intent toward Skylar instantly rushed through him, blood roaring in his ears, his gaze becoming sharp and cold.
He immediately opened his phone's call history, scrolling from top to bottom, but there was no record of calling Sylvia last night.
"I didn't!" Henry's voice was both urgent and heavy, carrying a hint of grievance he himself hadn't noticed. "I was in meetings all last night, my phone was in my office. I never called you, and there's no record of it in my call history!"
Hearing his defense, Sylvia's anger actually subsided a bit.
If that was the case, the only possibility was that Skylar snuck in while he was in a meeting, took Henry's phone, and called her.
Sylvia laughed coldly. "It seems everyone knows your phone password."
Henry felt even more wronged. "You're the only one who knows my password."
Hearing Henry's aggrieved words, something struck Sylvia's heart. She hadn't really believed it anyway, she was just venting the bad mood that had built up all night.
"I know it's fake." She sighed, her tone softening. "That kind of crude deepfake video with synthesized audio, only an idiot like Skylar would think it's a clever trick."
She paused, her tone becoming serious again. "Henry, I'm not telling you this to fight. I want to remind you that Skylar is definitely not as simple as she appears. She managed to get your phone without anyone knowing and delete the call records. Do you believe an innocent-looking woman could manage something like that?"
Henry's face completely darkened, the pressure around him dropping to a frightening level.
He immediately called the intercom. "Evan, check all the surveillance footage of the CEO's office from ten to midnight last night, right now."
Less than two minutes later, Evan's reply came through, his tone somewhat grave. "Sir, the surveillance for that time period just happened to malfunction. Nothing was recorded."
Just happened to malfunction.
A cold murderous intent flashed in Henry's eyes.
"Sylvia," he picked up the phone again, his voice full of suppressed anger and guilt, "I'm sorry. This was my oversight."
"Sorry doesn't help now." Sylvia leaned against the window, looking at the dark sea in the distance. "Watch her closely and make sure she doesn't stir up more trouble."
"I understand." Henry's voice was as solemn as an oath. "I will definitely give you an explanation for this. Once I finish what I'm handling, I'll come to you right away."
"Okay." Sylvia responded and hung up the phone.
