Chapter 336 Can I Believe Todd?
Daisy leaned against the window and looked out of it. Without the stars in the night sky, a full moon hung in it. As the breeze blew, the purple gauze curtain fluttered, just like her messy thoughts.
What Todd had said lingered in her mind, "I'm serious. Do you want to be my girlfriend?"
"I know what's going on in your family. I'm sorry that I investigated you, but I'm worried about you. You didn't say anything to me. Trust me. I won't let Karl and his mother hurt you. I will be good to you and love you forever. I will never cheat on you."
"You probably can't believe me. It's fine. How about we draw up an agreement? If I betray you, you can take everything I have. Although I only have one company, I will work hard to give you the best."
When Daisy was seven years old, her father betrayed her mother. Back then, Daisy broke down. She resorted to every trick to get her father to change his mind but failed. In the end, she could eat in the living room with her mother whenever her father brought different women home.
She didn't leave the abnormal family until she grew up and went abroad.
It was only then that she felt that she had truly come back to life.
Ever since Daisy was a child, her mother had been crying all day. She felt bitter for her mother and was also soaked in tears. Day after day, she became heartless.
Her father had once cut off all ties with his family for her mother. He had indeed loved her mother. However, people were bound to change. As her father no longer had affection for her mother, he became indifferent and cruel.
Daisy had decided not to fall in love with any man since she realized the harsh truth. As long as she didn't love others, she would have the strongest weapon to protect herself.
She didn't mind using her marriage to trade with Matt. Matt would help her take control of the Lainey family and drive away Karl and his mother, and she would give him whatever he wanted in return.
But Todd...
Daisy hesitated before she reached out to touch her heart. She felt like hearing her heart thumping.
She wondered why she became so excited. She had only thought of his name. Did she fall in love with him?
Her long and curly eyelashes drooped, covering the panic and confusion in her eyes.
She didn't know what to do.
She thought, 'Can I believe Todd?'
...
After getting off work, Ann went to the kindergarten to pick up Nikki. When she got home, she saw Daisy's car downstairs.
Daisy had been involved in a car accident before. There was something wrong with the other party's car. With Todd's lawyer team, the matter was settled soon.
As the other party had paid Daisy for her loss, Daisy bought a new car.
Ann walked closer and saw Daisy leaning against the driving seat in a daze. With her eyes confused, Daisy seemed to be lost in thoughts.
Ann reached out to knock on the window. Then, she called Daisy by her name.
Daisy came back to her senses and turned around to see Ann. Beside Ann was Nikki, who tried hard to raise her head.
As soon as Daisy turned around, Nikki narrowed her pretty big eyes and wore a smile on her face.
She greeted Daisy happily.
Her voice was sweet and soft.
Daisy stroked her little head and then looked up at Ann.
"Where are the other two children?"
"Phillip's family wanted to see them, so they went to the Moore's."
In fact, the Moore family had wanted to see Nikki as well. Ann was worried, so she didn't agree.
Carson and Jackson had grown up in the Moore's, and no one dared to bully them. However, Nikki was different.
Ann hadn't been clear about how the Moore family viewed Nikki yet. Nikki was innocent. What if she accidentally said something wrong? Ann feared that she would be hurt in the Moore's.
Daisy understood Ann. Therefore, Daisy didn't ask further. She looked down at Nikki's tender and adorable face and put on a smile.
"Nikki, let's eat out, okay? What do you want to eat?"
Nikki's eyes brightened. Then, she seemed to think of something and looked up at Ann with her lips pursed.
What Ann and Phillip had said occurred to her mind. She couldn't go out without their permission.
Ann could tell that Daisy was occupied. That probably was why she came over. Considering for a while, Ann pinched Nikki's face.
She asked, "Daisy invited you out to eat delicious food. What should you say?"
In an instant, Nikki clapped her hands with glee. She stared at Daisy and said, "Thank you. You are the most beautiful woman in the world."
As Ann carried Nikki into the car, Daisy made a joke.
"Don't you need to tell Phillip about it?"
In Daisy's mind, Phillip cared about where Ann was all the time.
"He's working overtime today." Ann was a little embarrassed.
Daisy raised her eyebrows and did not say anything else. She drove the car away.
The three of them did not go far away. They went to a restaurant in the mall not far from Ann's apartment.
Coincidentally, the restaurant had a promotional event. The waiter found Nikki adorable and gave her a cat headdress. With the headdress, Nikki looked even more lovely and drew a lot of attention.
Ann took food for Nikki and cleaned Nikki's face with tissues from time to time. The atmosphere between them was warm. Daisy fixed her eyes on Ann's delicate side face and suddenly spoke.
"Ann, are you happy now?"
Ann was shocked when she heard Daisy's question.
She put the food into Nikki's bowl. After that, she looked up at Daisy and was surprised at the latter's expression. It was rare for Daisy to have such a look of envy.
Ann pursed her lips and thought for a moment, saying, "Daisy, there are many definitions of happiness. Everyone's happiness is different. Some people just want their family to be safe, or their career to succeed, or their lives to be smooth..."
"I'm satisfied as I can be with Phillip and find the child that I thought I would never see. I'm happy."
Ann looked at Daisy seriously. "Daisy, whether a person is happy or not depends on what he or she wants."
Daisy's eyes trembled. What did she want?
Sometimes she felt that she didn't want anything, while sometimes she felt that she wanted too much.
When she was a child, she hoped to have a happy family. Later, she hoped to stay away from her father. Now, she wanted to protect her mother from being bullied and wanted a person who loved her sincerely.
Of course, she knew that she needed to pay sincerely if she wanted someone else to love her wholeheartedly. However, she was afraid that she would repeat her mother's miserable life. She didn't want to end up like her mother.
After they finished the meal, Nikki noticed a clip doll machine next to the mall and looked at Ann with eager eyes.
"Mommy, I want that doll!"
Ann looked over and let out a sigh.
"Nikki, don't you remember what happened last time? We tried lots of times, but we did not get even one doll."
It was a huge clip doll machine. The owner of the mall used this kind of machine to attract customers. In general, few people could succeed in getting a doll from it. Ann would rather go to buy a doll from the store.
Nikki pouted her lips and stared at Ann pitifully.
"Well, let's try a few more times. Maybe we'll succeed."
Ann didn't want to upset Nikki. She had no way but to exchange game coins and then helped Nikki get the doll she liked.
As expected, the doll remained motionless after they used dozens of coins. Ann and Nikki felt like they were almost there every time they failed.
Nikki was so aggrieved that her little face wrinkled. She looked down at the last few game coins in her hand and turned to stare at Daisy.
"Daisy, do you want to give it a try?"
