Chapter 84 Chapter 84
CHAPTER EIGHTY-FOUR
Dimitri
I looked around the NICU at every face.
Nurses, doctors, staff members, all of them looked nervous.
One of them was a traitor.
One of them had tried to kill my son.
"Listen carefully," I said, my voice was cold and deadly. "I will ask this once and only once."
Everyone was silent.
"Who tampered with my son's IV?" I demanded.
No one spoke.
"I said who did it!" I roared.
The staff flinched but still no one answered.
"Boss," one of my guards said. "We should check the security cameras."
"Do it," I ordered. "Now."
He left quickly.
I turned back to the medical staff. "Until we find out who did this, no one touches my son," I said. "Only the head doctor."
The head doctor nodded nervously. "We will do everything we can to save him," he promised.
I watched through the glass as they worked on my tiny son.
He looked so helpless, and fragile. Machines were doing the breathing for him.
"Please fight," I whispered. "Please stay strong."
My guard returned with a tablet.
"Boss, I have the footage," he said.
I grabbed the tablet and watched the screen.
The video showed a nurse entering the NICU. She walked directly to my son's incubator. She looked around nervously then pulled something from her pocket.
A syringe.
She injected it into the IV line then quickly left.
"That is her," I said. "Find her now."
"Already on it boss," my guard replied. "We have her photo, we are searching the hospital."
"She will not get far," I said.
I looked back at Irina, she was crying silently in her wheelchair.
I walked over and knelt beside her. "He will be okay," I said. "I promise."
"How can you promise that?" She asked. "He is so small, and weak."
"Because he is a fighter," I replied. "Like his mother."
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
"I cannot lose him Dimitri," she said. "I cannot."
"You will not," I said firmly. "I will not let that happen."
My phone buzzed, it was a text from my guard.
"We found her. She is trying to leave through the parking garage."
"Stay with Irina," I told another guard. "Do not let anyone near her or the baby."
"Yes boss," he replied.
I ran out of the NICU and headed to the parking garage.
When I got there I saw the nurse running towards a car.
"Stop!" I shouted.
She looked back and her face went pale.
She tried to run faster but my men caught her.
They grabbed her arms and dragged her towards me.
"Let me go!" She screamed. "I did not do anything!"
"Really?" I said coldly. "Then why are you running?"
She did not answer.
I grabbed her chin and forced her to look at me.
"Who paid you?" I demanded. "Was it Katya Orlov?"
"I do not know what you are talking about," she said.
"Do not lie to me!" I shouted.
I pulled out my gun and pressed it against her head.
"Tell me the truth or I will blow your brains out right here," I threatened.
"Okay okay!" She cried. "Yes, it was Katya!"
"What did she pay you?" I asked.
"Five hundred thousand rubles," the nurse admitted. "She said I just had to inject the baby with something."
"What was in the syringe?" I demanded.
"I do not know," she said. "She did not tell me."
I felt rage explode inside me. This woman had tried to kill an innocent baby for money.
"You are a monster," I said quietly.
"Please," she begged. "I have children of my own, I needed the money."
"You have children?" I repeated. "And you tried to kill mine?"
I lowered the gun and looked at my men.
"Take her to the basement," I ordered. "Lock her up."
"What are you going to do to me?" She asked fearfully.
"That depends," I said coldly.
My men dragged her away screaming.
I went back to the NICU.
When I arrived the doctors looked relieved.
"Mr Volkov," the head doctor said. "Your son is stabilizing."
Relief flooded through me.
"He is going to be okay?" I asked.
"We managed to flush the substance from his system," the doctor explained. "His vitals are improving."
I looked through the glass at my son.
He was still so tiny but he was fighting.
"Thank you," I said to the doctor. "Thank you so much."
I went back to Irina and told her the news.
She broke down crying but this time they were tears of relief.
"He is okay," she whispered. "Our baby is okay."
"Yes," I said. "He is going to be fine."
We sat there together watching our son through the glass.
Hours passed and his condition continued to improve.
Finally the doctors said we could touch him again.
Irina reached through the opening and held his tiny hand.
"Mama is here," she whispered. "Mama is always here."
The baby seemed to respond to her voice.
His little fingers gripped hers tightly.
"He knows you," I said.
"Of course he does," Irina replied with a small smile.
My phone rang, it was Sergei.
"Dimitri," he said. "We have a situation."
"What now?" I asked tiredly.
"It is about Mikhail," Sergei said. "Marina could be telling the truth."
My stomach dropped.
I had messaged Sergei to do the instigation for me. Because I was busy staying with Irirna and our son. And I had prayed silently that he wasn't the one.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Mikhail had ordered poison around that time. It was the same as the one found in Alexei’s system." Sergei explained.
"Why would he do that?" I demanded, disappointed and angry.
"I have no idea." Sergei said.
I let out a sigh.
Mikhail had poisoned his own godson. And then he had let Irina take the blame.
"Where is Mikhail now?" I asked.
"Sources said he was last seen driving out of Viktor Orlov’s estate." Sergei replied.
"What?" I asked.
"He might have gone to form an alliance with him." Sergei said.
My blood ran cold.
"What?" I asked.
Sergei was quiet for a while. “You might have to go to war with your godfather.”
I looked at Irina and our son. They were finally safe.
And now I had to go to war.
With my own godfather.
"I need your help Sergei," I said. "I cannot do this alone."
"You have it," Sergei promised. "My men are yours."
"Thank you," I said.
I hung up and turned to Irina.
She had heard everything.
"You have to go," she said quietly.
"I do not want to leave you," I replied.
"I know," she said. "But you have to end this."
"What if something happens to me?" I asked. I couldn't hide my fears. Mikhail was powerful. He was second in line after my father. He had Moscow wrapped around his finger tips.
"Then our son will know his father was a hero," Irina said.
She reached up and touched my face.
"Go," she said.
I leaned down and kissed her gently.
"I love you," I whispered.
"I love you too," she replied. "Now go."
I stood up and called my men.
"Gather everyone," I ordered. "Prepare for war."
"Yes boss," they replied.
I took one last look at Irina and our son.
Then I walked out. But as I was leaving the hospital, someone grabbed my arm.
I turned quickly, ready to fight.
But it was Marina.
"Dimitri wait," she said urgently.
"What?" I asked.
"There is something else I need to tell you,"
she said.
"What is it?" I asked impatiently.
Marina looked around nervously.
Then she took a deep breath.
"Mikhail did not act alone when he poisoned Alexei," she said.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"He had help," Marina explained. "Someone really close to you."
My heart started racing.
"Who?" I demanded.
Marina looked at me with sad eyes.
"It was one of your most trusted guards," she said.
"Which one?" I asked.
Marina hesitated.
"Tell me!" I shouted, causing passing workers to glance at us.
She pulled out her phone and showed me a photo.
When I saw the face my world stopped.
It was Ivan, my head guard.
