Chapter 83 Chapter83
CHAPTER EIGHTY-THREE
Irina's POV
I woke up to the sound of voices arguing outside my room.
One voice was Dimitri's, the other was a woman's.
I tried to sit up but pain shot through my body.
I gasped and lay back down.
The door opened and Dimitri came in.
His face looked troubled.
"Who was that?" I asked.
"No one important," he said quickly. But I could tell he was lying.
"Dimitri," I said. "Do not lie to me."
He sighed and sat down beside me.
"That was Marina," he said. "Roberto's wife."
My heart sank. She had fought for me against her husband and I hadn't gotten a chance to thank her. "What did she want?" I asked.
Dimitri was quiet for a moment.
"She told me something," he said finally. "Something about Alexei's poisoning."
My heart started racing.
"What did she say?" I asked.
"She said she knows who really poisoned him," Dimitri replied.
"Who?" I demanded.
"She said it was Mikhail," Dimitri said quietly.
I felt like someone slapped me.
"Mikhail?" I repeated. "But why would he..."
"I do not know," Dimitri said. "But if it is true… then I was framed for nothing," I finished.
Dimitri nodded.
"What are you going to do?" I asked.
"I need to find proof," he said. "But first I need to make sure you and the baby are safe."
"How is he?" I asked. "Has there been any change?"
"He is stable," Dimitri replied.
"I want to see him again," I said.
"Later," Dimitri promised. "You need to rest first."
"I have been resting," I argued.
"You just had a major surgery," he reminded me.
I knew he was right but I missed my baby already.
"Can you at least check on him?" I asked.
"Of course," he said.
He left the room and I was alone with my thoughts.
Mikhail poisoned Alexei?
It did not make sense. Alexei was his godson.
Unless…
Unless Mikhail wanted me gone.
Maybe he never approved of me being with Dimitri.
But why would he risk his godson’s life?
The door opened again but it was not Dimitri.
It was a nurse with my medication.
"Time for your pain medicine," she said with a smile.
She prepared a syringe.
"What is that?" I asked nervously.
"Just morphine," she replied. "For the pain."
She injected it into my IV line.
Within seconds I started feeling drowsy.
"Rest now," the nurse said.
She left and I closed my eyes. But something felt wrong. The drowsiness was too strong and fast.
I tried to open my eyes but I could not.
I tried to call for help but my mouth would not work.
Was this normal? Or was something wrong?
I heard the door open again.
Footsteps approached my bed.
"Poor Irina," a voice said.
It was not Dimitri's voice. It was a woman's voice.
I knew that voice.
Katya.
"Did you really think you would get away?" Katya said. "Did you think you could have Dimitri and the baby?"
I tried to move but my body would not respond.
"That nurse was paid very well," Katya continued. "She gave you something special."
Poison, she had poisoned me.
"Do not worry," Katya said. "It will be quick."
I heard her footsteps walking away.
Then the door closed.
I was alone and dying.
I tried to scream but nothing came out.
I tried to move but I was paralyzed.
This was it, I was going to die.
And there was nothing I could do about it.
But then I heard the door open again.
"Irina?" Dimitri's voice said.
I could not respond. He must have sensed something was wrong.
He rushed to my side.
"Something is wrong," he said. "Nurse! I need help!"
Doctors and nurses rushed in.
"Her heart rate is dropping!" Someone shouted.
"Get the crash cart!" Another voice ordered.
I felt multiple hands on me.
"What did you give her?" A doctor demanded.
"Just morphine," a nurse replied.
"This is not morphine," the doctor said. "This is something else!"
"We need to pump her stomach now!" Someone ordered.
Everything was chaotic.
I could hear Dimitri shouting.
"Save her! Please save her!"
Then everything started fading. The voices became distant. The sounds became muffled.
Was this death? Was I dying?
I thought about my baby, my tiny boy. I would never see him grow up. I would never hold him properly. I would never hear him call me mama.
Tears fell from my closed eyes.
I am sorry.
Then suddenly I felt a shock. Electricity gushing through my body.
Once, twice, three times.
"We have a pulse!" Someone shouted.
"She is back!" Another voice said.
Slowly the darkness started lifting.
I could hear clearly again. I could feel things again. I tried to open my eyes.
"Irina," Dimitri's voice said. "Irina can you hear me?"
I managed to open my eyes slightly.
His face came into view.
He was crying.
"You are okay," he said. "You are going to be okay."
I tried to speak but my throat hurt.
"Do not talk," Dimitri said. "Just rest."
A doctor appeared beside him.
"Mrs Volkov you are very lucky," the doctor said. "Someone tried to poison you."
"But we caught it in time," he continued. "You will recover."
Dimitri looked furious.
"Who did this?" He demanded.
"The nurse who gave her the injection is gone," a security guard said. "She disappeared."
"Find her!" Dimitri roared. "Find her now!"
But I knew who was behind it.
I tried to speak again.
"Ka...Katya," I managed to whisper.
Dimitri leaned closer. "What?" He asked.
"Katya," I said louder. "She was here."
Dimitri's face went dark with rage.
"She tried to kill you," he said.
I nodded weakly.
"That is it," Dimitri said standing up. "This ends now."
He pulled out his phone and made a call.
"Sergei?" He said. "I need you to do something for me."
He walked to the corner of the room but I could still hear him.
"Find Katya Orlov," he ordered. "And bring her to me."
"Alive?" Sergei asked on the other end.
"I do not care," Dimitri replied coldly.
He hung up and came back to my side.
"No one will hurt you again," he promised. "I swear it."
But then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen and his face went pale.
"What is it?" I asked weakly.
He answered the call. "What?" He said. "When?"
He listened and his expression became more horrified.
"I will be right there," he said.
He hung up and looked at me with terrified eyes.
"What happened?" I asked.
"It's the baby," he said.
My heart stopped.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"His oxygen levels are dropping," Dimitri said. "The doctors do not know why."
"No," I whispered. "No no no."
"I need to go to him," Dimitri said.
"Take me with you," I begged.
"You cannot move yet," he said.
"I do not care!" I shouted. "That is my son!"
Dimitri hesitated then nodded.
He helped me into a wheelchair carefully. We rushed to the NICU as fast as we could.
When we got there doctors were surrounding his incubator. Alarms were beeping frantically.
"What is happening?" Dimitri demanded.
"We do not know," a doctor replied. "His vitals just started crashing."
I watched in horror as they worked on my tiny baby.
"Please," I whispered. "Please save him."
But then one of the doctors noticed something.
"Wait," he said. "Look at this."
He pointed at his IV line.
"T
his is not saline," he said.
My blood ran cold.
Someone had tampered with my baby’s IV.
Someone was trying to kill my son!
Tears streamed down my face.
"Who had access to this?" Dimitri roared.
The nurses looked at each other nervously.
"Only medical staff," one said.
"Then one of them is working for Katya," Dimitri said.
He looked around the room at everyone.
"No one leaves," he ordered, his voice cold. "No one."
His men appeared immediately and blocked all the exits.
"One of you tried to kill my son," Dimitri said coldly.
His voice was deadly calm.
"And I will find out who.”
