Chapter 88 Scarlett's Heart Fluttering
Chapter 88: A Virtuous Lady!
"Since that's the case, you're aware of the situation with Red Resort?" Asher said with a bitter chuckle.
"Hmm," Scarlett nodded, glancing at him. She noticed him pull a beer from under his feet and shot him an annoyed look. She was worried about him, and yet he seemed unfazed, as if everything was fine.
"Do you realize how much danger you're in right now?" she asked, her tone tinged with frustration.
"I know, but what good does worrying do? We need to eat, drink, and stay alert. Worrying just makes us drowsy when we need to be sharp," Asher replied, pouring more wine into Scarlett's cup and taking a sip.
Scarlett paused, considering his words. Worry could indeed be counterproductive, and she admired Asher's perspective.
She bit her lip, looking at Asher sideways before offering, "Maybe I can help you."
"Really? What can you do?" Asher's voice carried a rare seriousness.
Scarlett was known for her integrity and kindness, and she rarely joked. Asher believed she had a purpose for inviting him over.
"My sister is quite capable. She's every bit as competent as you. I'll have her protect you," Scarlett said directly.
"Isabella?" Asher was surprised, picturing the elegant policewoman. He shook his head. "I trust your sister, but Red Resort is dangerous. I can't let her take that risk. What if something happened to her?"
"Besides, she might not agree. She seems to have a low opinion of me," he added with a wry smile.
"No worries, I can negotiate with Jiajia. I'm sure she'll agree," Scarlett insisted.
"Negotiate?" Asher hesitated, giving Scarlett a puzzled look. The twin sisters were indeed unique.
"You don't know her. She expects something in return for her help," Scarlett explained with a faint smile and a helpless expression.
"As I said, I appreciate it, but I can't let her take any risks," Asher repeated, smiling politely. "And I might not be in danger after all."
He had his doubts about Isabella's reliability. She might be competent, but he felt she was unpredictable.
"So, you're just going to go? What if there's real danger?" Scarlett pressed.
"I've always been lucky," Asher reassured her, changing the subject. "By the way, I need to buy a gift from you for someone else."
Scarlett knew she couldn't convince him, so she asked about the gift. She was a professional, prepared to cater to any client's needs.
"It's for the vice president of my company. She's been a great help. Tomorrow's her birthday, and I want to give her something nice," Asher said.
"And your relationship?" Scarlett probed, blushing slightly.
"Nothing close," Asher laughed.
Scarlett admired Asher's thoughtfulness. "Perhaps a valuable and meaningful gift, like a piece of famous art or calligraphy?" she suggested.
"That won't do," Asher said decisively. He doubted Stella would appreciate something so scholarly.
"Do you have something tangible? Maybe a pendant or a jade piece that's clearly valuable?" Asher asked.
"One moment," Scarlett sighed and rose gracefully to retrieve a wooden box. It was a sizeable box, exquisitely crafted, and clearly contained her personal treasures.
Scarlett unlocked the box, revealing a collection of precious items. She was reluctant to part with any, but offered, "Choose one, but only one."
Asher's gaze lingered on the jade beads and golden scallop shells, but he was drawn to a jade bracelet in the second layer. Recognizing it, he asked about its origin.
Scarlett explained she was holding it for someone who would redeem it later.
"I'll take this one," Asher decided.
Scarlett agreed, though reluctantly. She had just acquired the bracelet and hadn't had time to enjoy it, but she couldn't deny Asher's claim.
Asher, feeling guilty, asked for another item. Under Scarlett's intense gaze, he settled on a jade bracelet worth $400,000, knowing Stella would like it.
He also accepted a talisman from Scarlett, a bead on a red string, hoping it would bring him luck.
"Thank you, Scarlett. If I don't come back, don't wait for me. Find a good family to marry," Asher said half-jokingly as he stood up.
Scarlett, expressionless, stored away her qin and refused to engage further. His suggestion that she marry someone else had irked her. Why would she wait for a married man who flirts so openly?
