Chapter 216 216
Chapter 216 216
The night was heavy with silence, the kind that presses against the windows and hums through the veins. Chloe sat on the edge of the couch, her phone screen glowing with headlines she could barely look at anymore.
Each post carried her name, twisted, defamed, and torn apart in the comments.
Lucius stood by the window, hands tucked in his coat pockets, his dark eyes reflecting the city lights below.
"You can't ignore this anymore," he said finally. His voice was quiet but cold, like steel wrapped in velvet. "They've crossed a line."
Chloe rubbed her temples, exhaustion weighing on her. "I know. But every time I fight back, it looks like I'm desperate. Like I'm just proving them right."
Lucius turned, walking toward her. "Then don't fight back like Chloe," he said. "Fight back as Valerius would."
Her eyes flicked up sharply. "You mean... ruthless?"
A faint smirk curved his lips. "I mean smart. Strategic. Let them think they're winning while we build the knife that will slit their throat."
Chloe stared at him, uncertain whether to be afraid or impressed. "And what exactly do you suggest, Lucius?"
He took a seat opposite her, resting his elbows on his knees. "First, we cut off Alexa's new alliance with Clarisse Delacroix. Without funding, her new product dies before launch. Clarisse is vain, she only stands beside winners. If we leak information that Chloe Luxe is about to collaborate with an international investor..."
"Which we're not," Chloe interrupted.
Lucius arched an eyebrow. "We can make her believe we are."
The thought made her pulse quicken. "You want to fake an investor deal?"
"I want to make them panic," he replied smoothly. "When people panic, they make mistakes. We'll use those mistakes to destroy them publicly, elegantly."
Chloe leaned back, the spark of old confidence flickering in her chest. "And what happens when they find out it's fake?"
Lucius smiled faintly. "By then, it won't matter. You'll already have won."
For the first time in days, Chloe felt something close to control. Her mind sharpened as she stood, pacing slowly. "Okay," she said. "We'll need a press leak. Something subtle. Maybe a whisper to Ethereal Business Weekly. They love exclusives."
Lucius nodded approvingly. "I'll handle the logistics. You handle the performance. Post something confident, something that looks like you're too busy succeeding to care about gossip."
Chloe picked up her phone, already scrolling. "Like a picture of me at the lab with the new Luxe serum prototypes?"
He smirked. "Exactly. Let the world see that the queen hasn't fallen, she's simply planning her next move."
Chloe snapped the photo, the camera catching her reflection, polished, unbroken. When she hit post, her caption read:
A little silence before the storm. New beginnings, new alliances.
Within minutes, her notifications exploded.
Lucius watched from across the room, eyes glinting. "That's my girl," he murmured.
Chloe turned toward him. "Don't get used to calling me that," she said, but her lips twitched with the ghost of a smile.
He stepped closer. "Oh, I intend to."
Their eyes met, the tension between revenge and something dangerously intimate tightening in the air. For a moment, neither spoke. The city below seemed to hold its breath with them.
Then Chloe broke the silence. "What's next?"
Lucius's smile deepened. "Next," he said, "we make Alexa and Clarisse believe their empire is about to crumble. And when they come crawling to you for mercy..." He leaned closer, his breath brushing her ear. "You decide if they deserve it."
Chloe's heart beat faster not from fear this time, but from purpose. "Good," she said. "Let's begin."
Lucius's smirk turned sharp. "Already did."
He handed her a tablet, revealing a draft headline already circulating on an anonymous blog:
Rumor: International investor eyes partnership with Chloe Luxe after rejecting Delacroix Cosmetics.
Chloe stared at it, shock mixing with admiration. "You work fast."
Lucius looked down at her. "For you," he said softly, "always."
His eyes locked on hers, the glow of the city reflecting between them like firelight trapped in glass. For a long moment, neither spoke. Only the quiet hum of the room, the faint pulse of something dangerous, desire mixed with defiance.
He stepped closer, slow, deliberate.
Chloe didn't move. Her breath hitched when his hand brushed the side of her jaw, barely a touch, but enough to set every nerve on fire.
"Lucius..." she whispered, her voice trembling.
"Don't," he murmured, eyes dark and steady. "If you say my name like that again, I won't stop."
Her heart hammered in her chest. For a second, the world shrank, no scandal, no rivals, no Alexa only him. His breath was warm against her lips, so close she could taste the danger of it.
They were inches apart now. The air was thick with tension, heavy with something neither of them wanted to name.
Chloe's eyes fluttered shut... And then the door burst open.
"Chloe...!"
Angela's voice cracked through the room.
Both of them froze.
Angela stood in the doorway, her hair disheveled, her eyes red and swollen from crying. She took one look at them at her daughter and at Lucius, standing far too close and the blood drained from her face.
Her voice came out broken, almost a whisper: "Chloe... what are you doing?"
Lucius straightened instantly, the mask of calm sliding back into place. But Chloe... she couldn't even breathe. The realization hit like ice.
Angela's trembling hand went to her mouth as tears welled again. "My God," she whispered. "You were about to kiss him... your man's twin brother."
The room went deathly still.
Lucius's eyes flicked to Chloe, unreadable, cold while Chloe stood frozen in shame and shock, unable to find words.
Angela turned away, her voice breaking as she whispered, "I can't believe this?"
