Chapter 26: More like brother-in-law

Evans felt like his heart had been stabbed with a knife, he knew he shouldn't be expecting more but when he heard Nathan define their relationship in that way, it still caused him so much discomfort.

Gulping, his eyes met with Megan’s and he could see the teasings in them. He could understand what she meant by that look in her eyes but he chooses to ignore it.

“Oh… brothers?” Megan asked, giggling sarcastically with raised brows as she continued, “Or brother-in-law?”

Stiffening from shock, Evans glared at her with warnings, his eyes threatening her to say one more word which made her roll her eyes but what she didn't know was how much her reminder had hurt Evans.

He had been trying to ignore their situation, forgetting that no matter how mushy he and Nathan were, he still had his brother in his heart and he, Evans, was no more than a substitute.

“It doesn't matter! Evans wouldn't be staying here to take care of you, don't be selfish!” Nathan responded, his voice filled with coldness.

“Enough, Nathan!”

Turning to look at Evans in surprise, Nathan couldn't understand why he had stopped him. He raised his eyebrow at Evans' pale face and reached out his hand to hold him, but Evans moved away from him leaving his hand hanging awkwardly in the air.

“What do you mean by this?” Nathan asked, irritation clear in his voice.

“We were fine just now, so why is he acting this way all of a sudden?”He thought to himself but his face still maintained that calm look.

Evans inhaled deeply, his fingers pinching his palm in nervousness, then without looking at him, he spat out, “I will stay here to take care of her. You don't need to worry about me.”

Nathan's eyes grew cold when he heard his words, fixing his eyes on him and waiting for him to change his words but seeing the determination in him, he knew the little guy was serious. He glared at him coldly, his eyes piercing, but then turned indifferent as his lips curled up in a little smile then without saying anything, he walked out.

Staring at the man’s cold and arrogant back as he walked away, Evans couldn't help but feel uneasy and even had the urge to call him back, but then, Megan’s voice distracted him.

“Thank you for staying, Evans. And…I am sorry for this.” She said, her voice sad and filled with self blame.

How could Evans blame her when he saw how sad she was? Besides, she had injured herself to save him even if they could have avoided any accident, but it's the thoughts that mattered, right?

So he smiled gently then shook his head, “Its what I have to do, Meg. You just have to take care of yourself.” He said.

Two days passed and Nathan still hadn't seen or talked with Evans since the day of the accident.

Sitting inside his office with jaw clenched in a tight frown and hands working fast as he signed on the documents that needed his signature, Nathan appeared calm but only he knew how frustrated he was and how he had been trying to distract himself with work.

“Darn it! That heartless brat!”  He scolded by throwing the pen in his hand on the table.

Just remembering how Evans had disregarded him filled him with anger, and even he doesn't know why he was this angry. He had only been with Evans for a while and he knew clearly that what he was feeling was purely Lust and nothing else, so why was he angry?

“It doesn't matter! How dare that boy disobey me?! He didn't even try calling me, has he forgotten the contract he had signed?! Darm it!” He cursed in frustration, then picked up his phone, wanting to remind the brat of who the master is but then, his eyes got attracted to his phone wallpaper.

He stared dazedly at the smiling face on the wallpaper and his heart clenched with pain. His hand which was holding the phone clenched in a tight grip.

“Jesse..”He muttered, his head blurring with the memory of how the picture came to be,  he couldn't help but let out a soft smile, but then, it dropped immediately.

“Where did it go wrong?” He muttered to himself, slamming his phone on the table then standing up with a pack of cigarettes in his hand and his lighter in the other.

Standing in front of the large window, he stared out, his eyes dazed and cold as a ring of smoke blurred his face making him look mysterious and elegant.

Evans had been a distraction from his pain but once he remembered his lover who is said to have run away with someone else, the pain came rushing back.

His heart felt painful and his head felt heavy with so many memories.

He could deny it all he wanted, but he cared about this. He still worries about this issue no matter how he tries to avoid it.

No one knows what Jesse meant to him, not even Jesse himself. He raised the cigar stick to his face, his eyes staring deeply at it, his thought chaotic, then as if he had made a huge decision, he turned around and walked back to his table then picked up his phone.

He punched in his assistant's number, and when it was answered, he spat out orders that baffled even the assistant on the other end.

“I want information on what…Jesse is on, right now!” Then he hung up.

The assistant felt like his boss had gone crazy. Why involve himself with a stupid and ungrateful person like Jesse? Besides, he had thought he was involved with Jesse’s brother?

“Well, I just have to do what I am asked to do without questioning.” He muttered to himself then went ahead to do his task, calling their informant to check on Jesse.

Some minutes passed when Nathan, who had calmed down after a smoke break, ordered the person knocking to come in.

He didn't bother raising his head as he continued reading the document, his brows furrowed like he had found something that didn't tally.

“President, I got the information about Mr. Jesse.” The assistant said.

Nathan's hands stiffened, his hold on the papers tightened but he continued acting indifferent as he signaled him to speak.

The assistant frowned recalling the information he had gotten, he appeared baffled, “Sir, we found out something baffling. Mr.Jesse seems to be attending so many events which is strange.”

Nathan raised his head in confusion, he didn't understand what his assistant meant by strange. “What is strange about that? Jesse is a pianist.”

The assistant frowned, “But, he is appearing frequently, even in low-class ones, and he seems to be doing it because of money!”

“What?!”
