Chapter 25: Compensation

Sitting outside nervously was Evans who was still filled with guilt and didn't know his best friend was trying to deceive him but with Nathan’s hands patting his back and telling him everything will be alright, his heart calmed down.

The sound of the room where Megan was pushed into opened and Megan was pushed out. Everyone rushed towards her except Nathan who was watching them with a somewhat indifferent look. Megan wasn't related to him in any way, and he was only here because of Evans.

With hands in his pockets, he watched as they surrounded her, asking about her well-being, but then suddenly her eyes met with his and he could see her shock which made him creased his brows.

Nathan and Megan’s eyes met in the air, and though Nathan’s eyes were still indifferent without any thoughts, Megan was different.

She felt shocked to see him standing there, and then annoyance filled her heart at his indifference. She smirked secretly then turned to the worried Evans whom her parents had pushed aside, she stretched her hand towards him slowly signaling him to move towards her which Evans did immediately.

“How are you doing? Is it so serious? Don't worry, I will ask the doctor about it, I promise you will be better, okay?” He asked without even taking a breath.

“Evans, I—”

“What do you mean by that word? We watched the video and saw that my daughter got injured because of you. She was trying to save you, are you trying to deviate and not compensate her?!” Megan’s mother interrupted her as she was about to say something.

At first, Megan felt dissatisfied at being interrupted, but when she heard the words her mother said, she kept quiet and acted helpless while throwing a look of apology to Evans whose brows were furrowed uncomfortably.

“This is better. Never knew my mother would help me this way. As long as I make him feel guilty, he will stay with me, right?” Megan asked herself, her heart beating so fast in anticipation of her plan, but then, a cold voice sounded in the hall interrupting the intense moment.

“Madam, I think you're getting something wrong here.” Nathan walked toward them after listening to Megan’s mother's accusations. He felt vexed hearing her speak to Evans in that manner and if it was not because he didn't want Evans to feel more guilt, he would have had her thrown out or better still take Evans away from here.

Taking Evans’ hand in his, he pulled him to his side, covering him with his body, then he threw Megan a look before focusing back on her mother so he didn't see the hatred in Megan’s eyes as she looked at their attached hands.

“I also watched the video and saw clearly that Evans could have avoided the bike swiftly and there wouldn't be any problem at all, but who asked your daughter to want to be the hero, pushing him away and standing in front of the bike? So why put all the blame on Evans?!” Nathan asked, his cold aura spreading across the room, making one bow in respect to him.

Megan’s mother stiffened, her eyes going back and forth in speechlessness. To be honest, she had also watched the video while they were waiting and she was also confused why her daughter had jumped in front of the bike, but still…

“I only had the thought of saving my best friend at that moment, and I only reacted in times of danger without thinking much. Mr Nathan, stop putting it in a way that makes it sound vicious! Besides, I never blamed Evans!” Megan immediately jumped into the conversation.

She sneaked a peek at Evans to see his reaction, her heart was beating so fast at the thought that he would doubt her but unfortunately, Nathan’s body was covering him totally and she couldn't even see his face. This annoyed her so much that she wished she could kill Nathan.

“How dare he accuse her in front of Evans?! He is so vicious! He must be trying to make Evans doubt and hate me. Yes! That's it! But I wouldn't let him succeed, I wouldn't!” Megan thought, her fist secretly clenching in anger but her face still maintained that sad look.

“Yes, exactly! Why are you trying to paint righteous acts as evil? Is it wrong that my daughter did good to him?!” Her mother butt him, her voice firm and protective.

Nathan chuckled and was about to say something, but a pull stopped him. He looked back and saw Evans shaking his head at him, then he chewed his inside cheeks, walking out from his coverage then bowing to Megan’s mother.

“I’m at fault here, Aunty. Megan saved me and it's truly my responsibility to compensate her even if we are friends. Tell me what you want, aunty.” Evans said in a soft voice, his face sincere and filled with apology and guilt as he looked at Megan’s injured leg from the corner of his eye.

Nathan frowned in dissatisfaction but he said nothing and allowed him to handle it.

Megan’s mother sighed softly, then said, “It's not like Aunty is wicked, but you know Megan is our only daughter and the apple of our family’s eyes, Evans. And that is why I reacted badly. Aunty knows you mean no harm. And also, do you think we need anything from you? We don't lack anything, child.”

Evans smiled awkwardly at her friendiness, he just couldn't get used to it after her fierce outburst just minutes ago, but he still acted calmly and friendly asking in confusion, “Then, Aunty, what can I do then?”

“Of course, you can stay with Megan in the hospital to take care of her. We don't need money or anything, but for you to stay with her while she recovers from the injury. You know both I and her father are always busy and since you both are close friends then I can trust you with that!” She said then nodded like she had made a good decision.

Megan felt her heart leap in joy when she heard her mother’s suggestion. She turned to look at Evans in anticipation and how could Evans reject their suggestion with her looking at him that way, so he opened his mouth to respond but he was interrupted.

“No! He wouldn't be staying here with her! We can hire a nurse but not him!” Nathan’s decisive voice sounded in the hall shocking everyone including Evans who turned to look at him in suprise.

Megan felt so angry, she clenched her fist hard and shouted, “What business do you have with Evans?! Why can't he make his own decision and who are you to make a decision for him?!”

“Of course, I’m his brother!”

Evans stiffened.
