Chapter 27: Distracted and Revelation
Evans sat next to the bed washing and cutting apples for Megan to eat, but Megan who sat up with her leg, furrowed her brows in worry as she noticed Evans had been too quiet and their conversation had been too stiff in the past two days when they had been alone.
She licked her lips and lowered her head as irritation flashed through her eyes but immediately she saw the apple which was stretched towards her, Her face bloomed in a bright smile as she immediately took it from him while raising her head to thank him but what she saw shocked her into throwing away the apple and scrambling near him to grab his bloody fingers.
“How did this happen? I told you not to do all this!”
“— I'm sorry…” Evans panicked as he watched her clean his hand with her cloth. He felt so embarrassed for making such a low mistake.
He sighed helplessly, then pulled his finger away from her hand and stood up to wash his hands in the bathroom. As he walked back to the ward, he was surprised to see Megan standing on her feet with her injured leg raised while her body rested on the wall with her eyes fixed on the view outside her window.
His brows furrowed as he rushed towards her with a deep concern on his face, “Why are you standing there? What if you get injured again?” he asked.
Megan, whom he was talking to, remained silent and didn't budge no matter how much he moved her and that was when he noticed there was something wrong with her.
He pursed his lips in deep thought, “Megan…?”
Megan’s face turned pale at his call, her eyes shook and a timid emotion flashed through her eyes, but then she still decided to ask the question that had been bothering her.
“Do you want to go see him?” she asked and without turning around, she knew he would be shocked at her question, truly Evans was surprised, and then realisation appeared in his face as he immediately knew who she was talking about.
Evans couldn't help feeling awkward as he knew she had noticed he had been distracted and the only person who was capable of that was Nathan.
He sighed softly, “Let's not talk about that, Megan.” he said, turning around to go bring her walking stick, but then her call stopped him.
He turned around to look at her but when he saw the smile on her face, he felt something was off and truly, he was right.
Megan raised her lips shallowly, then suddenly stripped the bandages wrapped around her legs until her legs were without any which scared Evans as he rushed toward her to stop her strange act but he paused as he got a view of her leg.
His lips twitched, not in joy but in confusion and suspicion, “What do you mean?” He asked her.
Megan shrugged her shoulders, then without looking at him turned to limp back to her bed.
“What do you think it is?” she asked, then looked straight at him, “Yes! I lied to you all! I told the doctor to put more bandages, yes, my injuries weren't that bad, and also..” She stopped, pointed at his fingers with a sarcastic smile on her lips, “You can stop getting distracted and go meet your man. I’m sorry if I’ve been holding you back from seeing him. You can leave now.”
At first, he had felt his blood boil in anger as he listened to her, but as he looked at her back which she had turned towards him, he couldn't help but soften up.
He couldn't understand why things had gone this badly. They were cool before but all of a sudden, she began acting strangely.
“Megan..?” He walked to stand in front of her as he talked.
“You're becoming strange and weird. What achievement do you get in making everybody worried, including your parents? Your mother runs around every day in fear that you would be sad and bored or that your legs might not get better, but here you are, playing nasty games with us. Do you enjoy seeing the world in panic?!”
Megan stiffened, her guilt turned to anger as she gritted her teeth and without caring for her injured legs, she stood up while pointing her fingers at him with her eyes filled with blame.
“So what?! And who did I do all this for?! Since you had sex with that man, you will never treat me the same way again! You’ve been my best friend for years and because of you, I never had any friends just so I can be there for you if you need me but what about you?! Have you thought about me? Do you even give a fuck how I felt when you ignored me for days?!” She spat out words that she had been holding in her heart for a while.
“So what if I did this? Isn't it just to spend some alone time with you?! Why get angry?!”
Evans watched her speechlessly, he really wanted to say something, but then, only cold chuckles left his lips.
“I’ve never wronged you so is Nathan as he doesn't even know you. I have always treated you the best but it seems you take my friendship for nothing and you don't value this friendship. This is not a real friendship but a toxic one!” He frowned angrily after his words and without looking at her, picked up his coat and turned around to leave.
“But…Can't I even be jealous?”
Evans paused at her question, a helpless smile tugging at his lips but he managed to keep his cold look, then said without looking back—
“I’ll come check on you after you’ve calmed down, so we can talk about your deceit, again. For now…?”
“I don't want to see you as I’m afraid I might beat you up!” He said then walked away, but what he didn't see after he left was the bright and proud smile that appeared on Megan’s face.
