Chapter 46 The Trial and Trap (Thalia's POV)
The officiant's words blur together, meaningless sounds that wash over me without penetrating.
I'm standing at the altar beside Casimir, his hand cold against mine, watching the spot where Lucien disappeared through the doors. The mate bond is stretched thin, aching, screaming across the distance.
But I can still feel him. Still know he's alive.
That has to be enough.
"Do you, Thalia Thornewood," the officiant's voice pulls me back, "take Casimir Dragomir to be your lawfully wedded husband, to honor and obey… "
"Wait." Ravenna's voice cuts through the ceremony like a blade. "Before this proceeds further, there's a matter of pack law to address."
Casimir tenses beside me. "The ceremony is underway… "
"And pack law supersedes ceremony." She's on her feet now, power radiating from her in visible waves. "Lucien Voss has committed crimes that require immediate judgment."
"He's been exiled… " Casimir starts.
"Exile isn't sufficient." She's moving toward the altar now, other Voss wolves following. "Under ancient pack law, attempting to steal an Alpha's claimed mate is punishable by death."
The words hit like ice water.
"Lucien didn't steal… " I start.
"He seduced you." Ravenna cuts me off. "Got you pregnant. Conspired with you to defraud Casimir regarding succession. Those are capital crimes."
"The arrangement acknowledged the bond… "
"The arrangement was built on lies." She's relentless. "Casimir claimed you as potential mate. Lucien knew this and proceeded anyway. That's theft under pack law, regardless of mate bonds or political arrangements."
"That's not how it happened… " I'm desperate now.
"Then how did it happen?" She challenges. "Explain to all these witnesses how you and Lucien weren't conspiring to deceive Casimir."
I can't. Because we were conspiring, just not the way she's framing it. We were trying to navigate impossible circumstances, not steal mates or defraud succession.
But the truth is too complicated to explain in front of three hundred hostile wolves.
"Ravenna." Casimir's voice carries warning. "I've already determined Lucien's punishment. Exile is sufficient… "
"Exile allows him to live." She turns on him now. "To potentially return, to continue disrupting pack stability, to breed more Convergence offspring with other wolves. Is that what you want?"
"What I want is to proceed with my wedding… "
"What you need is to enforce pack law." Morrigan's voice joins Ravenna's. I turn to see my mother on her feet, expression harder than I've ever seen it. "If Lucien goes unpunished for this, it sets precedent that mate bonds override Alpha authority. Every future challenge to arranged marriages will cite this case."
"Mother… " I'm shocked she's agreeing with Ravenna.
"This isn't about you anymore, Thalia." She's not looking at me. "It's about maintaining order. Lucien conspired to defraud an Alpha. That crime requires consequences beyond simple exile."
"He's your future son-in-law… " I start stupidly.
"He's a criminal who got my daughter pregnant and then tried to use political manipulation to legitimize it." She's cold about it. "His punishment serves as warning to others who might try similar deception."
"Under ancient pack law," Ravenna addresses the full assembly now, "the penalty for stealing an Alpha's claimed mate is death. I invoke that law and demand Lucien Voss be executed for his crimes."
"Seconded." Morrigan's voice is ice. "For the good of pack stability and to prevent future disruptions."
"This is insane… " I'm screaming now. "You can't execute him for falling in love… "
"We're executing him for conspiracy and deception." Ravenna corrects. "The love is irrelevant. The crimes are clear."
I turn to Casimir desperately. "Tell them. Tell them the arrangement was deliberate, that you knew about everything… "
"I didn't know about the pregnancy." He meets my gaze, and I see the trap he's in. "Not when the contracts were signed."
It's technically true… we discussed pregnancy as likely outcome, not confirmed fact. He's using that technicality to maintain his lie while I watch everything collapse.
"Casimir, please… " I'm begging now. "You can't let them execute him. You know this is wrong… "
"What I know is that pack law exists for a reason." His voice is carefully neutral. "And while I believe exile is sufficient punishment, I'm not the only voice in this decision."
"You're the Alpha… "
"Of Dragomir pack." He interrupts. "But this assembly includes all three packs. Ravenna and Morrigan are speaking for their people. If I override them without cause, it creates political crisis."
"Without cause?" I'm incredulous. "The cause is Lucien doesn't deserve to die… "
"The cause would be admitting I knew about everything from the beginning." He says it too quietly for others to hear. "Which destroys my credibility and probably gets us both killed alongside him."
Understanding crashes through me. He's trapped by his own lie. If he defends Lucien now, he has to admit the arrangement was deliberate, that he knew about the pregnancy, that we were all conspiring together. That admission costs him everything… pack loyalty, political position, any chance of securing succession.
So he stays silent and lets Lucien die to save himself.
"You coward." I'm crying now, not caring who sees. "You're letting him be executed to save your reputation… "
"I'm letting pack law proceed to save both our lives." He's harsh about it. "If I admit the truth, Ravenna will demand both your executions for conspiracy. At least this way you survive."
"I don't want to survive without him… "
"Then you're a fool." He turns to address the assembly. "Given the serious nature of the charges, and the support from both Voss and Thornewood Alphas, I agree that pack law should be invoked. Lucien Voss will face trial for his crimes."
"No!" I'm moving toward the doors, toward where they took Lucien, but guards block my path.
"Trial is a formality." Ravenna's voice carries satisfaction. "The evidence is clear. He seduced Casimir's intended mate, got her pregnant, conspired to defraud succession. Those are capital crimes with only one penalty."
"When?" Morrigan asks.
"Tonight." Ravenna is absolute. "Before anyone can interfere or attempt rescue. Judgment at midnight, execution at dawn."
"That's not enough time for defense… " I'm fighting the guards now.
"Defense of what?" She turns on me. "He's admitted the bond. Admitted the pregnancy is his. Admitted to agreeing to the arrangement. There's nothing to defend."
"The circumstances… the coercion… the impossible choices… " I'm grasping at anything.
"Are irrelevant to pack law." She's implacable. "The crime is clear. The penalty is death."
"Casimir… " I turn back to him desperately. "Please. You have the power to stop this… "
"I have the power to create political crisis that gets us both killed." He's not looking at me. "Sometimes the only choice is terrible or more terrible. This is terrible. Revealing everything would be more terrible."
"For you… "
"For both of us." He's sharp now. "You think Ravenna will spare you if she learns you were conspiring from the beginning? You think Morrigan won't use forced bond dissolution and every other method to control you once the truth comes out? At least this way you survive, the child survives, and eventually you have the resources to… "
"To what?" I'm screaming. "To live with watching my mate be executed? To raise our child knowing I could have saved his father but didn't? To spend the rest of my life as your wife, knowing you chose politics over people?"
"Yes." He's absolute about it. "Because that's better than all three of you dying tonight."
"Take her." Ravenna gestures to the guards holding me. "Lock her somewhere secure until after the execution. Can't risk her attempting rescue or using Convergence power to interfere."
"No… " I'm fighting now, using strength beyond human, but there are six guards and they're prepared.
"Lucien!" I'm screaming his name. "Lucien, I'm sorry… "
His voice comes through the mate bond, distant but clear: Not your fault. I love you. Protect our child.
Then nothing. Like they've taken him somewhere beyond the bond's reach, or drugged him unconscious, or done something to sever our connection temporarily.
"LUCIEN!" I'm using command voice now, Convergence authority making the walls shudder.
"Restrain her." Casimir's voice is cold. "Before she brings the building down."
Something sharp stabs into my neck… blessed silver needle, poison that works on Convergence same as regular wolves. The world tilts, power draining away like water through my fingers.
"No..." I'm barely conscious. "Please..."
"Take her to the west tower." Casimir is giving orders like I'm cargo instead of his bride. "Post guards. No one in or out until after dawn."
"The ceremony… " the officiant starts.
"Is postponed." He's matter-of-fact. "Given the circumstances, we'll reconvene after the trial concludes and pack justice is served."
I'm being dragged now, feet barely touching the ground, through corridors that blur together. Up stairs. Through doors. Into a room that smells like stone and old magic.
They drop me on a bed. The door slams shut. A lock engages with supernatural finality… not just metal but magic, wards that will hold even Convergence power.
I'm alone.
Lucien is somewhere below, facing trial for crimes we both committed, about to be executed for conspiracy I helped create.
And I'm locked in a tower like some fairytale princess, powerless to stop any of it.
The blessed silver is wearing off slowly. I feel my power returning in painful increments… first sensation, then movement, then the wolf stirring beneath my skin.
