The Hidden Allies

The Hidden Allies
Isabella's POV

I woke up choking on seawater.

Someone was pulling me out of the ocean, dragging me onto what felt like a wooden dock. My lungs burned as I coughed up water and gasped for air.

"She's alive," a man's voice said. "But barely."

I opened my eyes and saw a stranger looking down at me. He had dark hair and kind eyes, but I didn't recognize him.

"Tony," I whispered, trying to sit up. "Where's Tony?"

"The FBI took him," the man said. "Paramedics pulled him out of the water first. He was breathing, but unconscious."

My heart felt like it was breaking all over again. "Is he going to be okay?"

"I don't know," the man admitted. "But he's alive. That's what matters right now."

I tried to stand, but my legs were shaking too much. "I have to get to him."

"You can't," the man said gently. "The hospital is crawling with FBI agents. Sarah Chen has guards posted outside his room. If you show up there, they'll arrest you."

"Then what am I supposed to do?" I asked desperately.

"You're supposed to trust me," the man said. "My name is Alex. I'm here to help you."

I looked at him suspiciously. "Why should I trust you? Everyone who's tried to help us has either betrayed us or gotten hurt."

Alex sat down next to me on the dock. "Because I'm in love with Sofia Moretti. And she's in trouble."

My heart stopped. "You know Sofia?"

"We've been dating in secret for six months," Alex said. "She didn't want Tony to know because she was afraid he wouldn't approve."

I thought about Sofia, Tony's sister who was supposed to be one of Vincent Senior's prisoners.

"Where is she?" I asked.

"That's complicated," Alex said. "Vincent Senior doesn't actually have her."

"What do you mean?"

Alex helped me stand and led me away from the dock. "Sofia escaped before Vincent Senior's men could grab her. She's been hiding with my family."

"Your family?"

"The Chen family," Alex said.

I stopped walking. "Chen? Like Sarah Chen?"

"Sarah is my cousin," Alex said. "But not all the Chens work for Vincent Senior. My part of the family has been fighting him for years."

This was getting confusing. "So there are good Chens and bad Chens?"

"There are Chens who want power, and Chens who want justice," Alex explained. "Unfortunately, Sarah chose power."

We walked to a car parked behind some warehouses. As Alex drove, he told me things that made my head spin.

"Vincent Senior has been taking over crime families for thirty years," Alex said. "But he hasn't gotten them all. There are still five families who refuse to work with him."

"Five families?"

"The Kowalskis, the Garcias, the Patels, the Johnsons, and part of the Chen family," Alex listed. "We've been working together to expose Vincent Senior's network."

"Why didn't you help us before?" I asked.

"We tried," Alex said. "Marcus was working with us. But Vincent Senior has spies everywhere. Every time we made a plan, he found out about it."

"So what's different now?"

Alex looked at me seriously. "Now we have you."

"What do you mean?"

"You're Vincent Russo Senior's great-granddaughter," Alex said. "But you're also the legal heir to the original crime families' alliance. If you call a meeting of all the families, they have to come."

I remembered what Elena had told me about my ring and my birthright. "But I don't want to be a crime boss."

"You don't have to be," Alex said. "You just have to be a leader long enough to unite everyone against Vincent Senior."

We drove to a house in a quiet neighborhood. When we went inside, I was surprised to see Sofia sitting at the kitchen table.

"Isabella!" Sofia jumped up and hugged me. "Thank God you're alive."

"Sofia, I'm so glad you're safe," I said, hugging her back.

But when I pulled away, I could see worry in her eyes.

"How's Tony?" she asked.

"He's in the hospital," I said. "The doctors don't know if he'll wake up."

Sofia started crying. "This is all my fault. If I hadn't gotten involved with Alex, maybe Vincent Senior wouldn't have targeted our family."

"This isn't your fault," I said firmly. "Vincent Senior has been planning this for thirty years."

Alex put his arm around Sofia. "We need to focus on stopping him before he hurts anyone else."

"How?" I asked.

"Tomorrow night, there's going to be a meeting," Alex said. "All the crime families will be there, including the ones working for Vincent Senior. It was supposed to be the meeting where you would demand war against Tony's family."

"But now?"

"Now it's our chance to expose Vincent Senior's lies," Alex said. "If you can convince the families that he's been manipulating them, they'll turn against him."

Sofia wiped her tears. "But it's dangerous. Vincent Senior will have people at that meeting. If they figure out what you're doing..."

"They'll kill me," I finished.

"We'll protect you," Alex said. "The resistance families will have people there too."

I thought about Tony lying unconscious in a hospital bed, surrounded by FBI guards who wanted to arrest me.

"What about Tony?" I asked. "What about my father and Tony's mother?"

"If the plan works, Vincent Senior will have to release them," Alex said. "If it doesn't work, they're dead anyway."

I sat down at the table, feeling overwhelmed. "So I have to choose between staying safe and trying to save everyone."

"You have to choose between hiding and fighting," Sofia said. "And I know my brother would want you to fight."

"But what if something goes wrong? What if Vincent Senior captures me too?"

Alex leaned forward. "Isabella, Vincent Senior is counting on you being too scared to act. He thinks you'll give up because the risk is too high."

"Maybe he's right," I said quietly. "Maybe I am too scared."

Sofia took my hand. "You're the bravest person I know. You've survived everything Vincent Senior has thrown at you. You can survive this too."

I touched my stomach, thinking about the baby growing inside me. "I'm not just responsible for myself anymore."

"What do you mean?" Sofia asked.

"I'm pregnant," I said quietly. "With Tony's baby."

Sofia gasped. "Oh, Isabella. That changes everything."

"Does it change the plan?" Alex asked.

I thought about it. On one hand, I wanted to protect my baby by staying hidden. On the other hand, what kind of world would my child grow up in if Vincent Senior won?

"No," I said finally. "It doesn't change the plan. It makes it more important."

"Are you sure?" Sofia asked.

"I'm sure," I said, though I was terrified. "My baby deserves to grow up in a world without Vincent Senior."

Alex smiled. "Then we do this tomorrow night."

"What exactly am I supposed to do at this meeting?" I asked.

"You're going to tell the truth," Alex said. "You're going to show them evidence of Vincent Senior's crimes. And you're going to ask them to stand with you against him."

"What evidence?"

Alex pulled out a laptop. "Remember Marcus's backup files? He gave them to us before Vincent Senior captured him."

"Marcus is alive?"

"For now," Alex said grimly. "But Vincent Senior is using him as bait. He knows you care about Marcus, so he's counting on you trying to rescue him."

"Where is Marcus?"

"On the same ship as your father and Tony's mother," Sofia said. "Vincent Senior moved all the prisoners together."

I felt a spark of hope. "So if we can find the ship..."

"We can rescue everyone at once," Alex finished. "But that's the second part of the plan."

"What do you mean, second part?"

Alex and Sofia looked at each other nervously.

"Isabella," Sofia said carefully, "the family meeting and the rescue mission are happening at the same time. Tomorrow night."

My heart sank. "You mean I have to choose."

"You have to choose between going to the meeting to expose Vincent Senior, or going on the rescue mission to save the prisoners," Alex said.

"But I can't do both?"

"The meeting is in the city," Sofia said. "The ship is twenty miles offshore. Even if everything goes perfectly, you can't be in both places."

I stared at them, feeling trapped again. "So either I try to save everyone politically, or I try to save my family physically. But I can't do both."

"That's right," Alex said sadly.

I thought about Tony in his hospital bed, about my father and Maria and Marcus on that ship, about all the crime families who needed to hear the truth.

"What happens if I choose the meeting and the rescue fails?" I asked.

"Then your family dies, but Vincent Senior's power is broken," Alex said.

"And if I choose the rescue and skip the meeting?"

"Then your family lives, but Vincent Senior wins," Sofia said. "And he'll come after all of us eventually."

I put my head in my hands. "This is impossible."

"There is a third option," Alex said quietly.

I looked up. "What?"

"You could do neither," Alex said. "You could disappear. Change your name, leave the country, start over somewhere far away."

"And let everyone else die?" I asked.

"And keep yourself and your baby safe," Sofia said. "No one would blame you, Isabella."

I stood up and walked to the window, looking out at the dark street.

Somewhere out there, Tony was fighting for his life.

Somewhere out there, my father was waiting for rescue.

Somewhere out there, Vincent Senior was planning to destroy everyone I loved.

I turned back to Alex and Sofia.

"I've made my decision," I said.

"Which option?" Sofia asked.

"Neither," I said. "I'm going to find a way to do both."

"Isabella, that's impossible," Alex said.

"Then I'll make it possible," I said firmly. "Because I'm not choosing between saving my family and stopping Vincent Senior. I'm going to do both, even if it kills me."

Sofia stood up. "How?"

I looked at my father's ring, still hanging around my neck.

"I'm going to split up," I said. "Part of me goes to the meeting, part of me goes to the ship."

"What does that mean?" Alex asked, confused.

That's when I heard a car engine outside. Then another. Then another.

"Someone's here," Sofia whispered.

Alex looked out the window and his face went white. "FBI cars. At least six of them."

"They found us," I said.

But as the cars stopped in front of the house, I saw something that made my heart stop.

The person getting out of the first car wasn't Sarah Chen.

It was Tony.

He was walking, talking, and very much alive.

"Tony!" I screamed, running toward the door.

But Alex grabbed my arm. "Wait. Something's wrong."

"What do you mean?"

"Look at his eyes," Sofia said quietly.

I looked closer through the window. Tony was walking toward the house, but his movements were strange. Robotic. Like he was sleepwalking.

And his eyes were completely blank.

"They did something to him," Alex said grimly. "Vincent Senior didn't just heal Tony. He's controlling him."

As Tony reached the front door, I could see other people getting out of the cars. FBI agents, but also people I didn't recognize.

"Isabella," Tony called out in a voice that sounded wrong. "I know you're in there. Come out. Vincent Senior wants to see you."

My blood turned to ice.

Tony wasn't here to rescue me.

He was here to capture me.

And he had no idea he was doing it.
