Chapter 45 At Peace with Arizona

Chapter 45 At Peace with Arizona
Morning light, soft and hesitant, painted the room in hues of pale gold. Sierra stirred, a lazy stretch of her limbs, before realizing the warmth and solid weight beside her was Ryder. She opened her eyes slowly, blinking as the details of the room came into focus. His arm was still around her, holding her close against him, their legs intimately entangled beneath the sheets.

A profound sense of peace washed over her, a quiet contentment hadn’t known since she was a child. This wasn't the fleeting satisfaction of closing a deal or the artificial high of a Manhattan night out, but a deeply fulfilling grounding of her soul. She traced the line of his jaw with a fingertip, a smile playing on her lips. She was about to throw away her carefully constructed life, walk away from Sterling & Quinn, for this ranch, for this feeling, and for this man.

But as the first rays of the Arizona sun fully illuminated the room, painting the familiar space in a new, unfamiliar light, a whisper of doubt snaked its way into her newfound peace. Could this truly last? Was this intense, beautiful connection nothing more than a transient escape, destined to fade when harsh reality? Ryder was the anchor, but was she strong enough to stay moored?
Sierra leaned into Ryder’s warmth, the faint scent of sage and leather clinging to his skin. Her doubt began to feel less potent, dulled by the pervasive tranquility of being held. This raw connection felt more real than any million-dollar deal.

Her fingers began to stroke the firm contours of his chest as she gazed at him

Ryder stirred, a low rumble in his chest as he tightened his arm around her. “Morning, Si,” he murmured, his voice husky with sleep. He opened his eyes, and a slow smile spread across his face, crinkling the corners.

“Morning,” she replied, her voice softer than she intended. She traced the line of his collarbone. “Slept well?”

“Best sleep I’ve had in years.” His gaze held hers, warm and steady.

She knew she had to say it. Now was the time, before the quiet intimacy of the morning faded. “Ryder,” she began, taking a breath. “About the ranch. And… everything.”

He propped himself up on an elbow, his eyes serious now. “What about it, Si?”

“The immediate threat of foreclosure is gone,” she said, pride swelling in her chest despite herself. “It’s not entirely out of the woods, not by a long shot. There are still major challenges, long-term sustainability issues, but we’ve bought ourselves time. A lot of time, if we play our cards right.”

A look of profound relief, mixed with awe, crossed Ryder’s face. He knew how dire the situation had been, how close they had come to losing everything. “You did that, Si. You saved it.”

She shook her head. “We saved it. Cody helped a little,” she added with a wry smile, thinking of her brother’s valiant but misguided efforts. “And Dad is still fighting.”

She studied him, her heart thumping a steady rhythm against her ribs. “I’m not leaving, Ryder. Not yet. Not for a while. I want to see this through. I want to help make the Sage Ranch truly thrive again. And I want to explore this… Whatever this is with you.” Her gaze softened, searching his.

A slow, tender smile spread across his face, and he leaned down to press a soft kiss to her forehead. “I hoped you’d say that, Si. More than anything.” He pulled her on top of him, and their lovemaking began anew, intensified by a newfound desire.

Hours later, the sun high, they shared a simple breakfast in the quiet kitchen, the comfortable silence punctuated by soft murmurs and stolen glances. The air between them hummed with a new kind of energy that was both exhilarating and strangely calming.

Ryder suggested a ride, and Sierra eagerly agreed.

They rode out, the only sounds the creak of leather, the soft thud of hooves, and the whisper of wind through the sagebrush. The Arizona landscape stretched before them, an endless canvas of russet earth, prickly pear cacti, and distant, jagged mountains shimmering in the heat haze. It was wild, untamed, and breathtakingly beautiful.

For the first time since she’d left, Sierra felt a profound sense of connection to it all.

“It’s beautiful out here, isn’t it?” she said, her voice hushed.

Ryder turned his head, his eyes crinkling at the corners. “Always has been. You just had to look close enough to see it.”

They rode side-by-side, their knees occasionally brushing, a silent language passing between them.

“We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us,” she said, her gaze sweeping over a section of fence that needed repair. “We need to explore new markets, maybe even circle back to the agritourism idea.” The last was testing him.

Ryder didn’t raise any objections. “You’re good at this, Si. Better than you think. You’ve got that fire in you, always have. Just aimed at different targets, is all.”

They rode for another hour, climbing a gentle rise to a plateau offering panoramic views of the entire valley. The Sage Ranch buildings were visible in the distance, tiny specks in the vastness.

Ryder reined in his horse, and Sierra followed suit. The wind was a gentle caress here, carrying the faint scent of mesquite. They sat in comfortable silence for a moment, simply taking in the majesty of the landscape.

Ryder reached across, his hand warm and strong as it closed over hers, his thumb stroking her skin. The simple touch sent a jolt of electricity through her.

“Sierra,” he began, his voice low, “this won’t be easy. Ranching requires a powerful commitment. It’s hard work, dust, long days, little glory. And we’ve got history between us, good and bad. But I want to try to make it work.”

Her eyes met his. In their depths, she saw a promise, a future she hadn’t dared to dream of. The doubt that had haunted earlier that morning dissolved. “I want to try too, Ryder,” she whispered, squeezing his hand. “More than anything. This feels right.”
Just then, her phone, forgotten in her jeans pocket, buzzed softly. She pulled it out, her heart lurching. Her breath hitched as she looked at the message from Chloe glowing on the screen:

Call me ASAP. Something has happened to Mr. Sterling.
