Saying you possessed magical abilities was the equivalent of saying you had an armed bomb. So no one spoke of it, no one saw it, no one had magic. If you were to use your magic in any way, shape, or form, they would lock you up in the smallest room in the highest tower if they could. Basically, you'll be in prison for a very long time, but I'm pretty sure you would suffer a much worse fate. That's all I've heard through whispers and rumors growing up since Inna and I have been on our own. This so called "unspoken law" forbidding magic strikes close to home. We are more involved than anybody knows, including Inna, but I have to keep this secret to keep her safe. I clutched at my crystal amulet that I wore around my neck, urging my nerves to subside. Inna wore an identical amulet, and we never took them off. Our mother made them for us, and if there was one thing I didn't lie to her about when it came to our past, it was that. Although my amulet usually calmed me, I was far from calm. Magic. Lots of magic. We were staring for what felt like forever when the air suddenly thickened, and we realized that not only did the music stop, but all eyes were on us. The large orbs of light scattered above the crowd became blinding as they were suddenly directed on us. "What do we do?" Inna whispered in nervousness. Before I could reply, a tall, slender woman emerged from the crowd. She had an air of superiority about her that demanded respect and attention. I subconsciously stood slightly infront of Inna, preparing for what was to come. "What are you doing here?" the tall, elderly woman asked sternly. I quickly replied, "We were sent a letter informing us to come here for the school year." Why else would we be here? She looked confused and slightly taken aback as if my explanation had no credibility. Like I was lying. I quickly opened my bag and handed the letter to her. She scanned it quickly before taking a few steps back. I was confused and a little bit scared. I'm not gonna lie. Maybe this was a mistake. Some kind of setup maybe, but it was too late to run without being seen. But I was prepared to run back into the dark forest anyways, grabbing Inna's hand tightly in mine. Before I could even take one step, a large ball of light came hurling towards us. It dissipated as quickly as it came when I realized my hand had shot up on instinct. I destroyed it...infront of what felt like a million prying eyes. As we were about to turn and make a run for it, the woman shouted, "Stop! You belong here!" Yeah, guess if we didn't, you would have been just fine killing two innocent bystanders. That's good to know, lady. We froze in our tracks. "Please follow me. No harm will come to the both of you," she said reassuringly. We shouldn't trust her. In spite of my doubts, I grabbed Inna's hand and hesitantly followed the woman. The crowd split in half like the parting sea as we walked and looked into the crowd. Suddenly, the cold night air hit my back, a shiver of fear resonating throughout my body. I felt vulnerable. I felt insecure. I could feel all eyes on us as we approached a large building, and I squeezed Inna's hand to let her know that everything was going to be okay. Her eyes were filled with alarm as she glanced over at me. No matter what, I was going to keep her safe. As we opened the large chamber doors, something compelled me to look back. I locked eyes with a stranger who possessed the deepest emerald green eyes I had ever seen in my life. For a split second, I was in a daze. My worries disappeared and a strange feeling washed over me. I faced forward and pushed the feeling away as we walked inside the large building. What have I got us into, I thought as the heavy, wooden doors slammed shut behind us.
