Chapter 30 The Fall of the Wardback Turtle

Chapter 30 The Fall of the Wardback Turtle
Behind them, Mira lay lifeless, Alex by her side applying what aid he could. He was fighting a losing battle as the girl's heart slowed almost to a stop. The pulse was faint, her breathing shallow.

Dying.

Clouse stepped forward to fill the space she had vacated. No flourish. No wasted motion. His blade lifted into guard and held.

The greater demon studied the shift, changing its own behavior in kind, almost as if it were mocking them. Each step drew another synchronized pulse from the Void Anchors. The fractured anchor Jax had cracked earlier was nearly whole again, the hairline damage sealing under a steady black glow.

The lattice had adapted.

Clouse struck first, testing. Steel met corruption with a ringing impact that split the air. The demon absorbed the blow instead of fighting back, making it clear he was the superior force. Redirecting its free hand, it carved a short arc toward Alex without committing fully.

Jax saw the intention immediately.

It was no longer focused on raw destruction.

It was isolating support.

He moved to intercept, ribs screaming as he forced himself between the claw and the stabilizing caster. Stone rose instinctively, not a full shield but layered slabs angled to deflect rather than stop. The strike shattered the first layer and cracked the second, claws carving through the stone. The demon withdrew before the counter could land, stepping back into the web of pulsing Void Anchors.

The anchors hummed in unison.

Clouse shifted his footing and advanced without waiting for another probe. He did not chase the demon into the lattice. His blade cut in a tight, disciplined arc aimed not at the torso but at the joint where corruption thickened along the creature's shoulder.

The strike landed clean.

Dark energy splintered outward in sharp fractures before pulling back into place. The demon did not recoil. Instead it grinned wildly. It absorbed the impact, then answered with precision.

Its counter was not wild or furious. It was targeted. The claw carved downward in a controlled line that forced Clouse to redirect rather than overpower. The shell beneath them cracked again as steel and shadow met, creating a visible field of distorted mana that faded quickly as the fight continued.

Behind him, Jax moved toward the fractured anchor, forcing himself to ignore the way his ribs tightened when he inhaled. He drove another compressed strike into the base of the anchor. The vibration traveled deeper this time. The obsidian surface splintered and a thicker crack split across its length.

The lattice reacted immediately.

Every anchor flared at once.

The veins between them tightened, pulling corruption inward in a violent surge that flowed straight into the greater demon. Its frame expanded, not in size, but in density.

The air around it grew heavier, pressing against skin and lungs alike. The turtle shifted beneath them, the movement carrying strain rather than defense. The demon stepped forward through the thickened air, slower than before but undeniably stronger.

Clouse braced.

Jax turned from the anchor just in time to see the claw descending toward them both. Behind them, Mira still did not move. Alex panicked visibly as he tried to keep her alive, his face smeared with dirt and blood.

And the anchors burned brighter than they had all fight.

The claw came down with enough force to crater the shell beneath them. Clouse met the strike head-on, steel screaming against condensed corruption as he redirected the blow just enough to spare Jax from taking it clean. Even so, the impact tore through his guard and drove him backward across fractured stone.

Jax did not waste the opening.

He pivoted off the displacement and drove his fist into the already fractured anchor with everything he had left. This time he did not aim for surface damage. He compressed the mana deeper, forcing the vibration downward instead of outward.

The anchor split.

Not just a hairline fracture.

A true crack through the obsidian root.

The sound that followed was deep and resonant, like something fundamental had been snapped out of alignment. The pulse across the lattice staggered violently. Two nearby anchors flickered in response, their glow destabilizing for the first time since the fight began.

The greater demon surged in reaction, instantly identifying where the strike had come from. The corruption feeding into it spasmed unevenly, creating a brief window where its density faltered.

Clouse saw it and struck without hesitation.

His blade cut across the creature's midsection, carving deep enough that black ichor sprayed across the shell.

For a moment it looked like progress.

Then the remaining Void Anchors compensated.

The lattice rebalanced in an instant. Every intact anchor flared brighter than before, channeling a concentrated stream of corruption directly into the wound Clouse had opened.

The cut sealed in seconds, thicker and darker than before.

The demon's posture changed.

It was no longer measuring its opponents.

It was done studying them.

It lifted both arms, and the Void Anchors began to hum in unison. The vibration sank inward instead of outward, pressing into bone and marrow. The fractured anchor at Jax's feet began to glow from within, pulsing violently in purple and grey hues.

"Fall back," Clouse ordered.

No one was able to move fast enough.

The greater demon lowered its arms and drove both claws into the shell.

Not toward them.

Into the turtle.

The impact was purely invasive. Corruption surged downward through the lattice like black lightning forced into a wound. The emerald light beneath the shell flared violently in protest.

Then fractured.

The turtle screamed.

This time the sound did not echo through air.

It tore through the mind.

Jax dropped to one knee as the pressure split through his skull. Alex staggered but did not release Mira. Clouse forced himself upright through sheer refusal. The demon lifted its claws from the shell slowly, deliberately, dragging corruption with them. The Void Anchors flared brighter than they had all fight, veins snapping tight across the entire carapace.

The emerald glow beneath their feet dimmed to a thin pulse.

The demon turned its gaze toward Jax, bloodlust spilling from its aura. The lattice was no longer feeding it.

It was draining the turtle.

And the next pulse would finish the conversion.
