Chapter 31 Suspects

Chapter 31 Suspects
LUCIAN:
I suddenly woke up from my sleep. For some reason, I felt uneasy.

I looked around my room to check if there was anything strange going on but everything seemed alright. No one had broken in. The night was as silent as a graveyard. But my wolf was still unsettled.

“What’s going on?” I whispered. I had a really rough time during today's training and the disturbance of any sort was the last thing I needed.

I had already opened the duvet to crawl back into bed when I heard the splashing of water. It was faint, really faint, but my instinct was never wrong. Something strange was going on.
I threw a black shirt over my bare upper body and strode outside.

“If anyone dares to break in here or touch her…” I clenched my fists, ready to beat the hell out of the intruder. I took long and fast steps toward the back of my house. I sighted the pool from afar, although I couldn’t see inside properly.

There was no trace of anyone in the air or even physically. Nothing seemed out of the usual, not until the sparkling blue pool started turning red.
My brows creased into a frown as I slowly approached the pool. Was someone trying to play a prank on me?

I thought it was a joke until I saw \]Tara lying unconscious, her body floating on the surface of the water.
I didn’t know when I dived inside and swam to her. I wasn’t the type that took any action without thinking but this one, I jumped in without bothering if it was a trap or not.

“Tara!” I called her but she wasn’t responding. I knew it wasn’t a dream because of my experience with dream sight. Besides, Tara was the only person in the entire world who could manipulate people's dreams like me. And she doesn’t even know the power she possesses.

My fingers brushed the knife wound in her lower abdomen. I seethed, looking around furiously but there was nobody there. Not even a scent was left lingering. Whoever did this was experienced. A little bit too knowledgeable about me. It could even be that they didn’t come for her but she happened to have caught them.

Immediately, I pulled her out of the water but there was nothing I could do about the cut. She was still bleeding and it wasn’t healing. I didn’t have any medicine with me and it would take some time to get through to the pack witch.

I ran my fingers through my hair in frustration. I had no idea what to do. There was no hospital close by and Mason would never take my call by this time.
“What were you doing out here?” I sighed. It was right then that I remembered I had a car as I could drive too. I had gotten so used to Mason taking me everywhere.
I carefully lifted her unconscious body. Good thing she was still breathing, but barely.

I drove to the hospital and immediately, and she was immediately admitted. Even the medicine I thought would solve everything wouldn't help at that point after application so she was immediately booked for an operation.

I was almost going insane. Who would dare to come into my house and attack Tara? What was their initial motive?
I quickly phoned Rowan and he picked up almost immediately.

“Alpha Lucian…” He called out lazily and yawned.

“Be at my place by 7 in the morning. Don’t be late. Call Mason too. Treat as urgent.” I ended the call without waiting to get his response.

This action could only mean one thing: There was a traitor within.
And I swear to fish them out, even if it’s the last thing I do.

By morning, the three of us were in my backyard, investigating the crime scene.

“Poor Tara, how did she get dragged into this?” Mason sympathized.

“If she had just stayed inside, none of this would have happened. She’s stubborn and rude. And if you ask me, I think she deserves it.” He huffed, folding his arms. I flashed him a glare, silently threatening him not to badmouth her.

Now that I was thinking clearly, I could see some clues. The fence which was pure white had been stained and I could see some prints on the wall.

Remembering the angle of Tara's wounds, the culprit was left-handed.

“Hmmm… there’s only one way to confirm my suspicions,” I muttered to myself. “Go back to your positions. I’ll call you when needed.” I dismissed them.

Of course, I couldn’t tell them everything that I had figured out. Even the both of them weren’t exempted from my list of suspects.

As I was about to leave, my eyes noticed a piece of jewelry on the ground. It was small, yet so shiny. It must have fallen off after he stabbed Tara.
I couldn't even begin to imagine the fear she felt being alone with a stranger.

"I'll find them, Tara, and I promise to return the favour."

I went back to the hospital where Tara was admitted. The surgery had been done and she had been wheeled to another room.

I watched her breathe softly and peacefully but I knew all that was about to end because I needed information from her. And to get that, she had to relive that dreadful experience.

After gaining access to her mind and the previous event, I hid somewhere she couldn't see me. My presence would end up ruining everything and causing complications in her mind.

I watched everything from the beginning to the end. I watched how the intruder got access to my house, how he approached hr an how she got stabbed and pushed into the water. And as I had deduced earlier, he was left handed. The figure ran away, leaving her to die in the pool. I pulled out of the dream, panting slowly. Using my ability drained my energy to an extent.

But the good thing was this: I already knew the culprit.
