After Max's sudden arrival, Isabelle experienced a flurry of unanswered questions and stress in the days that followed.
Her newfound bond with his cousin had been rejected by Liam, and his ever-present staff appeared to be doing all in their power to keep them apart.
Isabelle was stuck in a gilded cage, yet she couldn't escape the notion that Max was a lifeline, a link to the outside world.
Desperate for a familiar face and a break from the oppressive world of riches and power surrounding her, she sought him out whenever she had the chance.
Their secret rendezvous became a sort of ritual: quiet talks in the penthouse's quiet corners and minutes of stolen time in deserted halls.
And every time they crossed paths, Isabelle was dragged further and further into Max's orbit, her interest sparked by the peeks he provided into Liam's tightly closed world.
"He wasn't always like this, you know," Max whispered to him one day while they sat close to one another in the penthouse library, whispering conspiratorial things in their heads.
"I mean, Liam. He was once something else entirely." Isabelle knitted her brows as she watched him. "Different how?"
Max's eyes clouded over with a mixture of regret and grief as his expression got painful.
"I guess it's warmer, more transparent. But something about him seemed to... stiffen following the death of our father."
With a regretful smile tugging at his lips, he shook his head.
"Not that we were especially close at any point. I was like night and day with Liam, even as children. He was usually the one who was motivated and serious, whereas I was..." He trailed off, his eyes getting a little averted.
With a faint smile on her lips, Isabelle concluded for him, "While you were the dreamer."
Max smiled back at her, the corners of his eyes crinkling. "Exactly. To my father's dismay, art has always been my true passion."
A relaxed quietness enveloped them, interrupted solely by the gentle ticking of the grandfather clock situated in the corner.
Observing Max's recognizable features, Isabelle was astounded by how little he had changed over the years: the same tousled hair and the same warm, endearing eyes that had captivated her from the first time they met.
She said softly, "I've missed you, you know," before she could stop herself. Max returned her stare, his expression unreadable.
"Isabelle..." However, the moment was broken before he could say anything further by the sound of approaching footsteps echoing down the hallway.
A familiar, intimidating figure appeared as the library door swung open, and Isabelle tensed, her body coiling tight as a spring.
With narrowed eyes, Liam said, "There you are," taking in the scene in front of him. "I've been looking everywhere for you, Isabelle."
With her heart racing in her chest, Isabelle took a deep breath. "Liam, I..."
However, Liam had already turned to face Max, his look growing gloomy.
He bit out, "And you," his voice filled with hardly restrained rage. "Lurking about like some kind of stray dog, sniffing where you don't belong."
Max stood up, straightening his shoulders in opposition. "Liam, I was just keeping Isabelle company. Not a thing more."
A sardonic smile curved Liam's lips. "Obviously. How silly I was to believe anything other."
His eyes glinted with something like contempt as he briefly glanced at Isabelle.
"Go now, my beloved wife. We need to talk about the gala preparations this weekend."
The sweet compliment, tinged with a sense of danger, had Isabelle's stomach turn into knots.
She glanced helplessly at Max, silently begging him to step in.
Max, though, just shook his head, seeming resigned.
"Go ahead, Isabelle. I'll make time to talk to you later."
The rejection hurt more than Isabelle would have liked to acknowledge.
She followed Liam out of the library with leaden steps, feeling his piercing gaze on the back of her neck.
Liam turned to face her when they were alone, his countenance booming. He growled, low and menacing...
"What did I tell you about fraternizing with that man?"
The impulse to shrink back was resisted by Isabelle, who let her own defiance flare up.
"Liam, Max is my friend. The sole genuine friend I possess here."
Liam emitted a rough, bitter laugh.
"Comrade? Isabelle, don't be so innocent. Guys with ambitions, like Max, don't have friends." He moved in closer, making his massive form appear to tower over her. "Can't you see that he's taking advantage of you? Attempting to penetrate my defenses and discredit me in my own house."
Isabelle's eyebrows furrowed in perplexity. "Liam, that is ludicrous. Max would never do that.
Sufficient!" Liam yelled, his barely controlled rage showing in his eyes. "You can stop playing with that snake, I promise. Do you realize that you have to avoid him going a step further?"
Isabelle felt the weight of the ultimatum crushing her. It hung heavy in the air.
Liam was insisting that she cut the tie that was Max's lifeline, her only link to the world outside the golden cage.
Her voice quivered slightly as she posed the question...
"And if I refuse?"
Liam's jaw clenched tight as his expression tightened.
"After that, you'll be abandoned and left with nothing. No future, no money, and no protection." His icy, merciless gaze was penetrating her. "Is that what Isabelle wants? to become a destitute nobody living on the streets and begging?"
There was no denying the menace.
Liam was the one with complete control and power, and he had no qualms about using it as a weapon.
With a forceful swallow, Isabelle met his stern stare, her determination stiffening.
Her lips trailed off into a murmur, "No," the word tasted like ash. "I'll... do as you say."
Liam's mouth formed a ruthless imitation of a smile. "Well done, good girl. Let's now prepare you for the gala, shall we? After all, we have to keep up our appearances."
Isabelle couldn't get rid of the sensation that the noose was getting tighter and that the walls of her opulent prison were closing in on her as he swept out of the room, leaving her to deal with her racing thoughts and the sour taste of defeat.
The puppeteer was working in the dark, somewhere, manipulating strings to create a complex web from which there was no way out.
Damien Russo was studying the most recent intelligence that his assistant had gathered while lounging in his luxurious leather chair in the clean, contemporary offices of Russo Enterprises across town.
He had a contented smile on his lips. He said, "Well, well," as he skimmed the pages in front of him. "It seems our friend Liam has become quite the master of manipulation."
Rachel, always the professional, didn't show any emotion. "It would appear his relationship with the girl is... strained, to say the least."
Damien grinned more broadly, almost menacingly. "And Max, this cousin, what about him? What do we now know about him?"
With her finely crafted eyebrows slightly raised, Rachel looked through her notes.
Since their father's passing, it appears that he and Liam have been apart from one another for a long time.
To Liam's dismay, Max opted to pursue his artistic pursuits instead of working for the family company.
A contented giggle from Damien's throat grew slowly.
"How deliciously predictable, a family quarrel. And this... bond between the girl and Max?"
"Possibly troublesome," Rachel said. "Our sources indicate they share a close bond, one that Liam is threatened by."
Damien's eyes shone with an almost unbearable joy. "Excellent. utterly flawless."
A sarcastic smile curled his lips as he leaned back in his chair and curled his fingers beneath his chin.
"You know what they say, Rachel – the closer the relation, the deeper the betrayal cuts."
With caution, Rachel looked at him; she must have noticed the unsettling sparkle in his eye.
"What did you have in mind, sir?"
Damien's smile broadened and became decidedly predatory.
"Well, don't you think it's time we gave our good friend Liam more of a hard time? We'll observe how he responds to any minor family conflict."
Damien managed to smile cruelly and coldly as Rachel swept out of the room after giving a harsh nod.
No matter how many pawns he had to give up in the process, he had no intention of losing the game.
Damien would be there to deal the last, fatal blow to Liam's world, which was about to collapse.
And when it was all over, he would be triumphant, standing on the ruins of his worst enemy's crumbling empire.
