Isabelle, dressed in a simple sundress and flats walked into the grand living room, her heart still drumming from the unsettling encounter at the mall. A sense of unease clung to her like a damp clinging fog. She glanced at Liam who was sprawled on the oversized leather sofa engrossed in a newspaper. He was a picture of serenity, a stark contrast to the turmoil churning within her.
"Liam, you're not going to work?" she questioned, her voice edged with a quiet tremor.
Liam lifted his gaze from the paper, his expression a mask of indifference. "No, I'm taking the day off," he replied, his voice flat and emotionless.
Isabelle, feeling a wave of apprehension washes over her, walked towards him, her steps hesitant. An unspoken tension pulsed in the air between them, a tension that had become a constant companion since their contract marriage.
"I saw Kyle at the mall," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "He... he wasn't exactly pleasant. He seemed angry, Liam."
Liam's forehead creased with a frown, his eyes narrowing. "What do you mean, not pleasant? What did he say?"
"He... he said that you'll be back with him eventually. He said..." Isabelle faltered, her throat suddenly choked with fear. "He said that he wouldn't hesitate to make sure I don't get in the way of that."
Liam slammed the newspaper onto the coffee table, the sound echoing in the cavernous room. "What the hell, Isabelle? He wouldn't dare!"
"But he did." she pleaded, her voice shaking. "He was... he was menacing. I felt threatened, Liam. I'm scared."
Liam rose to his feet, towering over her. His face was hardened, his jaw clenched tight. His eyes met hers but there was a flicker of something else in them - not anger, but a hint of something deeper, something that made Isabelle's heart clench in her chest.
"He won't touch you. You're safe here, Isabelle. I promise you that." he said, his tone now laced with a hint of desperation.
But his words did little to quell the fear that had gripped her. She saw the way Liam's eyes followed her every move, the way his hands clenched into fists at her every word. It was as if he was fighting a battle within himself, a battle that echoed the turmoil within her soul.
"Liam, I just... I don't feel safe here anymore," she said, tears welling up in her eyes. "I can't shake this feeling that something is... wrong. What if he...?"
"He won't do anything." Liam interrupted, his voice rough with concealed emotion. "He knows he can't. And if he tries anything, I'll make sure he regrets it for the rest of his life."
He stepped closer, his presence imposing. His hand reached out, his fingers grazing her cheek. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the oppressive silence.
"Isabelle, listen to me," he said, his voice softer now and laced with a hint of tenderness despite the underlying tension. "I'm here. I'm here to protect you. You don't have to be afraid."
But Isabelle couldn't shake the chilling feeling that something was amiss. Liam's presence now felt like a cage. She yearned for a sense of normalcy, for the familiar warmth of her childhood home, a place where she could breathe freely without the suffocating weight of Liam's gaze.
"Liam, why are you even here today?" she asked, her voice wavering with a mixture of apprehension and a growing sense of confusion. "I thought you had a meeting."
Liam's gaze softened, a fleeting expression of vulnerability crossing his face. "I... I wanted to spend some time with you," he admitted, his voice a low murmur.
Isabelle's heart skipped a beat. This was not the Liam Callahan she knew. This was a man stripped bare, revealing a vulnerable core beneath his polished facade.
"Liam, are you serious?" she asked, her voice laced with disbelief. "You skipped work just to... to be with me?"
Before Liam could answer, the sharp trill of a phone ringing cut through the tense silence. Liam, seemingly relieved by the interruption, answered the phone, his expression hardening once again.
"Yes, it's me. Okay, I'll be there in an hour. I need to talk to you about this, Michael."
Liam hung up the phone and turned to Isabelle, his face etched with a mixture of irritation and a veiled sense of relief. "It's a business call. I have to go. It"s a video call from work."
He turned on his heel, his tall, imposing figure disappearing down the hallway as he walked to his study. Isabelle watched him leave, a wave of conflicting emotions washing over her.
Instinct took over, and she made her way to the bedroom. She locked the door, her heart pounding in her chest. She grabbed her phone, her fingers trembling as she dialed Max's number.
"Max, it's Isabelle. I need to talk to you. I need help. I'm scared."
Max's voice, a comforting presence amid her turmoil came through the phone. "Isabelle, what's wrong? Where are you?"
"I" 'm at Liam's house," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Please, Max, I need to talk to you. I'm afraid."
Max, his voice low and reassuring, responded, "Relax, Isabelle. I'll be there in twenty minutes. Meet me at the coffee shop on the corner of Maple and Oak."
Just as she was about to hang up, she heard a door open and Liam stood there. Panic seized her, and she hastily ended the call, her breath catching in her throat.
Liam entered the room, his eyes narrowed, his gaze sweeping over her. "Who were you talking to?" he asked, his voice laced with suspicion. "And where were you going?"
"No one." Isabelle lied, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. "I was just going to take a bath."
Liam's eyes, keen and unwavering, met hers. "Don't lie to me, Isabelle," he said, his voice a low growl. "I know you're talking to Max. I'm not stupid, Isabelle."
He stepped closer, his eyes piercing through her facade. "We're all playing games," he said, his voice a mixture of accusation and a hint of desperation. "But I'm not going to be the one to lose. You don't get to play me for a fool."
Isabelle couldn't bear the intensity of his gaze. She turned away, her shoulders slumping with a sense of defeat. She knew he was right. She couldn't hide her fear, her need for support, from him, especially not after the encounter with Kyle.
"Just leave me alone. she muttered, her voice barely a whisper. "I need some time to myself."
Liam stood there for a moment, his gaze burning into her back. Then, with a heavy sigh, he turned and walked out of the room. The sound of the door closing behind him was like a physical blow to her heart.
As Isabelle slipped into the warm embrace of the bath, her mind raced with a multitude of conflicting emotions. Fear, doubt, confusion, a deep-seated longing for a life beyond this gilded cage.
Liam's words echoed in her mind, his accusation a stark reminder of the precarious reality of their situation. She couldn't afford to be careless. She was caught in a web of deceit and manipulation, a game she didn't fully understand....
