102. A restless night

The night was quiet, with only the occasional rustle of leaves outside the Moretti mansion breaking the stillness. Isla lay sound asleep, her breathing soft and even as she rested after another exhausting day with the children. Dante had just turned off the bedside lamp, his body sinking into the comfort of their bed.

The peace of the night was suddenly broken by the sharp cries of baby Leo from the nursery down the hall.

Dante's eyes snapped open immediately, his instincts as a father kicking in before Isla could even stir. He placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder as she began to wake. "Stay here, amore," he whispered. "I'll check on him."

Sliding out of bed, Dante threw on a robe and padded quietly out of the room, his steps muffled by the thick carpet. The cries grew louder as he approached the nursery, tugging at his heart.

When he entered, the sight of his son squirming in his crib greeted him. Leo's tiny fists waved in the air, his face red with distress. Dante wasted no time, scooping the baby up into his arms.

"Shhh, piccolo," he murmured, rocking Leo gently. "What's wrong, hmm? Did you have a bad dream?"

The baby's cries softened slightly as Dante paced the room, humming a soothing tune. The way Leo nestled against his chest, his little body seeking comfort, filled Dante with a profound sense of love and protectiveness.

As he continued to sway and murmur soft reassurances, something caught his attention. A faint creak, barely audible, came from the direction of the staircase. Dante's movements stilled for a moment, his sharp gaze snapping toward the nursery door.

The house was supposed to be secure. He had ensured that every lock, every camera, every alarm system was in place to protect his family. Yet, in the stillness of the night, he could feel an unsettling presence.

With Leo still in his arms, Dante moved toward the nursery door, his steps calculated and quiet. Peeking out into the dimly lit hallway, his sharp eyes scanned for any signs of movement.

Then he saw it-a fleeting shadow moving along the staircase. It was subtle, almost like a trick of the light, but Dante knew better. His instincts screamed at him that someone was there.

His grip on Leo tightened protectively as his mind raced. Could it be a burglar? An enemy from his business world trying to infiltrate his home? The thought made his blood boil. No one, absolutely no one, would dare harm his family.

For a moment, he debated waking Isla, but he didn't want to alarm her unnecessarily. Instead, he stepped back into the nursery and placed Leo gently back in his crib. The baby had finally stopped crying, his tiny breaths evening out as he drifted back to sleep.

Dante brushed a hand over Leo's soft hair, his expression hardening. "Don't worry, little one. Daddy will handle this."

Dante slipped silently out of the nursery, his muscles taut with tension as he descended the staircase. The house was shrouded in darkness, with only the faint moonlight streaming through the large windows providing any illumination.

His sharp eyes scanned every corner, every shadowed alcove, as he made his way toward the main floor. The sound of his own breathing was the only noise, but his ears were trained to pick up even the slightest disturbance.

As he reached the bottom of the stairs, he noticed the front door was firmly shut, the alarm system blinking steadily. Everything seemed in place, yet the nagging feeling that someone was there persisted.

Dante's hand instinctively moved toward the small pistol he kept hidden in a drawer in the hallway. He pulled it out silently, his fingers curling around the familiar weight of the weapon.

"Who's there?" he called out, his voice low and commanding. It echoed through the quiet house, but no answer came.

He moved methodically through each room, checking windows, doors, and any potential hiding spots. The kitchen, the living room, and even his study were all clear.

Just as he was beginning to think he might have imagined it, he heard a faint sound-a soft thud coming from the direction of the back patio.

Dante's jaw tightened as he moved toward the sound, his steps careful and deliberate. The patio door was locked, but beyond the glass, he thought he saw movement.

His eyes narrowed as he flipped the switch to flood the backyard with light. The sudden brightness illuminated the space, but there was no one there. The faint rustling of bushes caught his attention, and he stepped closer to the glass, his gun at the ready.

"Coward," he muttered under his breath. Whoever it was had clearly fled.

Satisfied that the immediate danger had passed, Dante locked the patio door and reset the alarm system. He made a mental note to review the security footage in the morning and double-check the perimeter with his guards.

As he climbed the stairs back to the bedroom, his thoughts lingered on the shadow he'd seen. Was it really someone, or had his mind been playing tricks on him? Either way, he couldn't afford to take chances.

When he entered the bedroom, Isla was awake, sitting up with a worried expression.

"Dante, is everything okay? You've been gone for a while," she asked, her voice tinged with concern.

He placed the pistol back in the drawer by their bed before sitting beside her. "Everything's fine," he assured her, though his tone was serious. "Leo had a little trouble sleeping, and I thought I heard something downstairs. Probably just my imagination."

Isla frowned, her hand reaching out to touch his arm. "Are you sure? Should we call the security team?"

Dante leaned in, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "I've already checked the house. The alarm is on, and we're safe. Don't worry, amore."

Though her worry didn't entirely fade, Isla nodded, trusting him to protect them as he always did.

While Isla eventually drifted back to sleep, Dante found himself unable to close his eyes. He sat in a chair by the window, watching the shadows outside with a protective vigilance.

Every so often, he'd glance at the nursery monitor, ensuring that Leo was still sleeping peacefully. His thoughts were a whirlwind of suspicion and determination.

Dante knew that as a man in his position, threats were inevitable. But the idea of anyone endangering Isla, Amara, or Leo filled him with a rage he could barely contain.

As dawn broke, casting a golden glow over the mansion, Dante made a silent vow. Whoever had dared to invade his sanctuary-whether real or imagined-would regret it.

For now, though, he let the sight of his sleeping family bring him a moment of calm. Isla stirred in her sleep, and he walked over to kiss her gently.

"Nothing will ever harm you," he whispered, his voice filled with resolve. "I'll make sure of it."
