Methis Delis POV

I felt a surge of nervousness as I entered the clinic. It was my first time undergoing the surrogate checkup process, and I had no idea what to expect. The wolf people had a different way of monitoring their pregnancies, and I was the first human to carry their child.

“Relax, Methis. It’s not that bad.” Beta said, sensing my anxiety. He was the one who brought me here, since Jamal had some urgent business to attend to.

He took my hand and led me to a room where a female wolf doctor was waiting. He smiled warmly and gestured for me to lie down on a bed. She then attached some wires and electrodes to my belly and chest, and turned on a monitor.

“This will show us the heartbeat and growth of your baby.” She explained. “Don’t worry, it won’t hurt.”

I nodded, trying to calm myself. I looked at Beta, who was standing next to me. He smiled reassuringly and squeezed my hand. I felt a wave of gratitude and affection for him. He had been through so much, yet he still cared for me.

I noticed the scars on his face, the reminders of his past abuse. I wondered what had happened to him, and who had hurt him so badly. I wanted to ask him, but he seemed reluctant to talk about it.

“Thank you for being here with me.” I said sincerely.

He smiled back, but before he could say anything, the door opened and Jamal walked in. He looked angry and tense, his eyes flashing with possessiveness.

He saw me holding Beta’s hand, and his expression darkened. He walked over to us, and pulled me away from Beta.

“What are you doing?” He growled at Beta. “Get away from her.”

Beta flinched and backed off, lowering his head in submission.

“Jamal, stop it.” I said quietly, hurt by the way he reacted and yet not wanting to offend him. “He was just comforting me.”

Jamal ignored me, and glared at Beta.

“She’s mine.” He said firmly. “And so is our child. You have no right to touch her.”

He wrapped his arm around me protectively, and led me out of the room.

I looked back at Beta, who looked hurt and confused.

I felt sorry for him, but I also felt a strange attraction to Jamal’s dominance, here he was. So powerful, he made a man as threatening as Beta cower in submission, and yet of all the women in his pack, he chose me.

I didn’t know what to think about it.

His eyes turned over to look at me, cold, unassuming. I tried to avert my gaze quickly but it was too late. He had caught me staring, again. "Fuck." I muttered under my breath.

"What was that?" He asked, his voice deep and impatient.

I swore again, this time in my mind, I kept forgetting he had superhuman hearing.

"What was what?" I raised my face, looking back at him innocently. Maybe if I feigned ignorance, he wouldn't push this too hard.

He turned, approaching me slowly, his eyes never leaving my face, "You were staring at me Methis, just now."

I seized my breath as he approached me, the strength of his cologne filling my nostrils and weakening my knees even as they lay suspended on the table. How on earth did this man gain such a hold on me?

I swallowed hard, "I wasn't. I wasn't looking at you."

He stopped at the foot of the bed, his hands in his pockets, his eyes never leaving my face, boring deep into me. "I am pretty sure you were."

I started to grow indignant, this was very clearly his attempt to bully me, "I said I wasn-!"

"You are overthinking aren't you?" He asked, cutting me short immediately.

I frowned, "Excuse me?"

He didn't reply immediately, just kept quiet for a while, staring at me, "I have seen that look before Methis." He said finally, slowly lowering his great, massive to sit at the foot of the bed. I watched him slowly, not knowing whether to feel impressed or intimidated by the graceful way he performed each action. Almost deliberately, with the precision of a surgeon. His movement as lithe as they were powerful, making even the simplest actions, like sitting on a fucking bed, look like it was an Olympic sport and he was a gold medalist.

I swallowed hard, "What look?"

"You are asking yourself questions aren't you? Why me? Why are we here?"

Okay, I had seen a lot of freaky shit in this world, but this might have to take the prize. And the look of shock on my face must have been a dead giveaway because for the first time that day, he smirked looking satisfied with himself. "Gotcha." He whispered.

"How did you-?"

"Not important," he replied, waving my question away dismissively. "Am I right?"

I frowned, getting up to prop myself up on my elbow, "Well, since we are here, and since you brought it up, why AM I here? Why me?"

I felt the frustration starting to boil over now, the reality of being introduced into a whole new world I had no idea existed had distracted me from the fact that I had been forced into this, without my consent, I had been given no choice, I at the very least deserved to understand why this was happening to me. I summoned the courage.

"You are Alpha, right? You are the big guy here, you run this place. You could quite literally pick ANY woman you want, anybody at all to do this, why me?"

He smiled, a rare, uncommon event and leaned over to pat my head, "Quiet now." He hushed, "The doctor is on his way."

* * *

I sat in the doctor's office, feeling a mix of curiosity and unease as he explained the instructions to Jamal. The male Alpha listened intently, his eyes focused on the doctor's every word. It was baffling to see him take the issue of offspring so seriously, considering his exceptional appearance and high status as the Wolf King. Why would someone like him be so invested in the process of surrogacy? The question nagged at the back of my mind, but I kept my thoughts to myself.

As the doctor finished speaking, I couldn't help but almost laugh at the absurdity of the situation. I had expected my role as the Female Lead to be anything but conventional, but I never imagined playing the part of a surrogate mother. It was a strange predicament, one that left me puzzled and curious about the male lead's motives.

Sensing my gaze upon him, Jamal's voice cut through the air, stern and commanding. "Methis, there's no need to overthink things. Focus on what you need to do and carry out your role as we've agreed."

I bit my lip, suppressing the questions that threatened to spill from my tongue. I understood his desire for an heir, but why had he chosen me? Out of all the potential candidates, why had he entrusted this task to someone like me? The words remained unsaid, but the unspoken thoughts hung heavy in the room.

After the checkup, Jamal disappeared once again, leaving me alone with Beta, his trusted companion. Beta, a towering figure with a demeanor that commanded respect, led me through the halls of the palace. Silence enveloped us for a moment before Beta broke it with a nod of apology.

"On behalf of the wolf servants, I want to apologize for their earlier rudeness towards you, Methis. They are protective of our Alpha and misunderstood your role."

I smiled softly, accepting the apology. "It's alright, Beta. I understand their concerns. It's just a lot to take in, you know? This new world and the responsibilities that come with it."

Beta nodded in understanding, his eyes filled with a profound loyalty. "Yes, it can be overwhelming. But rest assured, we value your presence here, and we will do everything in our power to support you."

As we continued our tour of the palace, Beta shared stories of the werewolf history and the traditions that governed their society. The fast-paced dialogue painted a vivid picture of a world steeped in mythology and rich with unique customs. It was a glimpse into a realm I had never known, and though I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe, I also felt the weight of the responsibility resting on my shoulders.

Hours later, as we finished our tour and bid each other farewell, I found myself reflecting on the whirlwind of events that had unfolded since I entered Jamal's life. The unexpected circumstances had thrust me into a position I never could have imagined, but I couldn't deny the underlying sense of purpose that rang within me. I may not have understood Jamal's reasons fully, but I was determined to fulfill my role as the surrogate mother and support him in his quest for an heir.

That was the least I could do. And then get the hell out of here as quickly as possible, back to my own home, to my father, to take care of him, for what little time he had left.

As I retired to my room, thoughts and doubts swirled in my mind, mingling with the excitement that tinged every thought of the future. The path ahead was uncertain, fraught with challenges and unforeseen twists, but I was prepared to face them head-on.

Little did I know, it was all going to prove more challenging than I could ever imagine, and I was absolutely unprepared for it all.
