Chapter 94

Chapter 94
The night air carried the scent of rain even though the sky above the town was dry. Lila stepped out of the alley first, her legs shaking from the climb and the chase, but her mind strangely clear. The streets looked familiar again, quiet and washed in pale streetlight, but nothing felt the same. It was as if the entire town had shifted while she was gone, as if all the shadows were watching her.

Nate came up beside her. He checked the street one more time before giving a small nod that told everyone to move. Mia and Ethan followed close behind, and the four of them slipped down the block like people who knew danger still clung to their heels.

Lila kept her eyes on the road ahead. Every parked car made her heart race. Every open window made her wonder who might be watching.

“We need to reach Mia’s place,” Nate said quietly. “It is the only safe house we have left.”

Mia nodded. “No one knows about the spare entrance behind the old fence. We will be fine there.”

Ethan stayed silent, almost walking behind them instead of with them. Lila felt his distance but did not comment. She had no space left inside her for anything except survival.

As they turned the corner toward the residential area, Lila felt someone touch her elbow. She flinched until she realized it was Nate.

“You are too quiet,” he said under his breath. “Talk to me.”

She kept walking and tried to steady her voice. “I am thinking.”

“About Daniel.”

“About everything,” she said. “About how he always knows our moves even before we make them.”

Mia glanced over her shoulder. “He will not find us tonight. The police showed up fast. Someone must have called them.”

“That is what scares me,” Lila said softly. “We did not.”

They all fell silent again.

When they reached the row of small houses near the end of the street, Mia slipped between two fences and led them into a narrow passage lined with tall grass. At the end of the path stood a small wooden door almost hidden behind an overgrown bush. She pushed the door open and waved them in.

The shed behind her house was old but large enough to hold tools, boxes, and now four exhausted people. Nate closed the door and locked the latch without needing to be asked. Lila sank onto an overturned bucket while Mia searched for a flashlight.

The beam flickered to life, revealing shelves filled with paint cans and garden supplies. The faint glow made the place feel less like a hiding spot and more like a pause in the storm.

Ethan sat down on a crate and rubbed his face with both hands. “This is insane. I feel like I am in some crime movie.”

“You helped create this movie,” Mia muttered.

He winced but did not argue.

Nate stayed near the door, listening again. He never seemed to let himself rest, even when he needed to. Lila watched him from the corner of her eye. His shirt was torn on the sleeve, and there was dirt on his jaw, but he still carried himself like someone who refused to bend.

She finally asked, “Why did you block the tunnel entrance like that when Daniel spoke? He would have gone after you first.”

He looked at her with a calm expression that made her chest ache. “I was not thinking about myself.”

“Maybe you should sometimes.”

Nate held her gaze for a moment, but he did not answer. Instead, he stepped farther into the shed and pulled a folded map from his pocket. He laid it on top of a dusty table and motioned for all of them to come closer.

He pointed to three circles drawn in red ink. “These are the places Daniel controls. Streets, buildings, and the old laundromat near the railway bridge. He has eyes everywhere here. That is why he found us in minutes.”

Lila leaned in. “So he has someone feeding him information.”

“He has more than one,” Nate said. “People see money, and they keep their mouths open. But someone is closer than casual talk. Someone knows enough to predict our next step.”

Mia frowned. “You mean someone in this town who knows us well.”

Lila felt her stomach twist. She whispered, “Tessa.”

Mia shook her head. “She is in custody now. Daniel cannot reach her.”

Ethan cleared his throat. “Then who else? You are all looking at me.”

Lila spoke gently, but her voice held firm. “No one said you did it.”

“You did not have to,” he said. “Your face says it.”

She did not deny it. He deserved honesty more than false comfort.

Ethan leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees. “I get why you do not trust me. I messed up more than I can count. But I swear I am not helping him. I am scared of him more than any of you.”

Nate studied him for a long moment. “Fear can make people do strange things.”

Lila stepped back from the group and hugged her arms to her chest. The shed felt too small, too hot. She closed her eyes and tried to slow her breathing, but the image of Daniel’s shadow in the tunnel kept replaying in her mind.

She felt Nate’s presence before he spoke. “Do not shut down on me.”

She opened her eyes and looked up at him. “I am not shutting down. I am thinking about what comes next.”

“You always think about what comes next,” he said softly.

“And you do not?”

He lowered his voice. “I think about what happens if he reaches you again. That is enough for me.”

Her chest tightened. She wanted to reach for him but held back. She knew he cared, she felt it in every choice he made, but fear still wrapped around her like wire. She did not want to lean on someone who might leave again. Not after everything.

Ethan suddenly stood. “I know one way to figure out who has been talking to Daniel. We go to the one place Carla used for all her messages. The old storage unit by the tracks. She kept a box there with notes and numbers.”

Mia looked uncertain. “How do you know that?”

“Because she bragged about it once,” he said. “She thought I was too stupid to understand.”

Lila nodded slowly. “It makes sense. Carla never trusted phones.”

Nate folded the map. “Then we go at dawn. It is too risky now.”

They agreed, but the tension stayed heavy in the air. No one relaxed. No one trusted the quiet.

After a long silence, Lila finally asked, “What if the storage unit shows nothing? What if Daniel is already steps ahead of us?”

Nate looked at her in a way that made the room feel still. “Then we get ahead of him. This ends with us taking back control.”

She wanted to believe him. She tried to believe him.

But deep inside, she felt a warning settle like cold water.

Daniel had chased her through streets and storms, through tunnels and shadows. He had watched her fall apart and then tried to break her again and again. People like him did not stop because their targets hid. They stopped only when they were forced to.

Lila whispered, “He is not done.”

Nate nodded. “Neither are we.”

They all settled in different corners of the shed. Mia curled up in her sleeping bag. Ethan leaned against the wall with his eyes closed. Nate stayed awake, keeping watch with quiet patience.

Lila lay down on the floor and stared at the wooden ceiling above her. She could hear her heartbeat again. Steady and fast. Alive.

She closed her eyes, but sleep did not come. Instead she kept seeing Daniel’s shadow moving across the tunnel wall. And she knew something with an instinct she could not ignore.

He would not wait for dawn. He was already on the move with allies none of them had guessed yet. And he was coming for her again.
