55. Phone Call

55. Phone Call
Cassius POV

I picked up my and looked at the unblock function for my sister’s number. I had to unblock her and call her get all the information I could I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to hear her voice, her nagging her telling me that I was crawling back, but I had told I had to. So I would do this, I took a deep breath, hit the unblock button and then I called.

She didn’t pick up at first and I hoped with all my might that she wouldn’t. I would’ve done what I was told to do and I wouldn’t have to talk to her. I just knew how it was going to go. She would say I abandoned her. On the fourth ring she picked up.

“Well hello there little brother. Long time no talk. I knew what I was supposed to say, but I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to say anything. “Hi Venus.” that’s all I could think of.. “Deciding life with your mate isn’t really that great?”

“ I just wanted to see how the family was doing.” I said, not trying to give away the true meaning of why I had called. “Since when have you ever cared about this family all you do is constantly complain and you can’t even do the tasks that are given to you. Instead you go running off to your puppy dog whims. Tell me what’s the real reason you called? Are you wanting to come home. Did you finally realize being a dog sucks?” The condescension in her voice was obnoxious.

“ I just know we haven’t talked in a while” I was cut off by her shrill voice “and whose fault is that? You’re the one who ran off, trying to live your own life, despite having been given everything.” This was always how she was, and I hated it. “Look, let’s make this conversation quick. Are you ready to leave your bitch and fulfill your obligations or are you just calling to check up because you made it clear throughout the years and several times more recently that we have nothing in common or that we’re friends or that I care about you which is all lies, but I’m not going to waste my time trying to explain that to you so do you wish to continue searching for that bitch wolf or not?”

Did she really think I would just come crawling back to her like this, it had been a year of no contact? She was insane she had to be, there was no other logical reason. “I called to talk about our family, how things are going I still care about you, Venus.” I lied through my teeth and to sell it more I included “and father too. He did raise me after all.” I just hoped she bought it. I needed her to buy the lie. I needed her to believe that I truly did care about her and father and their well-being.

At this point I really knew I didn’t. I used to love them and care about their well-being now I just hated them. I resented the way they had used me growing up, but there was a time where I did rely on them and I did love them quite a lot, but that time was long gone. Being used by them had done that. They acted as if I was their trained dog: doing all their physical dirty work so they don’t have to get their hands. I hated it, and I hated them.

"After you decided to abandon our plan, father took your place instead of resting as he should be and enjoying being older and his later years, he’s running around doing your errands that you threw on him. Honestly it’s disgusting after everything he did for you, the way he loved you, as his own son and took you in. The least you could have done is not abandoned us and force him to do your work. You should’ve been doing. He’s an old man now you know how that is for him. Now he’s out on the road. He’s not having fun. He’s not getting college girls like you were. He isn’t enjoying his time, no he’s a middle-aged man walking around from university after university trying to find the mutt who is the last living relic of a time gone by. You couldn’t do that, no, you found your precious mate and decided that she was worth more than your whole family. Disgusting to think he took you in and defended you when the coven wanted you dead once your mother died.”

She was going to use that the coven hated me and how after my mother died, father had no reason to keep me alive anymore. Yet he did, claiming he saw me as his natural son. How he actually loved me and that I betrayed them like the coven said I would. The conversation was going nowhere. All I knew was that my stepfather was trying to a finish what I didn’t. He would fail miserably. “How do you even know this female alpha is alive?” I asked. She was silent.

“Just tell father to come home, she could be dead for all you know.” I said trying to make her see reason. I should’ve known that was pointless because then Venus spoke again. “She isn’t dead. I saw her cousin it had to be him all the other northern wolves are dead. I accomplish that. When Maven gets back” Now I was the one to cut her off pretend pretending like I didn’t know that Maven was lying dead somewhere in the woods rotting away.

“Wait are you saying your husband’s beta is not there?” She stopped talking immediately, knowing that she gave something away on her little rant. “Look here, are you coming home? Are you going to do what I instructed you to do? Or are you going to keep living this fantasy life with a bitch you call your mate?” she don’t want to give any more information away. She was pissed in a mood, and I could tell.

“No I’m not leaving my mate. I just wanted to reach out. I was just thinking about you and our family and I just wanted to see how you were and if anything has changed or if we could even find some kind of common ground and maybe make a go of being a real family with differences and still coming together for I don’t know the holidays or something.” That was not what I wanted in the slightest, but I needed it to sound sincere. I just hope she bought it. “Don’t call me again unless you want to come back and do as you’re told.” then she hung up.

That call only provided new information on my stepfather and that he wasn’t with the pack. He was out hunting my mate, who he would never find. Venus knew that Maven and his wife, were missing. And that like normal Venus was still extremely pissed and would never forgive me that I chose my mate over her.
