49. Let Her Rot
49. Let Her Rot
Sol Pov
There was no sign of Maven when Cassius and I looked for him. I first tracked his blood trail then his scent, when the blood trail ran cold, I realized something. He had to have been picked up on the main road. When the scent became so faint, I knew had to have gotten into a vehicle Either someone had come for him or a passerby stopped to aid him. I wished I had my mothers super sense of scent. She could keep tracking him, I wasn’t able to when the sky cracked open and it started to rain. I had lost the trail.
Cassius and I doubled back. I would have to send Quienten to retrieve the truck, I didn’t know where he had abandoned it. It was risky leaving it out to long, it could be a marker for where to go to find us. After I got the information from him on what happened he would go get the truck and come straight back to strategize with me. Now I wish he had taken the motorcycle this last run. That would be less obvious than the truck on the side of the road. Though I knew why he had taken it. It was to bring his mates things back with her, should he have found her, which he in fact did.
Cassius led me to the witches body. It was torn up pretty bad, but I could tell she used to be pretty “So do we bury her?” Cassius asked I shot him a look. I thought about what my mother had done to the people who had brutalized our pack during the war. It was the biggest disgrace to let people openly rot outside and not burn their bodies or bury them. “first we check her for anything she has on her body. Then we take it.” He asked again about what to do with her dead body. “We let the bitch rot.” I said coldly.
I didn’t like the idea of taking things from the dead, but if she had any information on her person, we needed to find out what it was. This had nothing to do with disturbing the dead but strategy. With Cassius and Quientin’s mate Belle joining the pack. There were now twenty-seven wolves in Blood Born Pack. I had to protect them so I got down and went through her pockets.
Even with all the adults having been killed in my old pack, it was still rather large if they were going to be coming after us, I wanted to be as ready as I could be. My brain started going through what my mother did to hold off Howi and his army. I had heard all the stories about that war. I turned to Cassius. I wondered if we could even go into some of the tatitcs Howi did to surprise them. Though I wouldn’t go as far as he did and push a pregnant woman out of a plane as he did with my mother.
“Are you in anyway like your father?” He looked confused so I compounded on that question. “I mean to ask can you speak and control natural wolves?” I asked. I knew that would be an advantage they didn’t see coming. The element of the surprise was key. My mother had used that tactic and was able to hold off a whole army with land mines. Of course, having the goddess on her side helped as well. Not to mention the people in my pack could speak in code. We could sign and use a language from the north that no one else knew. We only taught that to pack members. That would be useless now, as our enemy also knew the northern language as well as how to use sign language.
Or had that been taken with the memories of me and Quentin? I didn’t know “I’ve only tried a few times to talk to the natural wolves. I could communicate, but I never commanded them to do anything like my father did.” Quentin finally responded. “Does your sister know you can?” I asked and he shook his head. I smiled, that would be useful. I wondered how he even knew he could, his father died during the war so who told him that Howi could speak to natural wolves? “My mother told me about him and what he could do and what he did. The versions I heard of the war between my father and yours were from my mother, I am sure they are different accounts, but I know of them from her.” Cassius said. I was glad he gave me an explanation without me having to ask how he knew that.
I had found some small glass vials of random different colored liquids, from the witch's body. Then also a phone but nothing else was useful. My anger was boiling up, and I couldn’t help myself when I kicked her dead body one time. “May you never know peace in death and rot out here like the filthy you are.” I said before, turning on my heel and walking back.
I need to bathe before we went to bed. Cassius was cautious, coming back into our room, after we had showered separately, he was still being cautious. “Oh come on Cassius. We made up, get your ass in bed.” I snapped. I didn’t mean to be rude, but I had so much going through my mind. I was on high alert and it was already early tomorrow and I need to hear the story from Quientin and Belle of what had happened. The full story and then we could start to plan and plot and do whatever we needed to. We weren’t going to flee this land. It was good here and we had built something here and I wasn’t going to give it up.
Cassius crawled into bed with me. It been a while since I slept next to him, and it was a comfort that I had missed. His warm body pressed against mine. It brought a calmness I always craved. “The pack is going to have to learn to kill and kill fast and efficiently.” I said to Cassius before I closed my eyes and was tossed into a dream.
