A Good Deal.
A Good Deal.
ELENE
“My love.” Ralph’s voice sounded from behind the curtains, and I froze, my fingers hovering over my gun. “Come here, goddess. Are you the fresh girl my men brought today?”
I parted the curtain slightly and watched the scene unfold. My grip tightened around the gun until the metal bit into my palm.
A red-haired girl stood naked in the middle of the room, covering herself with trembling hands. Her wide eyes darted around the room, refusing to meet Ralph’s gaze. Tears clung to her lashes, but she looked too terrified to let them fall.
“Don’t be like this.” He rose to his feet and stopped in front of her.
He grabbed her by the throat.
Her hands shot up to his arm. Her nails dug into his wrist as her mouth opened in a silent gasp.
Ralph leaned down and inhaled against her neck. “Ah, this is it. The fear everyone should feel around me. Instead of questioning my authority all the time.”
I pulled out my gun, my hand trembling despite the cold expression on my face. The girl’s eyes slowly rolled back as her fingers slipped weakly from his arm and fell to her sides.
Ralph kissed her ear as he watched the life fade from her eyes.
He should not have been doing this.
Ever since we escaped the warehouse, his behavior had completely changed. Ralph smiled while the girl choked in his grip, and for a moment, I could not recognize the man standing in front of me. Suddenly, I remembered Liora.
“Don’t die yet.” He threw her onto the floor.
She gasped violently, her body arching as coughs tore from her throat.
Ralph grabbed her hair and dragged her across the floor.
“N-no! Please let me go!” She clawed at the floor as he dragged her away.
He dragged her into his room and kicked the door shut hard enough to shake the walls.
I did not move because, from the other side of the room, I could see his men watching from the shadows.
I kept my hand near my gun. Love meant nothing to Ralph once his temper snapped.
“Ahhhh! Please stop! I’m begging you!”
Her screams burst through the door.
A sharp slap followed, then a loud thud.
“Shut the fuck up, you bitch!” Ralph yelled.
More heavy thuds echoed from inside the room. Her screams suddenly stopped, leaving only the sickening sounds of violence behind the door.
I shut my eyes and lowered my gun before turning away and climbing the stairs leading to the surface.
I pushed open the metal hatch above me and climbed out.
A huge airplane roared through the air overhead while the distant chatter of men filled the abandoned airport.
The scorching wind slammed against my face, blowing sand into my mouth. I spat onto the ground, and the saliva dried almost instantly beneath the burning heat.
Heat waves rippled across the cracked runway while sweat gathered beneath my jacket. Rusted equipment and broken cargo containers littered the far end of the airport.
“Elene!”
I turned toward the voice and saw a middle-aged man waving at me.
I exhaled sharply and walked toward him anyway, passing the military trucks Ralph and his men had stolen.
“Who would have guessed I’d see your beautiful face first thing this afternoon?” the man said with a chuckle as he tossed pieces of iron onto the table.
“I don’t have time for meaningless chatter, Dav. Why did you call me?” I asked, resting a hand on my waist.
He laughed, his thick accent curling around his words. “I wanted to humor you a little. I thought by now you’d be crying because you lost the boss’s favor.”
My jaw tightened. “Watch what you say.”
“Or what?” He laughed harder. “You know your title here means nothing. He only keeps you as second-in-command so he can fuck you without any prob...”
“I said watch it!”
I pulled out my gun and fired.
The bullet tore through his right arm.
The loud bang echoed through the area, silencing the men around us. A few heads immediately turned in our direction.
“Fuck!” Dav groaned as he crashed to his knees.
I grabbed his hair tightly as the image of the red-haired girl flashed through my mind.
Then I slapped him.
Again.
Again.
And again.
I snatched the gun from the table and shoved it into his mouth, forcing it deep against his throat.
His breathing turned ragged. Both hands shot into the air so fast the chair behind him nearly tipped over.
“You want to find out whether this title is just for fucking, or for putting filthy bastards like you in the ground?” I yelled, my finger tightening on the trigger. “I won’t hesitate to blow your brain out and feed your corpse to the butchers!”
“Mmm! Mmmmm!” he cried desperately around the gun.
“Enough, Elene.”
Ralph’s voice sounded behind me.
My finger twitched against the trigger.
“Drop the gun,” he ordered.
I yanked the gun from Dav’s mouth and wiped the saliva off the gun against his head.
Then I turned and saw Ralph standing there with an unpleasant expression on his face.
My eyes dropped to his groin, and I noticed his zipper was undone.
I looked away before the disgust on my face became too obvious.
“Where are you going?” he shouted behind me. “Elene!”
“I’m going to clear my head! Just leave me alone!” I yelled back.
I climbed onto a bike, turned the key, put on my helmet, and sped away, leaving clouds of dust behind me.
The road stretched through thick trees that surrounded the abandoned airport. Dry leaves scattered beneath the bike tires as I sped through the narrow path.
No one would have guessed in a million years that Ralph is hiding here.
“That’s why I’m going to tell them myself,” I muttered as I pressed harder on the gas.
An hour later, I stopped in front of Ralph’s brother’s sex club.
Red lights flickered above the entrance while loud music vibrated through the walls.
I got off the bike and walked toward the entrance, but before I could step inside, two bouncers blocked my path.
“Stop. What business do you have here?” the one on the left asked.
I smirked.
“I’m here to offer your boss a very good deal.”
