Chapter 53

Chapter 53

Although my voice was soft, I spoke with determination.

Andrew didn't say much more and told me to rest well.

I had a good sleep, then went out to find food. At the door, I ran into James.

James seemed to be on the phone with Amelia. He looked annoyed but was still patiently talking to her.

"I know about Isabella's situation. I'll find a specialist to take another look. If there's nothing else, let's leave it at that." His eyes glanced toward me.

I started walking.

He caught up with me. "Why didn't you wait for me?"

I looked at him strangely. "Why would I wait for you?"

"Can't you tell? I was specifically waiting at your door for you."

Of course I knew that, but so what?

It was not like I asked him to wait.

I said coolly, "So what?"

I didn't believe James came to wait at my door for no reason. He must have wanted something from me.

James didn't answer, but asked me instead, "I sent you messages. Why didn't you reply?"

I pulled out my phone and only then saw that James had sent me several messages, asking what I was doing and if I wanted to go out to eat together.

I put away my phone and refused him very bluntly. "I don't want to eat with you. I'm afraid I won't have an appetite."

"Then what are you doing now?" He asked.

I stopped walking, irritation showing between my brows. "If you're really that free, spend more time with Grandma, or go keep Amelia and Isabella company."

Just didn't come bothering me.

I never realized before that James was such a pain.

James looked confused. "Don't you want me to spend more time with you?"

I quickly replied, "I don't need you around."

When I needed him, I couldn't even see his shadow.

Now that I didn't need him, he showed up in front of me every day, provoking me and making me uncomfortable.

I thought James was specifically sent to torment me, to make sure I didn't have peace.

Even after I said all that, James still followed me.

I flagged down a taxi right on the street and got in, immediately telling the driver to go.

James's hand reached out to open the car door, but I made a face at him.

After eating, I headed back and got a call from Amelia. "Sophia, can you come to the hospital? I have something to tell you."

I frowned slightly. "What is it that can't be said over the phone? Why do I have to make a trip to the hospital?"

Amelia didn't say clearly, just kept insisting, "It's something very important, related to you."

About me?

I had to admit, Amelia really got my curiosity going.

But at the same time, I suspected this was a trap. Amelia must be planning something again, using this excuse to trick me into coming.

Whatever she wanted to do, I wasn't afraid. Maybe I could even teach her a lesson.

Thinking this, I agreed to meet her at the hospital.

Amelia led me to the emergency stairwell.

I laughed to myself.

Coming to a place like this, anyone could figure out that Amelia was up to something shady.

I knew it clearly in my heart, but didn't show it on my face, pretending not to know. "Why did you bring me here?"

"Sophia, why can't you just stay away from us?" Amelia glared at me with resentful eyes, staring hard.

"You keep saying you want to divorce James, but there's been no action. You're stringing James along while going after other men. You're really disgusting."

I picked at my ear. "Are you done?"

Amelia looked stunned. "You're not angry? I was just insulting you."

I shrugged. "Do I really need to argue with trash?"

"Don't think I can't tell you're calling me trash in a roundabout way." Amelia's face turned red and pale with anger.

"Wasn't I being obvious enough?" I propped my chin, saying with mock regret, "Looks like I can be even more direct next time."

"Sophia! You bitch!" Amelia was furious and raised her hand to hit me.

I wasn't going to stand there and let her hit me. I blocked her hand and slapped her back.

Amelia screamed out of control, wildly swinging her hands to scratch me. I found the right moment and slapped her other cheek.

Amelia grabbed my hand directly, smiling strangely. "Sophia, you're finished."

As her body tilted backward, I grabbed her, but Amelia clawed at my hand.

I held onto her tightly. We pushed and shoved each other, and somehow, the ground gave way under my feet and I fell straight down the stairs.

James, who had been pulled over by Isabella, quickly rushed down the stairs and helped me sit up. "Sophia, I'll take you to see a doctor right away."

"Don't move me yet. I don't know where I'm hurt. Get a doctor to come check." I was afraid that moving carelessly might cause problems.

I still valued my life.

James ran to find a doctor.

Amelia didn't even get a chance to talk to him.

She stood on the steps, looking down at me on the landing. I raised my eyebrows slightly. "Looks like your scheme failed again."

Amelia's hands hanging at her sides clenched tightly. "Sophia, you really are a jinx!"

"Why didn't you just fall to your death? You should go to hell with that short-lived child of yours!"

She conld say what she wanted about me, but talking about my child - I absolutely wouldn't allow it.

Amelia insisted on walking into my line of fire, so she couldn't blame me.

When James came over, I threw my arms around him, buried my head in his neck, and cried silently.

Tears ran down his neck into his clothes. James's body tensed. "Sophia, are you crying?"

My voice was hoarse. "Amelia went too far. It's one thing to talk about me, but why curse our poor child to hell?"

"He never got to come into this world - he's already pitiful enough. Even in death he can't rest in peace, and still has to be cursed."

"He didn't do anything wrong. Why say such things about him?"

James's face darkened. "Amelia, how did you become like this?"

"That child had no grudge against you. Why would you say such cruel things?"

Amelia shook her head. "James, I didn't. How could I say such things? Don't listen to Sophia's nonsense."

"Sophia fell down the stairs and must have hurt her head. Her mind isn't clear."

I wouldn't let her off. "You still won't admit it? I recorded it. Do you want me to play that recording?"

As soon as I mentioned the recording, Amelia deflated instantly.

She bit her lower lip hard.

"Apologize." James's cold, sharp gaze fell on Amelia.

Amelia didn't want to and started crying with her head down. "I didn't, I really didn't..."

James's tone grew colder. "I'll say it one more time. Apologize."

Amelia shuddered in fear and apologized through her tears.
