A Truce in the Ruins
A Truce in the Ruins
The ICU ward had fallen into a rare hush when Eva finally opened her eyes. Her first word had been Skylar’s name.
Before anyone could react, Eva sat up halfway, her IV line tugging taut, and whispered again, "sister-in-law..."
William moved to steady her, but she pushed his hand away and looked straight at Skylar, who stood frozen near the doorway.
"Come here," Eva said hoarsely, stretching out her trembling hand.
Skylar walked over, unsure, her heart tight in her chest. Eva’s fingers clutched hers like lifelines, and then, without warning, she pulled Skylar into a weak but desperate hug.
The silence in the room turned sharp.
Olivia rose instantly. "What is this nonsense?! Eva, you’re not in your senses. Let go of her!"
"I want to speak to her. Alone," Eva said, still holding on.
Mathew stepped forward, angry. "What for? What is left to say?"
But Eva didn’t back down. "Dad, please. Just a few minutes."
Olivia opened her mouth again, but William stepped in, his voice calm but commanding. "If Eva wants to talk to Skylar alone, then let her."
Olivia scoffed, frustration bubbling over as she turned and marched off. Mathew followed, muttering under his breath.
William looked at Skylar, gently placing a hand on her shoulder. “You okay?”
Skylar gave a small nod. “I’m fine.”
He exhaled softly, gave her a quiet look of encouragement, then stepped out, sliding the glass door shut behind him.
Eva’s room felt too quiet now. Skylar stood by the bed, still holding Eva’s hand.
"I saw everything," Eva began, her voice raw tears rolling down her cheeks. "The video. The betrayal. The look on Zack's face. It crushed me. But... it also woke me up."
Skylar’s eyes welled up. "I never wanted you to find out that way. I kept it hidden for weeks. I just... Evelyn accused me publicly, and it pushed me over the edge."
Eva gave a faint, bitter smile. "You know what hurts the most? It’s not that he cheated. It’s that I ignored all the signs. Everyone around me was tiptoeing—protecting me. Except you."
"I didn’t want to hurt you," Skylar whispered.
"But truth hurts less than lies," Eva murmured. "Thank you... for not lying."
"This is the least i can do for you as a woman." Skylar blinked tenderly.
Eva felt guilty in her heart. Her voice trembled as she spoke, barely above a whisper. “I’m sorry… for everything.”
Skylar glanced at Eva, surprise flickering in her eyes, but said nothing. She waited, letting her speak.
“I misjudged you,” Eva said, voice trembling. “I hated you… without reason. All I saw was that you weren’t our choice. That you came into William’s life and just… stayed. I thought you were trying to replace me.”
A dry, bitter laugh escaped her lips. “But tonight, lying on that hospital bed, thinking I might not wake up… all I could think of was you. The one who showed me the truth—not to hurt me, but to protect me.”
Skylar’s gaze dropped, fingers curling into her lap.
“I should’ve seen you for what you are,” Eva whispered. “Someone who’s walked through fire and still stands tall. I mean… how do you do it? Your father, your family, William—everything fell apart. And yet you’re still here.”
Her voice cracked. “I faced one betrayal and wanted to give up. But you…”
Skylar reached out, gently taking her hand.
“You’re allowed to break, Eva,” she said softly. “But never let anyone else decide when you rise.”
She glanced out the window, her voice calm but edged with steel. “I didn’t survive because I’m stronger. I survived because I refused to give my power away—not to William, Evelyn, or anyone else.”
Looking back at her, Skylar added, “People will hurt you. That’s not in your control. But what you do with that pain—that is. Don’t give Zack or society the power to define your worth.”
Eva sobbed, but this time, it was release—not despair.
Skylar embraced her gently, her voice a whisper. “You’ll rise again. But promise me—never let anyone shake your spirit.”
Eva nodded through tears. “I promise.”
And they sat like that—one bruised, the other scarred—bonded not by blood, but by battle.
Outside the room, Olivia paced like a caged lioness. "How could she twist Eva against us? That girl—"
"Enough, Mom," William snapped, walking over. "You’re blaming the wrong person. Eva saw the truth. Let her deal with it her way."
Olivia scoffed. "You’ve been hypnotized by that girl. She’s tearing this family apart."
William’s eyes flashed. "No, Mom. This family is tearing itself apart by refusing to see the truth."
Olivia turned away in fury, Mathew silent for once.
Moments later, the room door opened. Skylar stepped out quietly, wiping her damp cheeks, only to be met by Olivia’s furious glare.
“You think we don’t see through you?” Olivia spat, stepping forward like a woman scorned. “What poison did you feed my daughter this time, huh? What cheap speech turned her against her own blood?”
Mathew folded his arms, looking her up and down with disgust. “You should be ashamed—lurking around like a vulture, clinging onto scraps of sympathy. You’ve always been hopeless.”
Skylar stiffened but said nothing. Her silence was fuel to their fire.
William was there in seconds, voice slicing through the corridor like a whip. “Enough.”
His tone was low, deadly calm—the kind that made people stop breathing.
Olivia blinked, taken aback. “You’re seriously defending her? After everything she’s done?”
“No, Mom. I’m defending Eva. And if you actually cared about her, you’d stop this circus right here.”
Mathew scoffed, but William didn’t flinch.
“I’m telling you both—go home. Be with grandma. Eva doesn’t need this noise right now.”
“You want us to leave our daughter alone in this state?” Olivia’s voice cracked, scandalized.
“She’s not alone,” William said, stepping beside Skylar. “I’m here. We are here.”
Olivia’s face twisted. “I don’t want that girl anywhere near my daughter!”
Mathew added coldly, “We don’t trust her. She’s not family.”
William’s expression darkened. His eyes, usually warm for his parents, turned to stone. “She’s more family than the two of you right now.”
They stared at him, stunned.
He didn’t stop.
“There’s no one who understands Eva’s pain better than Skylar,” William said, voice low and ice-cold. "She knows the pain betrayal—what it’s like to be broken and still keep breathing. Eva needs that. She needs understanding, not melodrama.”
Olivia stepped back slightly, startled. Mathew went still. This wasn’t the William they knew. His warmth was gone—replaced by a chilling calm and a stare sharp enough to cut glass.
“So I’m asking—politely—go home. Let Eva rest. Or I swear, I’ll call security and have you both escorted out.”
Silence fell like a dropped curtain. Olivia’s mouth moved, but no words came. Mathew gave her a look, and together, bristling and bitter, they turned and walked away, grumbling as they disappeared down the hallway.
William ran a hand through his hair and turned to Skylar, his face now soft but weary. “I’m sorry. They’re impossible.”
Skylar shook her head gently. “You don’t need to say sorry. I know exactly the kind of people they are.”
He stepped closer, placing both hands on her shoulders. “Still… thank you. For everything. I don’t say it enough, but I’m damn lucky you’re here.”
Her lips curved faintly. “Remind me of that next time you’re being an ass.”
They shared a brief, warm silence. But Skylar’s mind stirred with urgency—the pocket watch. She opened her mouth to speak, but William’s phone buzzed sharply.
He glanced at the screen, grimaced. “Work emergency. Dammit.”
He looked at her, guilt flickering in his eyes. “Can you stay with Eva? Just for a bit?”
She nodded at once. “Of course. She’s my family too, remember?”
William smiled, touched her cheek gently, and whispered, “I’ll be back soon.” Then he strode off, already dialing.
Skylar entered Eva’s room again, finding her sitting up, a little pale but composed.
“Lie back for a while,” Skylar said, tucking a comforter around her. “I’ll bring you something light to eat. No hospital junk—I promise.”
Eva nodded, visibly comforted, and Skylar left.
Thirty minutes later, she returned with a take-away in hand.
As she approached the room, a loud thud stopped her cold. Then—
“GET OUT!” Eva screamed, her voice raw with rage.
Skylar rushed in—and froze.
The fruit basket she had picked out was now clutched in Eva’s hands like a grenade. Zack was on his knees near the bed, hands up in a pleading gesture. On the floor lay a shattered water jug and a knocked-over some fruits.
