Chapter 241
After dinner, Vincent offered to drive Gloria home.
"So, where are you living these days?" Vincent asked as they got into the car.
Gloria suddenly remembered that Vincent had never been to her current place. She gave him the address of her apartment.
Vincent glanced at her, raising an eyebrow.
"What's up?" Gloria asked, puzzled.
"That place is downtown," Vincent replied, implying the rent must be pretty steep. He didn't know much about Gloria's current situation, but when they first met at the hospital, she seemed pretty stressed and definitely didn't look like someone who could afford such a place.
Gloria caught his drift and felt a bit guilty. "I used to work at the Miller Group and got an advance on my salary," she said, avoiding any mention of her relationship with Gavin. Vincent already disliked her involvement with Sebastian. If he found out she was also tangled up with Gavin, he might drag her back.
Since she didn't elaborate, Vincent didn't press further. "Was it your senior?" he asked, recalling that Gloria's senior was the design director at the Miller Group.
Gloria breathed a sigh of relief and nodded. Vincent started the car and asked seriously, "Why did you say 'used to'?"
If he remembered correctly, Gloria had been working at the Miller Group before her identity was revealed. She was there when she injured her ankle, which wasn't that long ago. It didn't make sense for her to leave the Miller Group so quickly.
Gloria looked out the window at the passing scenery and calmly said, "I'm planning to officially resign when I get back."
"Why? Because of the news from a few days ago?" Vincent's voice was heavy, clearly disapproving of her decision.
Gloria tightened her fingers, a trace of helplessness crossing her face. "With everything that's happened, if I stay at the Miller Group, it will only damage their reputation." Gavin and Emily had already helped her a lot, and she didn't want to drag them down.
Vincent knew this would be her reason and frowned even more. "Whether it was three years ago or now, you are the victim."
When the incident from three years ago came out, Vincent never believed Gloria would do such a thing. He felt the same now.
A warm feeling surged in Gloria's heart, and she smiled. "Thank you for believing in me. But the incident from three years ago is already settled. Right now, I'm indeed surrounded by trouble, and there's no need to affect others."
Vincent knew she had her own ideas and couldn't persuade her otherwise. He also didn't know about Gloria's relationship with Gavin. In his mind, with everything that had happened, even if Gloria wanted to continue working, the Miller Group would consider their reputation. It was better for her to resign voluntarily than to be kicked out.
"What are your plans after you resign?" Vincent asked.
Gloria frowned in frustration. "I haven't decided yet, but for now, I'm planning to move out of my current place and stay with Lila." The current apartment was Gavin's, and if she left the Miller Group, she couldn't continue living there.
The car stopped in front of the apartment. Vincent said, "Call me when you're moving. I'll help. You can also contact me anytime if you need anything. If I don't answer, it means I'm in surgery, but I'll call you back as soon as I can."
A few days ago, Gloria had asked Vincent to bring something after work, and they had exchanged contact information.
Gloria agreed obediently, said goodbye to Vincent, and got out of the car. The temperature had dropped, and as soon as Gloria opened the car door, she shivered from the cold.
Vincent reached out from behind and draped a suit jacket over her shoulders. "You just recovered from pneumonia. Dress warmly and don't catch a cold again."
Gloria turned back and smiled at him, tightening the jacket around her. "It's getting late, so I won't keep you. Take care on your way home."
Vincent nodded slightly, watching her enter the apartment before driving away.
Upstairs, Gloria opened the door and saw the lights on inside, making her stop cautiously.
"Why aren't you coming in?" Gavin's voice came from inside.
Gloria was stunned for a moment before stepping inside. She saw Gavin lazily lying on the couch, facing the door. As soon as she entered, their eyes met. She couldn't tell if it was her imagination, but Gavin's gaze seemed different, almost strange.
"What are you doing here?" Gloria suppressed the odd feeling and changed her shoes.
Gavin's head followed her movements as he spoke in a resentful tone. "What else could I do? Ms. Russell, you suddenly disappeared without a word. I was worried about my employee, so I had no choice but to come here every day. If I didn't come, I wouldn't even know when you got back."
Gavin had tried to contact her over the past few days to find out where she was, but Gloria, too exhausted to deal with him, had blocked him out. She hadn't expected Gavin to be so persistent, coming to the apartment every day.
Gloria glanced around and saw signs of recent activity. There was a crushed beer can on the table, though she couldn't tell when it had been drunk. She turned her gaze back and went to the kitchen to pour two glasses of water. "Sorry, you probably know what happened to me. It wasn't convenient to contact you."
Gavin sat up, took the hot water, and stared at her. He scrutinized her, noting that she didn't look any different from when they last saw each other. In fact, Gloria's complexion seemed even better, not like someone who had been in the hospital. Gavin's thoughts wandered, and his expression darkened.
Gloria felt uncomfortable under his gaze. "Is there something on my face?"
Gavin snapped out of his thoughts, frowning as he collected himself. "It wasn't convenient to contact me a few days ago, but now that you're back, it's still not convenient?"
Gloria hadn't expected him to hold a grudge over this. "I..."
She wanted to say she didn't see the need to contact Gavin specifically, but that would be hurtful. After all, regardless of his motives, Gavin had helped her a lot. She changed her approach. "I was planning to settle in first and then tell you."
Gavin gave her a knowing look. "You weren't planning to contact me at all, were you?"
Gloria opened her mouth but couldn't find a rebuttal. Gavin had just been speaking offhandedly, but seeing her guilty expression, he couldn't help but feel a bit upset. He glanced at her, then at the suit jacket she had hung on the coat rack by the door.
Gavin spoke with a hint of jealousy. "It's understandable you forgot about me. After all, you have Judge Windsor to deal with and a knight in shining armor taking care of you, not even letting the wind touch you. What am I, just your boss?"
