New Alliances

New Alliances
Ember's POV

I threw myself between Elara and the huge metal hand bursting from the ground.
"Stay back!" I screamed, my witch fire burning around my burned fingers as I poured everything I had into a protection spell. The machine giant's fingers were each the size of tree trunks, reaching for my best friend like she was nothing more than a toy to be grabbed.
My fire met old metal and exploded in a shower of sparks. The mechanical hand stopped for just a second, giving me enough time to grab Elara and pull her away from the emerging horror.
"What is that thing?" Alaric shouted over the rumbling sound of more metal breaking through the ground.
But I knew exactly what it was. And that knowledge made my stomach sick with fear.
"It's a Forge Titan," I gasped, my voice barely audible over the mechanical screaming. "My father told me stories about them when I was little. Ancient war machines from the first age, buried deep and waiting to be awakened."
More metal hands pushed through the dirt, followed by massive arms and shoulders. This wasn't just one giant. There were dozens of them, all waking up at the same time because Elara's corrupted power had touched Vulcan's hidden devices.
"How do we stop them?" Seraphina asked, her own Luna Priestess power flashing weakly around her.
That's when I made the hardest choice of my life.
"We can't," I said, turning to face the group. "But I know someone who might be able to help us."
Everyone looked at me like I'd lost my mind.
"My father didn't just work with the Void," I continued, my words falling out fast as the mechanical giants kept rising from the earth. "He's been privately allied with Vulcan for decades. I know where the Forge Lord's hidden base is. I know his goals. I know his weaknesses."
"Why should we trust you?" Marcus snarled from where he lay bleeding. "You're his kid! This could all be a trap!"
"Because," I said, my voice breaking with emotion, "I'm done being his daughter."
I pulled up my sleeve and showed them the dark mark on my arm. The one that proved I belonged to the Shadow Coven. The mark my father had burned into my skin when I was just seven years old.
Without delay, I pressed my other hand against it and spoke words in the old language that I'd hoped I'd never have to use. " I, Ember Blackthorn, reject my blood ties to Marcus the Shadow King. I cast off his name, his power, and his cause. From this moment forward, I serve only the light."
The dark mark on my arm burst into flames. I screamed as it burned away, taking a piece of my soul with it. But when the fire died down, the mark was gone forever.
"Now you know I'm serious," I said, showing them the clean skin where the mark used to be. "I was raised to help destroy the world. Instead, I want to help save it."
Elara, despite the red light still spilling from her corrupted power, reached out and took my burned hand.
"I trust you," she said simply. "You're my friend. That's all I need to know."
Her acceptance made tears spring to my eyes. After everything I'd done, everything my family had put her through, she still believed in me.
"The Forge Lord's main base is called the Deep Forge," I said quickly, as more Titans continued to emerge around us. "It's hidden inside Mount Ironspine, about fifty miles north of here. But getting there won't be easy."
"What do you mean?" Alaric asked, his silver eyes scanning the mechanical giants that were now fully standing, each one over a hundred feet tall.
"Vulcan didn't just retreat," I explained, my witch senses picking up magical signatures all around us. "He's been planning this for months. The Ember Seeds he placed weren't just meant to explode. They were meant to wake up his sleeping army and guide them to one specific target."
I pointed at Elara, whose red-corrupted power was still spreading through the trees.
"Her. The Crimson Spawn inside her is like a light. Every mechanical creature Vulcan ever built will be drawn to her now, trying to catch her for his experiments."
As if to prove my point, smaller mechanical creatures started crawling out of the ground. Metal spiders the size of dogs. Flying drones with spinning blades. Walking guns that moved on spider-like legs.
All of them had glowing red scanners focused on Elara.
"We need to move," I said quickly. "Now, before—" I was cut off by a sound that made everyone freeze.
Slow, heavy footsteps. Coming from the direction of the main road.
Through the twisted trees, we could see a person walking toward us. Human-shaped but wrong somehow. Too big. Too thin. Moving with a jerky, strange gait.
"Who is that?" Ember whispered.
The figure stepped into a patch of moonlight, and we all gasped.
It was Aurora.
But not the Aurora who had died in my arms. This one was different. Her skin was pale gray, like old metal. Her eyes glowed with the same red light as Vulcan's tools. And when she smiled, her teeth were sharp and shining like knife blades.
"Hello, sister," she said to Elara in a sound like grinding gears. "Did you miss me?"
"That's impossible," Seraphina breathed. "I watched her die. I saw her turn to dust."
Aurora laughed, and the sound made all the mechanical animals around us go still.
"Death is just another kind of transformation," she said, raising her hand to show us fingers that were now made of living metal. "And I've been transformed into something so much better than human."
She pointed to the Forge Titans surrounding us.
"My new father Vulcan gave me a choice. Stay dead, or become the perfect blend of divine power and mechanical precision. Guess which one I picked?"
That's when I understood the horrible truth.
"Vulcan didn't retreat," I whispered. "He never planned to. This was always his real goal. Not to take Elara, but to get Aurora's body and turn her into his perfect weapon."
Aurora nodded, her mechanical smile getting wider.
"Very good, little witch. Yes, while you were all focused on the Crimson Devourers and the Void, good old Vulcan was collecting my remains. Rebuilding me. Improving me."
She took a step closer, and I could see that her entire body was now a blend of flesh and metal. Divine power and mechanical improvement working together in ways that shouldn't be possible.
"And now," she continued, "I'm here to claim what belongs to me. My sister's power, my mother's blood, and anyone else who gets in my way."
The Forge Titans began moving toward us, their huge footsteps shaking the ground.
But that wasn't the worst part.
The worst part was when Aurora opened her mouth and spoke in Vulcan's voice.
"Did you really think I would trust such an important mission to a newly created hybrid?" the Forge Lord's words came out of Aurora's mouth. "I'm controlling her straight from the Deep Forge. She's my eyes, my hands, and my tool all in one."
Aurora's red eyes focused on me with clockwork precision.
"Hello, daughter of Marcus," Vulcan said through her mouth. "Thank you for abandoning your father. It makes what I'm about to do so much easier."
Before I could ask what he meant, Aurora raised her hand and fired a beam of pure energy straight at my chest.
But instead of killing me, the beam wrapped around me like glowing chains.
"You see," Vulcan continued as I struggled against the energy bonds, "I need someone who knows both shadow magic and light magic to finish my ultimate plan. And thanks to your little renunciation service, you're no longer protected by your father's power."
The energy chains began pulling me toward Aurora, and I realized with rising horror that I wasn't just going to be captured.
I was going to be turned into the same kind of flesh-and-metal monster that Aurora had become.
"Welcome to the Forge, little witch," Vulcan said through Aurora's smile. "You're going to help me build something that will make the Crimson Devourers look like harmless pets."
