The Compromise
The Compromise
Moon Goddess POV
Silver light erupted from Elara's mouth as I took control of her voice.
"ENOUGH!" The word thundered across the battlefield, bringing power that made every creature freeze where they stood.
Through my chosen vessel's eyes, I looked upon the chaos that had unfolded. The blood-red light flowing through reality's cracks. The fear on Marcus Blackthorn's face. The growing roar of something old and furious pushing its way into this dimension.
The humans had no idea what was coming.
"Listen well," I spoke through Elara's mouth, my divine voice making her throat glow with inner fire. "What approaches makes the Void look like a gentle breeze."
Alaric stepped forward, his silver eyes blazing with protective rage. "Get out of her! She chose to stay human!"
How adorable. The king thought he could order a goddess.
"Your mate's choice has been noted," I said, allowing amusement to color my words. "But actions have consequences. And sometimes, mortal love is not enough to save the worlds you treasure."
I turned Elara's head toward the blood-red cracks, where the roaring was getting louder.
"Behold, the Crimson Devourers. They are what destroyed the Void's original realm. What forced these shadow creatures to flee into yours."
Marcus fell to his knees, his dark strength flickering like a dying candle. "That's impossible. Nothing can destroy the Void."
"Nothing mortal," I amended. "But the Devourers are older than mortal knowledge. They consume entire realities, leaving nothing but empty space where worlds once blossomed."
Through Elara's enhanced abilities, I felt the fear rippling through every person present. Good. They needed to understand the magnitude of what they faced.
"The Void's invasion was never about conquest," I continued, my voice growing heavier with ancient sadness. "It was about running. And now that the doorway is open, the Devourers have found a new world to consume."
Ember stepped forward, her witch power crackling weakly around her burned hands. "How do we stop them?"
I almost smiled at her brave question. Almost.
"You cannot," I said simply. "Mortals lack the power to stand against beings who devour gods for breakfast."
That's when Elara's human awareness pushed back against my control.
"Then help us!" she yelled from within her own mind. "You're supposed to protect our world!"
Her attitude was... refreshing. Most mortals simply accepted heavenly will without question.
"I am bound by ancient laws," I explained, both to her and to the others listening. "I cannot directly interfere in mortal affairs unless certain conditions are met."
I paused, feeling the blood-red light getting stronger.
"However, there is a way. A deal, if you will."
Through Elara's eyes, I looked straight at Alaric. The pain in his face when he realized what I was about to propose made something in my endless heart ache.
"I offer your mate a choice," I said gravely. "She can stay fully human, keeping all her memories and emotions intact. But when the Devourers arrive, she will be too weak to make a difference. Billions will die while she watches, powerless."
"No," Alaric growled, moving closer. "There has to be another way."
"Or," I continued, ignoring his protest, "she can accept full godhood. Become my equal in power, capable of standing against the Crimson Devourers. But the transformation will burn away her humanity totally. The girl you love will cease to exist."
The quiet that followed was deafening.
From within her own mind, I felt Elara's pain. She was trying to find a third choice that didn't exist.
"Please," she whispered inwardly. "There has to be something else."
And perhaps... there was.
"Actually," I said slowly, an idea forming in my cosmic consciousness, "there is a third way. Dangerous and untested, but possible."
Everyone held their breath.
"You could accept partial change. Enhanced skills, extended lifespan, power enough to wound the Devourers but not destroy them fully. You would stay human in heart and mind, but..."
I paused, knowing this next part would break their dreams.
"The power would slowly burn through your mortal body. You would have perhaps a year before it consumed you totally."
"A year to save everyone and then die?" Elara's thought voice was barely a whisper.
"A year to buy time for others to find a permanent solution," I corrected. "Your sacrifice would give the remaining gods a chance to unite, to pool our power and find a way to seal the Devourers away forever."
Through Elara's eyes, I watched Alaric's face crumble.
"There has to be another way," he said desperately. "I won't lose her. Not like this."
But Elara had already made her choice.
"I'll do it," she said out loud, her own voice mixed with mine. "I'll take the enhanced abilities."
"No!" Alaric grabbed her hands, silver tears running down his face. "We'll find another solution!"
"Will we?" she asked softly. "How many people will die while we're looking?"
Before anyone could argue further, the blood-red light suddenly blazed brighter.
The roaring stopped.
And through the cracks in reality, a voice spoke that made even my heavenly essence shudder with fear.
"FOUND YOU."
The temperature dropped so fast that everyone's breath turned to fog. But it wasn't cold that made them shiver.
It was the presence of something that had devoured entire worlds.
"They're early," I whispered, real alarm creeping into my voice. "They weren't supposed to break through for another day."
A massive red eye appeared in the largest crack, looking down at us with hunger that spanned eons.
"The Luna Priestess power," the Devourer spoke directly into our minds. "We smell it. So clean. So delicious."
That's when I realized the horrible truth.
"They're not here for your world," I said, my voice filled with growing dread. "They're here for Elara. Her power is like a light calling to them across dimensions."
The eye in the crack focused on Elara with predatory intent.
"Give us the girl, and we might let your reality exist a little longer."
But before anyone could react, something even more terrifying happened.
The mark on Elara's forehead - the one that showed she was picked by me - began to change.
Instead of silver, it was turning blood red.
"No," I breathed, understanding rushing through me. "This was planned. The Void, the attack, all of it. Someone wanted to mark her for the Devourers."
Elara touched her face, and her fingers came away stained with red light.
"What's happening to me?" she whispered.
That's when Marcus started laughing. Not the broken laughter of a beaten man, but the triumphant cackle of someone whose real plan was finally revealed.
"Did you really think I was working for the Void?" he asked, his eyes now glowing the same blood red as the cracks. "I've been serving the Devourers all along. And this girl... she's not your chosen Luna Priestess."
He pointed at Elara with a finger that was changing into something like a claw.
"She's their promised meal."
